Beautiful palace with many nice rooms. The exhibitions are excellent, Rembrandt, Rubens etc. - you will need time to explore the whole museum and be prepared to see many people so I recommend to get there early. Definitely a must for you visit!

I have no words to describe the place.
This museum is really a treasury, the building itself is very beautiful and magnificent.
We used Audioguide which is available to rent at the gate but unfortunately the 2nd and 3rd floors didn't have Audio guide support.
The staff of the museum does not know any English, I lost my way and none of them could help me,
this was strange for a well-known museum that has visitors from all over the world.

This was my second visit to this incredible museum, the first during the USSR regime. The museum is in better shape now although you could see it much better before, now the crowds are so huge that it is not worth the time unless you pay extra for a private visit before the museum opens to the public. I can not recommend any other way to visit it. We were a group of four with a guide and we could walk through the place at our own speed without worrying about crowds, there were justa few of us. When we were going out, we collided with hundreds of people getting in and we hd trouble exiting the place. Since the place is huge a mere 2 hour visit only gives you an idea of the place, go several times if you can... I highly advise to visit it in the cold months of winter or if you go during the summer to get a private visit.

As everyone else has said, the exhibits at the Hermitage are truly mind blowing and world class. We planned our visit with our excellent guide Nina (from Tzarina Tours, who organised the tickets so we basically just went straight in) for Wednesday afternoon so we could see the Peacock Clock. I wanted to do a review just for the peacock clock but it doesn’t appear to be separated out on TA. Would have only given it 2 stars. After several hours with Nina covering the main exhibits, we went back at about 6.15pm to try to secure a good spot to see the peacock clock, considering that it was peak season in mid-June. There was already a small crowd but we were able to secure a fairly close spot and then as time went on others got fed up and left and so we actually ended up in a prime spot right in front of the clock. I had thought the clock was at 7.30pm but it turned out that it was not until 8pm, so it was a long wait for a large crowd. But then when the time finally came and the man entered the enclosure to wind the clock and start the performance (which lasts about one minute), he crouched down to wind the clock but then stood up about ten seconds into the show, almost obliterating the view for anyone directly in front and ruining any photo opportunities. Those on the side would have had a better view though. Don’t know whether we just got a bad day or if this is normal. But a nice touch was that they did allow small children to come and sit inside the ropes, so long as they didn’t touch the glass enclosure.
So a long wait to have the view obscured – we would have been much better off using the time to view other exhibits in the museum. If you want to see the clock in action, just get there 5 or 10 minutes early and you will probably see as much over the crowd as we did from right in front.

Been several times. Excellent place. Now especially better when you can book a time slot for entering the museum, so no need to queue now, however there is miscommunication on the website about booking kids tickets and also the web site says that ticket office is shut there, but when we turned up there with kids, we were told off in a rude form that we should have gotten the free tickets for kids at the ticket office, that according to the web site is shut. So we were talked upon in a rude form for following their own instructions! Also the staff members in most of the rooms should be a bit friendlier towards kids in my opinion. However, there were only a handful that were very positive towards young kids, as this encourages visits to museums with young kids…

The world famous museum. Number 6 in the Top 10 most popular museums in the world, with 1.7 million visitors per year. What is undoubtedly great about the museum is the possibility to enter at any time and to stay as long as you like... And so we did, as we had 4 free hours before the Sapsan. In a week, of course, all the exhibits of the Hermitage cannot be seen, but in 4 hours it is quite possible to try. If you want to see new expositions (in our case, “Two Palmyras” and “Oman at the Hermitage”), and also make sure that all the old expositions are in their proper places. We generally succeeded. The ticket price, by the way, is 1000 ₽. Bought online from the museum website.

We had amazing experience in Saint Petersburg in Winter 2022.
That was cold winter without any big group or any sort of mass tourism there. we could walk easily in the museum. Visit our favorite halls and watch painting for long time without annoying from other people.
Believe or not, we stayed in front of da Vinci painting for some minutes and we were the only people in the hall.
All in all I highly recommend to visit Hermitage museum in winter time. You can experience same as walking in the private gallery, not one of the biggest and the most popular museum in the world

The Palace complex of the State Hermitage is situated on the banks of Neva river, having amazing Baroque architecture, with wonderful collection of paintings and artefacts. Winter Palace, small Hermitage, Old Hermitage, New Hermitage, General Staff building and Alexander Column are part of complex. Sections of Italian Art, English Art, Russian Art, Flemish Art, French Art etc., Classical antiquity, Treasure Galleries, Numismatics, Jordan stair case, Peter Hall (small throne room, War gallery, Peacock clock, Leonardo da Vinci room, Large Throne room, Gold drawing room, Italian sky light hall, the Crouching Boy of Michelangelo, 19th century B.C. statue etc. are must watch. Needs minimum 4-5 hours to visit main areas of the complex and 6 pm is the closing time of Museum.

Probably this is the only surviving residence of the Tsars in the city center. Nowadays it’s mainly known as the building in which the treasures of Hermitage Museum are guarded. In the architecture of the palace, you can easily recognize Bartolomeo Rastrelli’s style.

Overall I think the museum was okay, but as it was such a large one, my tour guide was incapable of explaining anything in detail to me. I asked him what the enormous statue was, and he responded saying that, "this is the main statue of Russia, no actually it's the Russian statue". Whereas the research I did when I got home said that it was the 'Russian Hermitage Statue'. He himself was not aware and this fact annoyed me. The museum may be good but it's too large to be explained by one guide. I learnt absolutely nothing out of it, and it wasted my $70, not to mention my time too.

Vano I
Moscow, Russia3,266 contributions

Hello, I am in St. Petersburg from the 12th to 16th of February, I would like to know if the 2 Da Vincis, the Madonna Litta and the Benois Madonna will be on show or if they are still on loan. I would really like to see these paintings.

Hi! The Madonna Litta is in Italy at the Museo Poldi Pezzoli in Milan until February 10th and then it'll return to the Hermitage.
I think the Benois Madonna is in Italy too, at the Uffizi in Florence, in the same dates.
If you write to or search on the Hermitage website, you'll probably find all the informations. Good travel!

When we visited H last summer, the lines were crazy, Advanced purchases (aka, vouchers) were virtually useless. IMHO, the best option is to find a local guide, who (for a small fee in USD) should be able to get you in much faster than waiting lines (could easily be 3 hrs).
