Erarta brings under one roof Russia's largest private Museum of Contemporary Russian Art (with over 2,000 works in its collection) and one of the branches of its international Galleries (others located in London, New York and Zurich). Erarta building with an overall floor space of 8,600 sqm (currently being expanded to 10,200sqm) opened its doors in September 2010 but has already been nominated for Russia's museum of the year in its first year of existence. The Museum is especially worth visiting for its creativity, not only exhibiting other artists' works but also acting as an author itself with unique projects such as "U-Spaces" (total installations created by the Museum itself to immerse the viewer in a particular world), "Theatre with no actors" (the world's only multi-media play whose cast is made up exclusively of characters from paintings with special audio and video effects bringing them to life), "Art-literature" (accompanying essays of experts and regular visitors' thoughts about particular works of art, helping explain what kind of emotions they trigger in others), "Art-animation" (videos and cartoons transforming a two-dimensional painting into a story prolonged in time). Erarta building also has a restaurant, a cafe and several museum shops offering gifts, prints and books and is open every day (except for Tuesdays) from 10am to 10pm

This contemporary Art Museum is a novel way to end your touring of all the great palaces in St. Petersburg. The architecture is modern and well designed and the guides are knowledgeable. It is a cultural center hosting unique and topical exhibitions by Russian artists from all around the country. As a collector and previous gallery owner I was more... More

This new art museum is a great experience with good exhibition of modern Russian art. The temporary exebition has some really good works where you get good insights into society. The temporary exebitions were excellent. There is a good cafe with lovely cakes. So all in all a must see for art enthusiasts.

I was pleasantly surprised to notice that this art museum is even better than the Stockholm Moderna Museet. I had good laugh at some pictures and after exhausting ourselves we had the loveliest lunch at the cafe Erarta

Erarta is a fantastic museum of contemporary art. Its value is not only in the works and exhibition quality but especially in the ability to engage the visitor on the contemporary meaning of art and the possibility for everyone to experience it.

After immensely enjoying St Petersburg's superb collections of old art at the Hermitage and of modern art at the General Staff Building I experienced the Erarta Museum as the perfect contrast and follow up. Really recommended to see this contemporary Russian art museum, refreshing after traditional art museums of St Petersburg - though they are great too. Takes at least two - three hours to visit, nice cafeteria and books / prints for sale.
