Before I came to Kaliningrad I had no idea that such a huge percentage of worlds amber derived from this region. It's crazy to think about 300 million years how a unique set of circumstances led to it.
This gives a story of the region and a ton of amber displays as well..

i work at the Amber museum but i write this reference not to advertise the museum but to make some moments clear. The exposition consists of both originals (of 3-5 cent. AC, of 17-18 cent., of the early 1930-40s, contemprorary objects) and replicas of other articles we haven't got the originals of. The largest piece of amber in Russia (4 kg) is situated in the exposition too. The ticket costs 180 rubles but there are discounts for students and free entrance at some particular days. You can take photos of the exhibits as much as you want but without flash. And the building where the museum is situated is worth visiting too as it is the 19th centure fortress. You can go to the the top of the tower to have a nice panoramic view at the city

A nice museum to see the Amber of various types, with insects inside and even the replica of the Vassa ship. Not big, but on a rainy day, was a warm place to save us😃

The museum itself is not very big. It was quite hot inside and you are forced to wear a mask. So, it is impossible to breathe because it was too sweltering, due to how many people were there. There are some interesting exhibits inside However, the majority of them are not originals, just the copies. The keepers were rude as well.
The only thing that impressed me was the possibility to make your own pendant out of a piece of amber. That was fun.

Be aware: if you were vaccinated by anything BUT Sputnik, they will not let you in.

Both my husband and I were visiting and showed our Moderna vaccination records (including a booster shot). That apparently wasn’t satisfactory. Too bad, we wish we could have enjoyed the amber museum.

Really enjoyed this museum. Went to a few other places during my 1 day visit there, but this place was by far the most interesting of all the sites I saw there. There is a really good restaurant attached to the same building. Very interesting and rustic decor. Food was excellent

This museum was probably my favorite thing on my Kaliningrad trip. An old castle houses the Amber Museum, and there is pretty stained glass throughout the building. I liked how they explained the scientific origins of amber and how it has been used in human history. There were good signs in English and Russian. Cool exhibits of amber jewelry, display items, and preserved animals and plants. There were a lot of rooms- I kept thinking it was finished, then a guide would point me to yet another area! The gift shop has a variety of amber products, and in the courtyard there are licensed vendors selling nice products for much cheaper than other stores in the city.

Intetesting exhibition about different types of amber. There was not many people at thay time and it was a little strange for me that all visitors must move in the same directios. But I understand the positive side about it. Friendly staff. They tried to speak with me in German, when they understood that I'm not Russian

Unfortunately, my last visit to the Amber Museum in Kaliningrad was real disappointment. Compared with amazing amber museums in neighbouring countries - Palanga, Lithuania and Gdansk, Poland, the one in Kaliningrad is like a poor cousin. Few diaramas unchanged since 1970s, few huge natural pieces of amber and some old-fashioned jewelry, probably from the same period, although the amber profile of Lenin is gone. No statistics on amber mining, no interesting unknown facts, nothing to inspire a curious and dedicated visitor. And this is the museum in the administrative center of the region, which, presumably, posesses over 90% of the worldwide amber resources. Pity, and not worth wasting your time.
