The monument is one of the most popular sights to see in Tver and it is one of the favourite places of the citizens of Tver.
A. Nikitin was a merchant from Tver and the first Europen who had reached India in the 15th century.
It is overlooking the Volga river and there is a great view of the City Garden and the two bridges over the Volga.
It's also a good place to walk in the park along the river.

onument of the famous sculptor. Piece of art. No politics, just a story. This is a monument to the first European who visited India. And this is not Vasco da Gama.

It's a monument, with the head of a horse on the front of a boat. Unique, though not necessarily a must see.

The monument overlooks the Volga, and is located within a quiet park, across from a Russian orthodox church. A nice monument, and on a sunny day, it would be an excellent object to take a picture with.

It's one of quite a few local attractions, so, if you happen to find yourself in Tver, make at least a picture with the merchant's boat nose.

Interesting architectural solution. In perfect harmony with the surrounding urban landscape. Also looks good on the background of the Volga. It is better to visit in the summer, walk through the bridges in winter, is dirty, and transport is not rare, but quite uncomfortable for visitors.

The monument to Afanasy Nikitin in Tver was erected in 1955 on the embankment... yes! Afanasia Nikitina)) True, then it was May Day. Authors: architect - G.A. Zakharov, sculptors - S.M. Orlov and A.P. Zavalov.
Personally, the monument gave me a slightly ambivalent impression. On the one hand, I liked it. It is installed on a hill. A large monument, expressive. Nikitin is so... colorful)) The four-meter figure of the traveler stands on a high pedestal. The composition also includes the nose of a rook with the head of a knight. Very good. On the other hand, the monument is separate. The boat “grew” from a cast-iron platform. It turned out somehow disjointed. But if you choose the “correct” viewing angle, from below from the embankment, you get Nikitin on a ship))

I think few people have read the famous “Walking across the Three Seas,” especially in the original. Meanwhile, it was published a long time ago, in a number of places Athanasius calls himself exactly that in the text, and the work generally ends with a Muslim prayer.
My wife and I were there in the second half of April, after lunch at the wonderful Parus restaurant nearby, also on the banks of the Volga (see my corresponding review).
The monument is grandiose, of course. It can be seen that it was built in communist times. The location is great, the view is breathtaking, everything around is neat and tidy.
Based on the above, some, by the way, conclude that Nikitin (this, by the way, is not a surname, but a patronymic) converted to Islam on the trip. But this is unlikely: in those days, at the border, the Christian faith was checked upon return very simply: circumcised or not. And in the first case they killed. So, judging by the fact that Athanasius died of his own death, everything turned out to be all right with this matter.
