Our guide Ekaterina was very knowledgeable. She was very patient as I was unable to walk very quickly. We saw many of the highlights and were educated about the history of the stations artwork and design. She also pointed out some interesting little tidbits. She was also flexible to let us end our tour without having to go back to our hotel as there were other sights we wanted to see. I wish I had taken the tour earlier during my stay because I felt confident about taking the metro by myself after doing the tour.

This was a continuation of a morning tour and our tour guide took us via Moscow’s efficient Metro system to the Red Square. We did not visit the Kremlin in this tour but St Basils Cathedral instead. There was an excellent history, in the guide’s fluent English, of the Red Square which included the architecture of the surrounding buildings. The Kremlin walls mark one side of the Red Square of course. Lenin’s mausoleum was closed in this afternoon tour but his was not a great loss. Our tour guide pointed out Stalin’s grave and the adjoining statue (on a horse) of Marshal Zhukov. This tour of St Basil’s was very much enjoyed by all of the family. It gave an interesting insight into the Orthodox church and Russian culture. It is not a functioning church but the architecture and artwork was stunning. There was a alle vocal choir and the acoustics were remarkable. The tour included a visit to the high end Moscow shopping district. We finished on time even though our guide was happy to show some more sights as it started snowing heavily.

Our tour guide met us at our hotel reception and took us via the metro to the closest station to Victory Park. This involved a walk past the grand archway celebrating the victory over Napoleon. It was winter and the walk through the fresh snow on a cold sunny day was spectacular. Also because it was winter the outside displays of military equipment (Axis and Russian) were closed. We were given an overview significance of the central column in front of the main entrance. The tour guide’s English was excellent. tIn particular the portrayal of fascism as a serpent that needed to be defeated. The museum itself was excellent and whilst there was a sense of nationalism we ever found this too overt or excessive. Whilst there was time for discussion we were also given time to look at displays at our own pace. There was a video presentation, in Russian, in the central hal area which nevertheless was excellent. There was a school group, dressed in cadet/military uniform, that did a formal presentation in the min hall. We found this touching. Our tour guide acted as a translator for an excellent lunch which we had at the main restaurant in the museum. Thank you Walks With Folks.

This was an excellent tour. Our tour guide Ekaterina met us at our hotel lobby in Moscow and took us to the closest metro station (Paveletskaya). She purchased Troika cards and the tour included one entry. Importantly she told us how to top them up so we could use them later. Regulations prevent these tours being run in peak hour so the metro was busy but not crowded. Our tour guide gave us an excellent history of the metro, the first line constructed and its role in the Great Patriotic War. Inevitably this included the role of Josef Stalin. There was a detailed discussion of the architecture and artwork as well as the key players in about half a dozen stations we visited. We were very impressed with the stunning detail and tastefulness of all of the artwork, and this included the ceiling. There were also many statues, many dedicated to the fallen in the Great Patriotic War. The presentation was very balanced, there was no overt sense of nationalism or any attempt to promulgate Bolshevism. The tour lasted half an hour longer than published and our guide left us at Paveletskaya metro station.
