Crowds of tourists, both local and international take in Old Arbat and its modern and gigantic peer – New Arbat. One reason visitors keep coming is no doubt Konstantin Melnikov’s famous private house, now open to the public and worthy of a visit. After exploring one of the oldest parts of Moscow, avoid the crowds and turn to the side streets and boulevards where calmness and affordable food is plentiful.

We stumbled upon this beautiful church while making our way to the Kremlin, it’s iconostasis is very nice but the awesomeness of the frescoes adorning the columns and vaulted ceiling is great.

The church in the stone version was built in the early 18th century on the site of a wooden one, just before the ban of stone construction, introduced by king Peter I. It came to us almost in the original version, because during the Bolshevik persecution of religion it was belonging to cartoons studio, and its employees carefully carried to the place in which they were placed by the fate. While, for example, from the neighboring church of St. Nicholas in Plotniki remained only unclear memories.
The architecture of the temple is typical for Moscow churches of the late XVII century. The quadrangle (the main volume) with five domes and a belfry arere connected by the low refectory. The chapels of the temple are located asymmetrically. This is a classic example of the Moscow Posad church of that time.
Church of the Transfiguration na Peskah (on the Sands) was  always impressing contemporaries. The outstanding Russian artist  Polenov who was living nearby, just one block from the church  captured it in the painting "Moscow courtyard". One of the variants of the canvas he gave to Turgenev. And the writer took the picture with him to France, where he was not parting with it. Even dying, Turgenev asked to arrange the picture so that it can be seen. It reminded him of home.
That's understandable. In the appearance of the church there is some aching sad note, nostalgia for the irretrievably gone time.

Moscow Church of our Saviour. Built originally in 1880s to fete God's deliverance of Russia from Napolean's army in 1812. Checkered history. Destroyed in 1930s by Stalin for Palace of Soviets, intended as biggest building in world, then abandoned. then rebuilt as exact replica in mid 1990s after religion revived when USSR collapsed, finished 2000, after many years when the excavated pit was used for swimming pool.

This is a lovely little church we accidentally stumbled upon, upon a stroll on the Old Arbat pedestrianized road.
While its interiors are rather plain, its exterior is pleasant.
