The Museum is located in a complex of buildings registered as the landmark of the late XVIII-XX centuries architecture. Muscovites call this old mansion the Osterman House after the name of its former owners. The 1981 Decree of the RSFSR Council of Ministers transferred the building to the All-Russia Museum of Decorative, Applied and Folk Art, which opened to visitors on July 21, 1981. The one and only museum in Russia, united in its collection works of arts and crafts of Russia - from folk art to works by modern artists. The museum organizes guided tours and workshops.

We were very lucky to have come across this lovely museum. Apart from the very wide and mind boggling variety of Amber there were exhibitions on local pottery trends and old historic furniture. Allow 2 hours plus depending on how many different exhibitions are on.

This is indeed a hidden gem, easily affordable, and refreshingly small but varied. Folk art, lacquerware, decorative and functional ceramics, clothing and more -- an eclectic tour through some of Russia's customs and history through its artful material products. I particularly enjoyed seeing the history...More

I was blown away by the collection in the Applied Arts Museum. First of all, it's housed in a former noblemen's estate, remodeled for Communist state functions and now is a largely unknown assemblage of every aspect of Russian applied art.... textiles, porcelain, furniture, glass,...More

The exhibition showcases some interesting works of Russian craftmanship, but I found it too centered on recent art and the collection far from complete. The building is a former palace and nice. The place is open till late on some days of the week.
