We did the 1 week Moscow and St Petersburg tour with Go Russia at the end of Feb/March expecting snow, ice, freezing temps etc. but alas there was none of this as both cities experienced their warmest periods on record. Still it did make walking around in our free time that much easier. Cannot fault Go Russia at all - the boooking process was excellent and chages to the itinerary we wamted were easily accommodated. The visa process is rather daunting but Go Russia made this as easy as possible. We had 2 full days and evenings in Moscow which was fine and we had some free time to explore. We stayed at the Marriott Courtyard which was very good and only 10 minutes walk from the Kremlin - the other hotel offered was quite a way out of the centre and would have involved metro trips to get to the centre. Our guide (Marina) was excellent and took great care of us - we were the only couple in the group. The overnight train to St Petersburg was excellent. We took the upgrade so had our own bathroom witha good shower and a heated toilet seat no less. We were the only couple in the whole carriage and i think the whole train only had a few passengers. May explain why the bar in the carriage was not available so no vodka nightcap. The journey was smooth and we were able to get a reasonable amount of sleep . 4 days in St Petersburg was just fine. There is so much to see but our guide (Natasha) was excellent in picking out the highlights. As in Moscow enough free time to look at and visit places not on the Tour. This time there were 4 of us in the group which made the visits easier. The time of year we visited along with the lack of chinese visitors due to the coronavirus resulted in palaces, galleries etc. being almost empty and so viewing was very easy. No complaints whatsoever and would have no hesitation in recommending Go Russia

Dear rclholl, Many thanks for finding time to post your detailed review on Tripadvisor which we hope would be very helpful to other travellers. We are glad to hear that you very much enjoyed your trip to Russia despite the fact that you could not experience the real Russian winter. Indeed, this year it was to some extent similar to what you expect to see in the Western Europe. Many thanks once again for travelling with us. Leonid

I travelled to St. Petersburg and Moscow with Go Russia late December 2019 to early January 2020, taking in New Year in Moscow. The only thing that went wrong with this trip was the weather... I had hoped to experience freezing temperatures and loads of ice and snow, but it was way too warm for that! Everything else was excellent. The tour guides were superb, and we were given sufficient time to do a bit of exploring ourselves too. The hotels in both cities were very comfortable, conveniently and centrally located. Pretty much everything we saw was fascinating. The two evening cultural events (traditional music and the “Nutcracker” ballet) were a wonderful and surprising addition to the itinerary. Furthermore, despite rumors I had heard to the contrary, the overnight train from St. Petersburg to Moscow was excellent. Last but not least, the visa service offered by Go Russia is superb, and really does make everything so much easier and stress-free. If I have one suggestion - it would have been a nice touch to have one or two organized evening meals at a proper Russian establishment, shared with my traveling companions (both BrIrish, and the German / French groups). But that’s a minor point in what was otherwise a wonderful and memorable holiday! Highly recommended. I would definitely travel with Go Russia again.

We travelled to St Petersburg in early march for a week in the city. I found that Go Russia made the whole experience easy from making the booking, assisting with the visa and arranging for us to have an excellent guide (Natasha) in the City. We stayed at the Petro Palace (seperate review) which was really close to Winter Palace/St Isaac's/Admiralty. The taxi from the airport, the drivers we had in the city/excursions were very helpful. Our week was organised with daily trips (city taxi tour, Hermitage, Peterhof, Catherine's Palace and Yusupov Palace - Natasha as our Guide, it felt like an exclusive experience, she is passionate and knowledgeable. I think we were so fortunate that the lack of overseas visitors enabled us to see the Palaces without hindrance. It would have been nice to see the City with snow and the river/canals frozen, but as the temperature was above the norm this was not possible; just wish the visit could have been longer. I recommend Go Russia to anyone wishing to visit Russia.

We have just returned from New Year in Russia. We would not hesitate in recommending Go Russia and would definitely book with them again. All enquiries were responded to very quickly, assistance with the visa application process was invaluable, transfers on time etc. We had great seats (row 4) to the ballet and our guide (Natasha) in St Petersburg was so knowledgeable and really made the trip for us.

Thanks to Go Russia we have just returned from one of the best holidays I can honestly say we have ever had.

We booked the tour through Go Russia in London, that included tours of Moscow and a cruise from Moscow to Saint Petersburg and of course tours of Saint Petersburg. We spent 5 nights in Moscow, 6 nights on the cruise and 6 nights in Saint Petersburg. The hotels In Moscow & Saint Petersburg were centrally situated and top class. The ship, the crew and the food were all exceptional, it was a very relaxing cruise on the Volga and lakes. Our very knowledgeable tour guides in Moscow, Saint Petersburg and on the cruise kept us very busy and we learnt so much from them of these beautiful cities, towns and Russia. We had such fun with all of them.

I would highly recommend booking through Go Russia if you would like to visit Russia. All my emails and queries were attended to and answered timeously. They also assisted me with my application form for a Russian visa. The whole trip was planned professionally to the last detail and all transfers, drivers and guides were on time. Everything went perfectly.

Would we book another trip to Russia through Go Russia……..most definitely!!!!

Trip was amazing. Everything went smoothly and according to plan. Tour guides were excellent and knew their subject inside and out, also helped with SIM card and Troika pass. Drivers all arrived on time and were waiting for me outside train carriage. Hotels were comfortable and centrally located, staff friendly and spoke English. In Moscow I was a short walk from the metro, purchased a 3 day Troika metro pass. A highlight was the Bolshoi, not only a world class performance but the venue is simply dazzling, all gold and red velvet. So much history and culture. Busy days but still free time to stroll Gorky Park and cruise the rivers and canals of Petersburg. Thanks for organizing such a memorable tour.

A very positive experience. I felt very reassured with all of the information received and the handling of the visa which was particularly easy via Go Russia in Germany. No glitches with the pick ups and no delays with the guides. First trip to Russia and I was impressed, so much so that I would book with Go Russia again when I eventually travel back and see more of the country. Julia from Go Russia was extremely competent and helpful.

Just returned back to the States from Ukraine tour with GoRussia Tours. I had a private tour. The tour exceeded my expectations. The food, lodging, sights, history were amazing. GoRussia Tour Group was very responsive, professional, and delivered. Made traveling during CoVID very easy. Our guide Diane in Lviv and Natasha in Kiev were fantastic. Could not ask for better guides. Very knowledgeable, responsive to my needs and professional. Great attitudes. I will use GoRussia Tour Group for my future travel needs in counties that they support.

travelled with go russia on the moscow, st petersburg and some surrounding towns (novgorod, vladimir, zusdal) trip end of october / start of november. all contact in advance with go russia was quickly and clearly answered. upon arriving it became clear this wasn't the type of group trip i was used to. there isn't a permanent tour guide but you get transferred from place to place by a driver and at every place there is local guide. not a problem at all, it just wasn't fully clear to me when booking.

all transfers were there on time and accompanied us upto the train entrance (if we had to catch a train). the guides were knowledgeable and very interested in sharing that knowledge. the overall program was good and i believe we visited most of the highlights. after the arranged tour we did add another couple of days to look around in st petersburg and later on again in moscow on a bit slower speed.

a nice trip which i would advise everyone to take if you get the chance.

Dear bartraliving, Thank you very much for your great review of your experience when travelling with Go Russia. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed the programme, we also thank you for your positive feedback for our guides and drivers. You are correct in saying that your trip was not an escorted holiday meaning (and we never advertise this as such). Apart from Moscow and St. Petersburg you have visited smaller towns of the Golden Ring – medieval Novgorod and Vladimir and beautiful Suzdal. So that our customers have better experience we always use local guides who know their region in detail. It also give a unique chance to our travellers to hear various views on the Russian history, culture, etc as compared when travelling with just a one guide all the way. Many thanks for your review and travelling with us. Elena Go Russia Customer Services

We went on this trip in June 2019 - a pensioner couple, one with some health issues.
We had been to Russia before, and one of us manages some Russian (non-native).

We wanted to experience the Trans-Siberian Railway and get to Lake Baikal. We contacted a couple of specialist travel agencies in London, but the only one that responded quickly (more than a week earlier than the next one) and which offered a great choice of tailor-made possible trips was Go Russia.

It was going to be a train trip to Lake Baikal with stopovers in some big cities along the way, including sightseeing tours.

Right from the start Go Russia were helpful and answered our many questions patiently. We even got an early booking discount from them. They organized the trip amazingly well. Go Russia sorted all our travel tickets (planes and trains), booked very well-located and excellent quality hotels in all destinations. In each place/city English-speaking guides met us, helped us (even with our cases), took us on tours, saw us out to the station, and we were ferried by very reliable cabs/cars between hotel and station and tour locations. All the guides were very knowledgeable, enthusiastic, friendly and helpful. It was like meeting friends. Probably we would have got along without knowing a word in Russian. Young people in most places managed varying degrees of English, and in all places we saw signs with English text as well, e.g. even in Irkutsk you have the street names on the walls in English too. The Russians themselves in the street proved again that despite the fact that they don't wear the Anglo perma-grin, they are extremely helpful and friendly when approached, while they don't foist themselves on you without being asked.

We hadn't gone without any prior knowledge of Russia, but we still learnt a lot of new things from the excellent guides. There is no space here for details of our visits to Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk etc. - but in each place there was a wealth of input culturally and otherwise. We crossed and got close to some of the great Russian rivers, Volga, Kama, Yenisey, Ob, Angara, etc.

Of course, when you go to another country, don't take all your home expectations with you (don't look for sausage and mash). Shop assistants don't grin all the time there (no "please" and "thank you" all the time), and it takes a bit of getting used to to the style of Russian waiters: they bring the meals from the kitchen as they get ready, so while one of us was nearly finishing with his meal, the other one was still waiting for hers. But we enjoyed it anyway.

Because this was a railway trip primarily, the hotel stays were short and before travelling on we would have had to leave the baggages at stations or hotel lobbies while doing the sightseeing. What we did, and what I would recommend to others on this kind of trip is pay a little extra at the hotel for "late departure". It doesn't cost that much, especially in the grand scheme of things, as this isn't a budget excursion anyway (though prices/costs on the trip are not high). With this late departure arrangement you can go back to your hotel room after the city tour to freshen up (take a shower, use the toilet in peace) before getting back on the overnight train. All the hotels were very flexible with this.

A long train adventure like this means you have to contend with train toilets, which can be a nightmare. Most trains we got were good enough in this, and some even had a shower cabin, which can be used for a small fee paid to the attendant. But there were some which needed a strong stomach (a little trick: try to go to the toilet nearest to the attendant, and preferably not to the one that is used mostly by men). Also, for a trip like this it is a good tip to have a spare toilet roll but especially wet wipes with you. You have to get used to the terrible idea of putting the soiled loo paper into a bin in front of you and not down the toilet.

As for sleeping on the train, that takes a tough person to manage, or else you don't sleep much - rattling along Siberia with lots of other trains trundling by in the opposite direction, sudden jerks to and fro and sideways, probably needs a litre of vodka to endure. Luckily, the trip is broken by stays in hotels where you can catch with a bit of sleep.

Incidentally, it is worth paying extra for first class travel on the train, which means you have the cabin to yourself and you don't have to cram in with all sorts of snoring co-passengers. You either get a dedicated first class cabin with only two beds/benches or they book you all four seats and beds/benches for you in the cabin.

Some people advise taking rucksacks, saying that suitcases are cumbersome on the train. We took cases (not massive ones), and we were fine. We saw people with backpacks struggling. So, don't worry about taking a case.

Because of certain health issues I am a reluctant vegetarian. But one must realize that the Russians are not used to this yet and they cannot make a distinction between vegan and vegetarian (the Russian word for both is the same too), and it is virtually impossible to find a sandwich anywhere without chicken or turkey in it. But there are pretty good shops in the towns along the way, and it is possible to find suitable stuff. Although fresh crusty rolls or good bread seem to exist only in some good hotels for breakfast, not in shops. But the Russians have very nice filled buns (with meat, fish, cabbages, potatoes etc), "пирожки" [peeroshkee], mini-pies. Definitely try the ones with a cheese or cabbage filling or with mushrooms (or the meaty ones). There are sweet versions of this bun as well.

If you are a first time visitor, of course, in Moscow don't miss visiting the Kremlin (its historic churches and treasury) or don't leave out the Tretyakov Gallery (Третьяковская Галерея), which easily rivals the Ermitage in St. Petersburg. But if you had seen them on an earlier trip already, you might consider visiting the previously "forbidden town" of Star City outside Moscow, more precisely the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, which we did. For instance, you can find mementos of Tim Peake's stint there.

We were a bit worried about the crazy political situation in the world before travelling, especially concerning the use of our bank cards (thinking of the sanctions madness). But we didn't have any problems paying with a MasterCard credit card or with the withdrawal of cash with a British bank card. But before travelling we had informed our banks of our travel plan to minimize the risk of blocking this facility. We also took some cash to convert just in case we might have problems with the cards. We took Euros, which is probably the safest at present. Exchanging British pounds can be tricky, as they don't want them everwhere. We found that the best and easiest deal was offered by Rosbank (Росбанк). They didn't even want my passport for ID and there was no commission charged, while their exchange rate was the best we found (avoiding behind-gates exchangers). Maybe it matters that the majority shareholder in Rosbank is the international group, Société Générale.

For paying in shops and markets 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 rubel notes plus rubel coins are most useful. Higher denominations can cause problems with change for small things. We found we were using mostly 100 and 1,000 rubel notes for paying. They often ask if you have one or two rubels in coins to make it easier for them to give you change.

As I said, we probably would have managed with no Russian knowledge at all most of the time, though, for instance, at the Rosbank branch in Moscow the very friendly cashier lady didn't speak any English. Generally, my advice would be to learn at least the Russian alphabet, because if you can decipher signs, it can help a lot. My wife at first got acquainted with "peck-toe-paa' " before she learnt that "ресторан" is actually pronounced as "restorahn", i.e. restaurant, but if she had known the alphabet at least, she could have guessed on her own.

We flew by Aeroflot to make the trip totally Russian, and they were good and on time, and I was pleased that they use trusty and proven Boeings on these routes and none of the types that have been in the news in connection with crashes.

The only negative I could mention is that the Russian authorities can be rather difficult with tourists on the official level. On the visa application there are amazingly intrusive questions. I was asked if I was a war criminal, for instance, etc. In Moscow at immigration it took about two hours to get through, and we encountered some unnecessarily intrusive security checks. Sadly, it reminded us of US immigration checks. It made me appreciate British immigration. I hear the Russian government is thinking of making tourism easier on the official level too. That will be welcome.

By the way, it may be a good idea to hurry up with your trip to Lake Baikal, as the Russian environment minister is proposing restrictions on tourism to the lake, as its water quality is being affected by the huge increase in tourist numbers there (mainly from China, apparently).

But again, the whole trip was organized by Go Russia with such precision and careful forethought that I couldn't think of a more perfectly organized tour. The trip wasn't cheap, but it was still value for money considering what it contained and what a unique experience it gave us.
