An interesting monument, located right in the centre of the town. The Museum square, where it's currently placed, also houses the Franciscan church and the History Museum. Worth a look.

Unless you do some research, this won't mean a lot, or if you take the the free walking tour, the stories are really interesting.

This Obelisk which I understand was once in Piata Unrii, is now in an older section of Cluj, in a square surrounded by restaurants. Our tour guide gave us the story of the unfortunate person who funded it who was never recognized in his lifetime. Worth a stop but accumulating some graffiti.

On each side of the obelisk there is etched a scene in stone. The story of the patron who esteemed Carolina so much that he parted with his money in order to build this obelisk is quite moving

The obelisk is situated in a square fool of restaurants and cafes; I wonder how it has not been yet vandalized; should be better protected or presented to tourists.

Tucked away off the main Street and opposite a delightful church.
I imagine in the summer this little square is a real buzz with loads of people enjoying drinks and food outside whilst enjoy the tranquility of the place.
The only negative thing to say - why oh why do people like to graffiti everywhere...

During our free walking tour our guide showed us many attraction/sites. This one in particular has a very interesting story.
A wealthy businessman of the city commissioned the erection of the obelisk to curry favour with the king, (spending all his money in the process) gaining noble statesman. It backfired as it only demonstrated his vanity and was disgraced from the city.
Essentially a Cluj town big-wig who wasn't actually a noble man, was dead keen to be enobled by the ruling Hungarians. The people of Cluj wanted a nice monument to the lovely queen of the time who'd been for a visit. There wasn't enough money to do it (that theme comes up a lot in the long past and also more recent history of this country). This bloke donated a shed-load of dough to see the obelisk monument built, but when it was all done and dusted and people found out his motivation, they were collectively miffed. There was no enoblement and he was kicked out of town and died poor and lonely.
On the Western part/face there is an image of the Emperor and his wife's visit to the hospital, offering money to poor woman standing on her knees at the gate. With the disgraced businessmen looking on, you will see his head has been knocked off as a response to his vainness. Highly recommend taking a tour to get an understanding of the city hearing all the wonderful stories.

The ten meter obelisk, the angel wearing the effigy in a crown of laurels and the four stone eagles that hold laurels in their peaks are a masterpiece of Anton Csürös and Nagy Samuel. The two Biedermeyer style bas-reliefs showing the symbol of the city constitute a masterpiece of the renowned Viennese sculptor Iosif Klieber.
