Overview
Hoia Baciu forest near Cluj-Napoca is a seemingly quiet woodland that became famous in 1968 when a UFO was photographed right above it. After that, strange lights were spotted at night and inexplicable energy was recorded in the area. Even the vegetation looks weird in some parts and some say it's haunted, with paranormal activity. Let's go on a night tour to see it!

The tour is not supposed to be scary, it is a presentation tour. But part of the presentation is also a list of the inexplicable things.

Do you dare... at night?

I had a great time with Alex on the early morning tour. I am an avid hiker, nature lover, and while I am a skeptic when it comes to the paranormal, I enjoy entertaining the idea of the spookier things, so this tour was perfect for me. I was the only guest on the tour, but Alex's friendly and calm manner instantly put to rest any concerns I had about getting into a car with a stranger in a foreign country so we could wander in a creepy forest where people have allegedly gone missing in the past. Alex picked me up at 7am in early October, and he pointed out a few interesting buildings along the way to the forest. The fog in the city was utterly picturesque, so I got some fantastic photos of Cluj from just outside the forest. Unfortunately the fog did not permeate the forest. The forest itself is beautiful, and it was fascinating to see so many strange elements all within close proximity. Alex brought a very down to earth perspective with his stories that felt extremely refreshing during a time when so many are focused on creating the most dramatic, exciting experience. I learned a lot about Romanian folklore and paranormal experiences as well as illegal logging in Cluj. Alex had a variety of photos and sound clips to show off some of the creepy experiences people had. The early morning light was perfect for photos- I got some really great ones during the 7-10am time frame. The tour was so delightful I find myself hoping I can return someday to eventually do the night tour!

We met up with Alex on a rainy Saturday night for our tour of the forest, his enthusiasm and knowledge of everything Hoia-Baciu was phenomenal you can tell he really enjoys sharing with people everything about the forest and he really cares about it, it's fairly close to the city so you will not be taking a long drive out to get there but there is a bit of hiking so wear proper shoes. We did the 3 hour night tour and time just flew by the way Alex tells stories and engages you in everything from old Romanian folklore to UFOs to trees.

Our guide Marius was just amazing. We had a great time. The location was interesting even for a sceptic such as myself. That was the great thing about Hoia-Baciu project, they do not try to cheapen the experience by faking stuff, but rather tell you interesting stories and giving you the possible factological explanations afterwards. Would definitely recommend Hoia-Baciu project to everyone visiting Cluj.

I had such a great time with Alex during the day tour (I wasn't quite brave enough for the night tour yet...). I think Alex is an excellent guide because he's genuinely curious about the forest and he isn't the type to make things sound scarier than they are just to be gimmicky. He can combine Romanian folklore, urban legend, scientific explanations, personal experience, and still-unanswered questions in a compelling narrative that you could listen to for hours. Also, just in case you're worried about being alone with a complete stranger in a forest in Eastern Europe, I want to reassure you that Alex is a nice guy who will never make you feel uncomfortable. I wasn't worried at all, but I thought I'd put it out there anyway for those who may be hesitant to go on this tour. I felt really safe with him. I also appreciate that he never laughed at me even though I was quite clumsy during the hike going up to the forest. (He lent me one of his walking sticks, which was really helpful. He also had some tick repellent with him. I suggest wearing something that completely covers your legs when you go to the forest.) Thank you again for the tour, Alex! Wishing you all the best.

My husband and I took a tour tonight of the Hoia-Baciu forest. It is a quite strenuous trek, but well worth the effort. We're didn't get any evidence of the paranormal but our guide, Alex, was so knowledgeable about the legends and the tales that we believed it could happen, to the right people at the right time. Alex is also very knowledgable about the trees. It was amazing to see trees that are twisted or grow upside down. Overall, time and money well spent!
