Banffy castle in Bonchida (Bontida) is being restored. Please note that the restauration als serves as a training ground for young restaurators.

Since I have last been here (five years ago) progress has clearly been made, but it is slow!

Covered by scaffolding, looking as deserted, you can hardly notice it. Not an attraction for awhile.

The castle is a masterpiece of architecture, unfortunately not very well preserved. The collection of paintings inside is impressive. Worth it if you are a fan of art museums.

We are a group of friends who city break across Europe and always visit the local art museums. This is one of the most disappointing. Building is impressive though a bit grubby at present and most is off limits.
Gallery space upstairs is good in terms of space and light. Rooms needing attention.
Art itself is nothing special with exception of Gregorescu and Elena Popea. Rest of very average quality.
In another part of ground floor is another gallery space and at the moment very good exhibition of Romanian artist Mattis-Teutsch whose work compares well with early Kandinsky and Malevich. If you are around while this is on go see.

Bánffy Palace, which now houses the Museum of Art , is a special architectural beauty of the city of Cluj. The noble Hungarian family Banffy, Dionisie Bánffy with his son Gheorghe Bánffy, one of the most well known families in Transylvania, were the ones who built the imposing architectural masterpiece between 1774 and 1785

Nice building in the best looking square of the city.

Went there yesterday without really knowing what we were going to find on the inside. Had a few expositions which were alright. Some Romanian painting and some sculptures.

Actually liked them both.

PS there was also some modern stuff that didnt make me think.

We have visited the palace many times, during our stay in Cluj. It is currently the home of the Art museum which is a must see. There is also a mineral expo on in the basement room, which is also a must, many gems for sale. In the court yard there are stalls selling trinkets for the up coming Martisor. If you have a chance this is the perfect time to visit the palace.

Nothing really special. Instead of coming here you should go visit the ethnographic village where you can have more cool experiences

Banffy is an interesting palace with a tremendous history. It is a shame that it is literally crumbling away. Today part of it is an art museum which deserves higher than my overall rating. But the palace could be put to so much better use with period furnishings in addition to the artwork. The deterioration of the structure after years of neglect is quite evident and one can only hope that funds from somewhere can be found to save it and restore Banffy to its glory.
