We were three people on the Maxi route (the intermediate level), all of us had prior experience with trekking bikes and flat forest roads but nothing close to this.

It was not easy, some of us fell more than 10 times during the ~2h downhill ride, but the incidents were at low speed and very controlled, no one was seriously harmed, we just got back up and kept going. This is a risky activity and should be taken as such.

It is definitely not a walk in the park for the beginner but if you're courageous/crazy a bit, it becomes magnificent. A ton of beautiful landscapes, long single tracks, some jumps and big rocks. The guide (Hugues) was super helpful, giving us tips and being especially patient with my fiancee who was at times struggling to keep up (almost losing hope in the process).

All in all it was definitely worth the money and the experience was overwhelming, rough and filled with adrenaline. Would do again.

This downhill bike ride from the top of the Cirque de Mafate to St Gilles les Bains is absolutely amazing. The start was a bit slow as all of the riders were "signed up" in town. Then the long ride up to the top of the Cirque. A few minutes to enjoy the view and then the ride begins.

The first stretch is on steep roads. After that, the trail becomes a gravel road, single track forest path, muddy path, single track through sugar cane plantations, then finally roads with a stop for fresh sugar cane juice.

The bicycles are top notch and in great condition. The cycling is steep, rough, and difficult in parts. It is almost all downhill so your hands and wrists get a bit sore from constant braking. At times, the path is narrow and would be considered a bit dangerous in the USA. Never mind that. As long as you have some experience mountain biking, this trip should not be missed!

Of note, the instructions by the guides were great--if you speak French. If you speak only English, you will be a bit out of luck. Also, be careful which company you book this through. Not all wholesalers are honest and may try to divert you to other trips.

The organisation was great for the day (a ride down the mountain from the Les Trois Bassins (a wonderful viewpoint). We had a bike check (good full suspension gear) and a short briefing (in French and English) on safety and braking (especially for those less familiar with this kind of riding) and then set off on a short run that got people familiar before the full ride.
We rode at our own pace with stops every now and again to rest or grab a drink. At each stop he gave a short briefing on the next section so we knew what ti expect and where to turn etc. A great ride, through rocky areas, through forest and mud, through sugar cane plantations and local villages.
I thoroughly recommend it, and there are varying levels of trip from beginner to experienced.

No matter what they say on the website- this is definitely not for beginners (we`ve booked the classic one, not the advanced tour), and one will need to know already VTT before trying it! The instructions were given to us in less than 5min- then here you go...
Also, breaks are done o9nly for the ones in front of the group, if you remain at the back the time you take to arrive to the next meeting point that are moving already
Also- check meteo before booking (yes, might be a challenge...)- if it starts to rain roads get muddy and it`s even harder to do it.
Overall- quite dangerous, I would never try something like this again. We`ve just bought the marketing:(

The guide was nice and knew definitely what he was doing, nurse and mechanic all in one. The booking and the gear were disappointing. As we aren't the tallest and small bikes and gear is sometimes hard to find, we went to see the shop telling about our requests (including our brought from home cycling shoes) beforehand. As we got our gear on top of La Maïdo, there were no bikes in our sizes, no pedals for our shoes, not enough helmets in the right size and the protection looked as a shark had bitten through them. We truly hope this gets better. The ride is a lot of fun but definitely needs some experience to be ridden on.

The best downhill I've never done. Differents types of sections: freeride, crosscountry, downhill, jumps, alwayx with an awesome nature and landscapes. It's necessary to have some technique and a good shape to enjoy all the descent. I suggest this route to everybody who love downhill and come to Reunion. The equipment is good and the staff is great. Really an amazing experience !

Soy de Barcelona y de verdad vale la pena hacerlo, es una pasada!
