Mother church of Panay
Mar 2021 • Friends
While this church's titular saint is St. Elizabeth of Hungary, people associate it more with Our Lady of the Candelaria. Thousands of devotees flock to the place every February 2 and pay homage especially to the statue of the BVM (considered as miraculous) enshrined up the stairs on the façade of this late 19th century church. Being the cathedral of the biggest archdiocese in Panay, this can be considered as the Morher Church of the island. Its interior is quite simple but colorfully painted. The central nave is flanked on both sides by statues ten of the twelve Apostles (excluding Judas Iscariot, while the statue of Saint Peter, along with that of Saint Paul, is by the main altar. The belfry is detached from the church and is located right across it.

Majestic

The Church shows great deal of majestic and pride. It gives a sense of awe and relaxation. Inside makes your soul pray and connect with the maker.

Santo Nino stair in front of this church
Feb 2020 • Solo
I enjoyed my visit here: beautiful columns along the aisles, stained glass windows, beautiful altar, etc.

Outside are two staircases leading to the statue of Santo Nino that in encased in a glass container.

Per my driver/guide, I learned that this statue appeared to be growing bigger!

The Jaro Cathedral and the Miraculous Lady of the Light
Dec 2019
My first day in Iloilo and I had to continue the 9-day Misa de Gallo Masses prior to Christmas Day. The simbang gabi for Jaro Cathedral is at 8:00 p.m. and together with two companions, we arrived at the Cathedral early. Since we had time, we bought candles and went to the lighting chapel. I was introduced to the Our Lady of the Light which according to the locals have been accorded with many miracles and answered prayers. The structure itself projects a nice baroque style reflective of the old Spanish churches with steeples and high celings. The grounds were quite impressive with the old bell tower serving as the main landmark across the street. One will also find Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal and the Statue of the Sacred Heart providing a very spiritual ambiance of the Church. What was most impressive is the full packed cathedral wherein every pew is occupied and the church goers are entralled by the Latin prayers during the Mass.

The Splendor of its Beauty
Dec 2019
The colonization of Spain for centuries have produced in this country aesthetically designed cathedrals that by just looking at them calms the mind and the senses. Jaro Cathedral is by no means not an exception to this impression of beauty. In spite of almost a hundred and fifty years since it was initially erected, the building itself provides peace and solace to people entering its doors.

Well attended Masses
Jul 2019 • Solo
This Cathedral looks older than its 1874 roots but was rebuilt in 1956 after an earthquake decimated it in 1948.

It is Baroque but the spires are Gothic. The Belfry is across the road and from my quick look seemed intact.

I arrived in dry weather at 0600 hours on a Sunday. It then teemed until 0720, but stopped before I caught a taxi back to Richmonde Hotel.

What I thought was the 0600 hours English Mass started at 0630. Both it and the previous Mass at 0500 were very well attended, with some standees down the back.

The altar flowers were beautful and the choir good, though they are probably better when in the local language as more parishioners would then sing the hymns. The Cathedral has a beautiful fresco.

It was P70 by taxi each way from or to Megaworld Boulevard.

Our Lady of Candles
Jul 2019 • Couples
Jaro Cathedral is a prominent symbol of Catholic faith of the Ilonggos. Here, you can find the famous Our Lady of Candles or the " Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria" which is enshrined on the second floor of the cathedral outside of the church. Her feast is celebrated every 2nd of February. It is the first Marian National Shrine and it is one of the most celebrated feasts by the Ilonggos where masses are held from 4:30 in the morning until 7:00 in the evening on an hourly basis.

History tells that the original church was destroyed by an earthquake Caycay in 1948 and was later repaired in 1956 by the first Archbishop of Jaro, the late Arch. Jose Maria Cuenco. Furthermore, it is also the first Marian image canonically crowned personally by the Pope and saint, Pope John Paul II.
