Remarkable Baroque central altar
Mar 2020
Another Spanish colonial church in the historic center of Trujillo located just one block southeast of Plaza de Armas, adjacent to the central market. The origin of this structure goes back to the 1550s, but over time important modifications were made especially after the 1970 earthquake.

The church is dedicated to Saint Augustine, traditionally the patron of the military, but after the Franciscans got in charge of the church this orientation was gradually lost. The central altar with goldleaf ornamentation still prominently contains the image of Augustine. Another remarkable image is that of the purple Christ, revered by retired people.

The central nave of the church is rather sober, which makes the Baroque altar pieces and pulpit stand out. Well worth a visit.

Surprisingly beautiful church with golden altar
May 2017 • Couples
We passed by on our way to dinner and we're stunned. This is one incredibly pretty Church with the most beautiful altar of 4-5 churches I've seen in Trujillo. Lots and lots of paintings and statues all over. We even stumbled on the end of a rosary being said and joined in. Fully functional Church so mind your reverence.

It's a poor maintained church

They need restorations and improvements. No tourism component either no personnel. It's not place to visit but a place to pray.

Impressive Altar
Dec 2015 • Solo
A nice colonial church on Jr. Bolivar (in between the Central Market and Plaza de Armas). The interior is rather simple but contains a beautiful gilded main altar which gives the church an impressive feel. There are also nice religious paintings on the sides. Overall, this church lends itself to a brief tourist visit.
