Since 1534 when killer conquistador Pizarro founded the city, this square has been the main plaza of Trujillo. It is well laid out and well maintained. Some trees provide shade and there are benches to sit. Most remarkable I found the statue of a naked man, symbolizing freedom (see the torch he is holding). At his feet are other sculptures in social realist style representing the arts and labor.

Wished there would have been more shade, as during the day the place is bloody hot.

Beautiful central plaza. Very beautiful plaza day or night. A lot of security presence so I always felt safe and confortable.

An enjoyable square to walk around for a few hours.
Scenic & colorful architecture & landscape.
Lovely cathedral with a gorgeous painted ceiling.
Fountain in the middle of the square.
Easy to waist a couple of hours in this area & well worth the effort to do so.

This is a beautiful plaza with a gleaming stone floor. We were lucky to meet the mayor of Trujillo there!

Don't get me wrong. I love Trujillo. In fact it's my favourite town in Peru by some distance, but what I will never understand is why they have seen fit to base the entire town around what is basically a graveyard. The original plaza would have been sheer, cheerful chaos, as is the case in every other plaza in Mediterranean-touched towns worldwide. Times then changed. Peru's anxiety not to lose its second city and to preserve its colonial heritage was to ban restaurants and bars (alcohol, anyway) from the area around it, thus guaranteeing that it would never attract people in the evening and make a a focal point for the town. This therefore drives people to the bright and trashy rubbish on the big avenidas that run away from the plaza. I have confirmed this, incidentally, with the chief of police on the edge of the plaza. All the buildings, therefore, are governmental departments and somber commercial ventures that close early, and what would have been the Latin version of Las Ramblas if they had only got their finger out and done it properly is a dire and depressing place after dusk. The monumental statuary is all right if you like that sort of thing, and the building quality cannot be argued with, but as an entirety, I'm sorry, but it is a long way short of the mark.

There is a lot of traffic in town, but all of a sudden you are in this very large, open square with beautifully restored, colorful buildings surrounding it. Lots of activity on a recent Sunday. Second to Lima; don't miss it.

Sunny Saturday off the cruise ship. Great place to people watch. Plenty of benches. Listen to the cacophony of car horns. McDonald’s has WiFi for a minimum purchase.

We walked to the Plaza de Armas with our guide and he explained the meaning of each figure and what they represented on each level of the central monument. The monument was designed by a German and it was interesting to be shown the couple of mistakes in the design. The naked male at the top had to be modified when the home of a former resident was converted into a convent.
The Cathedral was worth a visit but most is modern and has been restored twice because of earthquakes, the last in 1970.
Another former home of very wealthy owner is now the Reserve Bank, half of which has been converted into a museum. Security is very high here and we signed in after passing through a scanner. It is well worth a visit,
Another home acts as a private bank but the museum quality is not as well developed.
A large portion of the Plaza was covered by a mud slide in 2017 but there is no trace of this.
It pays to be alert around the area. Our guide was aware of two potential thieves and quickly guided us further around the plaza.
