The staff of the hotels where I stayed did not even know of the existence of this museum, and it was great. I suggest visiting before going to the archaeological sites, but you can also go afterwards and evaluate how much you learned. The museum gives a good overview of the history of Peru’s occupation, which is very useful as a background of your visit to the Trujillo area.

The museum looks very much like a South-American public university museum (old, poor, in decay), but the collection is amazing and the curation is very well constructed. I saw pieces here that were way more impressive than most of the ones in the well-maintained Huaca museums

Great little museum in colonial house with beautiful pottery
Aug 2019 • Couples
A walk through the ages of Peruvian history as depicted by pottery. Exhibits from the earliest settlers through to the Incas. We used a local guide which was very helpful to point out details but also got and English information sheet from the front desk. This is just a 2-3 minute walk from the main square and very much worth a visit. We enjoyed in immensely

Unless you understand Spanish you need a guide
May 2019 • Couples
This little museum is run by the National University of Trujillo. It is divided into 6 sections displaying the hunters and gatherers of 120,000 years ago through to the Chimu and Inca periods, There are some beautiful pottery displays as well as many other artifacts.

It could be very interesting if there were captions in English - a great opportunity for volunteers to translate. The Google phone translation was pretty useless.

Artifacts from Moche and Chimu’ civilization.

So don’t be put off by the exterior condition of this Old colonial building. Despite the need for several (hundred) gallons of varnish on the columns the contents of the museum are worth the time. The artifacts of both civilizations are pristine and revealing of the customs of both. We had a guide. There are no on-site doscents so bring your own for the full insight.

Small but interesting
Sep 2018 • Couples
This museum has artifacts from the Moche and Chimú cultures, plus a few things from the Nazca. It's fairly small but does have nice pieces. Worth a look if you're in the area.

Good luck finding it open!

We tried to visit on Tuesday, Dec 19, 2017. Opening time (in theory) is until 4:30 PM. We got there at 2 PM. Door is closed. We knock. A bemused doorman opens.
"What do you want?"
"We'd like to visit the museum"
"It is closed"
"But it says right here on the door it's open until 4:30. It' 2 now"
"Everybody left for an emergency meeting some place else"

Next day, Wednesday, Dec 20, 2017, we're back. It's 1:30 PM. Door is closed. We knock. Another doorman, even more bemused that the one from the previous day, opens.
"What do you want?"
"We'd like to visit the museum"
"It's closed"
"But it's 1:30 PM, it should be open until 4:30"
"Not today. You have to come early"
"But it is early, it's three hours before closing time"
"Everybody left for an emergency meeting some place else"
"We were told the same thing yesterday. Can we speak to a manager?"
"The manager is gone. There's only a secretary here, and he won't speak to you."
"But why is the museum closed so early? It says right here on the door it should be open until 4:30."
"You know, Christmas time is like that"

End of our little Trujillo Christmas tale...

Beautifully organised museum. It was empty when we were in it, but it's well worth a visit. Great artefacts and well described cultures (Chimu, Moche, Nasca, Incas...) and a superbly well preserved mummy woman with the skin still on. Well worth a visit!

Artifacts from the many ancient cultures from the area

A fascinating and educational overview of the many cultures - Chimu, Moche, Nazga - that populated the area before the Incans arrived.

Great museum displaying artifacts from numerous Peruvian cultures
Nov 2016 • Solo
Disappointed that you couldn't take pictures at the Museo Huacas de Moche? Come by here, they don't have the wealth of artifacts, but they have some very fine ones. Also interesting stuff from Nasca, Inca, and Chimu, plus some good art. Well described and laid out.

Small Museum in Trujillo
May 2016 • Couples
This museum is worth visiting to give you an overview of the different pre-Inca cultures that existed in this area of the Northern Coast. But it's much more interesting and worthwhile to visit the sites themselves if you have the time.
