We spent 2 days with Ito finding birds on our target list. And wow! We found them and many more. His birding skills are fantastic, and he's very professional and simply pleasant to be around. If you are a beginner or a seasoned birder with a target list to fill, Ito can accommodate you. When we come back to Panama, his company is the first one we will reach out to. We regret not finding him sooner in our birding travels through Panama.

My husband and I went on a wonderful 8 day birding trip in Panama. We traveled with 6 other friends and were very fortunate to be in the hands of 3 guides from Tamandua....Nando and his son Ismael Quiroz in Gamboa and along the Pipeline Rd, Josanel in the Anton Valley, and Ito Santamaria in his home area of Chiriqui Province. All these men were superb guides who knew their birds and were also good companions. Tamandua's organization was excellent: everything ran smoothly. And four wheel drive vehicles and tasty refreshments appeared when we needed them! Highlights of the trip besides many, many birds were hawks and owls. I cant name the hawks, but we saw a Speckled Owl in the Valle d"Anton and, thanks to sharp-eyed Ismael, a family of Costa Rican Pygmy Owls stacked on a branch. Parents and 3 juveniles were drowsy so we had a good long look at them. Our visit to the Chiriqui Highlands was a spectacular finale to our trip with two nights at one of the Los Quetzales Lodge's forest cabins where Ito's wife and sister cooked up delicious meals for us. We saw the Resplendent Quetzale there--several of them--- and numerous other birds that flew in in mixed flocks. Tamandua provides the best guides and birding experience we have ever had. We highly recommend them. Leila and Daniel Javitch

These guys provided terrific service and a wonderful half day tour of Pipeline Road. They knew particular trees that were favorites of particular birds. We got some fabulous photos taken through their scope. Be sure to take your own water and if you don’t have binoculars, tell them when you book so they will bring you some. I would go back with them anytime!

Our guide Jo collected the three of us in a mini-bus and we started at around 6pm alongside canal before going into Pipeline. Jo was very enthusiastic, passionate, and knowledgeable and we spotted about 70 birds in all. He had a great eye and ear for the birdlife. The organisation was very helpful and replied to all my emails promptly and when I messed up the says, couldn't have been more helpful. I give it a 4 and not 5 because one of our party was very new to birdwatching and the guide was more used to expert birders. Also we were expecting to go for lunch and because it was Saturday thus did not apply - this was not communicated adequately. A halfday would have been enough. The trip was very good. Better to be eith an expert guide otherwise you'll miss loads.

Our group of four persons took a six day birding trip organized by Tamandua. Our communications and booking with Tamandua were very clear, all details were fully explained, and emails to the company were replied to promptly. The office staff are very professional. Our guides in the field were Nando and Ismael Quiroz. This father and son team were great at finding us many birds and keeping logistics smooth. Nando is an excellent bird guide with knowledge of all bird calls and behavior. He and Ismael are also is a great companions to spend time with in the field. I gave Nando a list of birds that I would like to see and he did his very best to find them. Nando is a very professional bird guide and getting you seeing birds what makes him happy! Ismael can get the Swarovski scope on birds very quickly in dense forest! Nando works with and supports local communities to provide birding opportunities. During this tour we spent two days in the Gamboa / Pipeline road area then moved on to Nusangani / Guna Yala, Tortî, then on to Metetî in Darién province where we stayed the remainder of the trip. Nando lives near Metetî and he really knows how and where to find all of Darien specialty birds. The birding was well paced with water and food available when needed. We traveled by comfortable 4x4 vehicle to birding sites. Two of the days we traveled to birding sites via large dugout canoes on the Rio Chucunaque. During these trips we visited the village and trails at Nuevo Vigia and then downstream from Yaviza to a Harpy Eagle nest site. Yes, we saw the Harpy Eagle, a chick then an awesome adult landed at the nest. That was one bird, all the other birds were great too. Highlights included Dusky-backed Jacamar, Golden-green Woodpecker, Orange-crowned Oriole, Black Antshrike, Black Oropendola, Red-throated Caracara, like Double- banded Graytail, White-eared Conebill, Spectacled Parrotlet, Red-breasted Meadowlark, Yellow-Green Tyrannulet (endemic), White Hawk, King Vulture, Barred Puffbird, Long-billed Starthroat, Black-breasted Mango, and Sapphire-throated Hummingbird, & Striped Owl. Wow, those are just the highlights. We had a great time, I very highly recommend Nando & Ismael Quiroz and Tamandua as a tour company and guide for birding Panama.
