Efficient and quick passage for cruise passengers
The entry port and staging area for those of us on a cruise going for shore excursions. As such, we did not have much processing or waiting time in the area at all - we go direct to ship again with our passes. It was efficient and uneventful. Approaching the area by ship is not as impressive as approaching the Pacific side of the canal - do both if you can! This side is more business looking while Panama City is more like approaching Miami from the sea. Lots of container handling in the area too, both for local use and for container transfer by rail - quite a lot of containers go that way for cost savings if the cargo is not time sensitive.
Dear Ontario76, we appreciate you taking the time to review your experience at our port. We are pleased that access to the cruise was efficient and without incident. Have a good trip.

    Cruise Ship Port
Our cruise ship went to the port and we caught a shore excursion to the Agua Clara locks at the Panama Canal. When we returned, we walked around the port. The area outside the port looked somewhat like a war torn zone. You could clearly see this from the ship when we arrived. The port area had locals selling their arts and crafts, a few stores, and a restaurant. However, if you walk past those, around the corner to the left there is a Super 99 Store (think mini Wal-Mart) where you can get pretty much anything you forgot from home, or ran out of. We spent about an hour there looking at the toys, different foods and snacks and got some things to bring home. Take a tote bag if you go. We noticed that many crew members from the cruise ship visited the store also. As always in a foreign country, be aware of your surroundings. Stay close to the port and you will should be fine.
Dear KathrynH, we appreciate you taking the time to review your experience at our port. We are glad that you enjoyed your shopping at the supermarket. Have a good trip.

    Clean and New Port
Wow, after embarking our ship at the Fuerte Amador Cruise Terminal in Panama City, the Colon port is really nice. We disembarked our ship to do a tour of Colon and Panama City after transiting the Panama Canal the previous day. However, the port is clean and new, the surrounding Colon area is pretty rough. In fact our tour of Colon was just driving through Colon, no stopping and heading on the highway back to Panama City. There is really nothing to safely see in the city of Colon.
Dear SueM, we appreciate you taking the time to review your experience at our port. We will be glad to hear that your visit was pleasant. Have a good tr

    A really Tacky Port
Hopefully you have a private tour or a cruiseline tour arranged. Port area is rather run down. To get to the shopping stores you will have to run through the taxi drivers offering tours. They certainly will be pests. We needed to get some things at the Super99 at the port and have to say that is the best part of the port.

We took a cruise with the entire family from Miami making a trip stop in Colon (Panama). Taking into consideration that shipping company tour prices were too much expensive, we decided to book them with a local tour operator. So, I do recommend taking it with Tamara (+507.63242898), not only because they are very professional and friendly people, but also because we had the opportunity to visit impressive beaches with transparent water, we saw monkeys and we try local food. Amazing experience!

Docked here in January 2020 for a stop in Colon prior to transit of the Panama Canal. The cruise terminal was fine but has limited services. The area outside of the terminal itself leading into Colon is daunting.

Thank you very much for your comment. Inform you that we are building the colon2000dutyfree.com shopping center. This new shopping center will have colorful and modern facilities, will comprise more than 70 thousand square meters built, around 165 retail stores, as well as areas for recreation and local and international cuisine, and will open in October this year. Have a nice trip.

Dirty, run down, depressed, littered with trash, dog poop everywhere, broken sidewalks, …. In other words avoid this .

We came in on a cruise ship for the day and thought perhaps it would be a nice port but we were mistaken. There may be some nice areas of the city but this isn’t one of them.

There are two gauntlets of people trying to sell their tours that you have to go through. They can be quite aggressive

We stopped in this port while on a cruise with RCCL from Fort Lauderdale through the Panama Canal to San Diego. The port is small and there is really not much around it. We decided to walk into "town" and were not very far when a local stopped us and asked us where we were going. He advised us to go into the shopping district which was a good idea - I got the feeling we weren't heading to a nice area. I don't think people just walk around this town. The shopping district is a duty free area and full of shops selling anything and everything you can think of. We shopped until we couldn't walk any further. If you are not a shopper I really don't know what you would do at this port. The ship did offer tours but they were expensive and took all day. You are in port from 9am - 7pm as it takes hours to get to where ever you are going.

We did spend our last hours in a little bar located right at the port and enjoyed local beverages.

Colon 2000 the best Colon town has to offer. A supermarket car rental 2 casino's a few places to have a drink or a bite electronic shops. The highlights of the town. Only the coffee was real good at the coffee shop

Al the bad stories in mind about the town we took a walk through Colon. Yes it is a pile of old houses you don't want to live ,you not even wish your worst enemy to live there. We took a serious walk starting at colon 2000 to the Washington hotel on the other side of town, the we went back through the main street. There was nothing to get excited about the best looking building was a church and even the church was not worth mentioning. We never felt really unsafe but it was not a walk in the park because you always keep in mind the bad stories.

It is amazing a hour drive from Panama city you end up in a world so different from pc.

We took a taxi from our hotel Melia outside Colon and were charged 10 dollar, on the way back we took a taxi on the street who charged us 4 dollar.

A taxi to Gatun locks will set you back 8 dollar with a street taxi and arround 50 when arranged by your hotel.

As long as you act according the common sense rules you should be fine with a street taxi, the ones we used are eager to give you a good ride and bring you Colon safe at your destination

My advice if you don't need to be in Colon stay away you will miss nothing

Everyone - including the local taxi drivers (who are no doubt talking their book 0 but seem earnest in their warning) tells you not to walk anywhere here - so it does limit one's ability to comment except on the so called tax-free zone - or better still the Gatun Lock.

The Gatun Lock is about 20 minutes out of colon and has an observation deck close to the ships in comparison to the Miaflores Lock where most people go to see the canal. On the right day you can get personal attention from the guide and find out lots of things about how everything operates. Definitely worth the train trip to get here for this attraction.

As for the tax-free zone, you have to pay $US2 to get in and do the passport thing and they were intrigued as to why Australian's were there so far from home.

After a few minutes of walking around - we wondered why Australian's were there too. We are not good shoppers, but there was just lots of unknown brand Chinese junk and what did have a known brand was highly suspicious anyway. Don't bother.

I was warned not to venture out too far, like an idiot I did. It is not a great area. I would definitely stay close to the shops right at the port. I ventured out and it got real sketchy, real fast.

Honestly there isn't much to see here but shopping is ridiculously cheap. Even cheaper if you take a 5 minutes walk to the Freezone Shipping area, you can get everything you can think of at amazingly low prices.
