There is no visitor center at the Gatun Locks like there's one at the Miraflores Locks, but here you are closer to the ships and can see the construction of the new locks that theay are building right now.

Everyone learns about the Panama Canal in school. But, it's impossible to comprehend the size and scale of the system that raises and lowers large ships allowing them passage through the canal. We were fortunate enough to see a westbound and an eastbound shop passing during our visit. This is an experience not to be missed if the opportunity presents... More

If you are traveling in Panama, you must visit this amazing engineering feat. To see the three locks work, raising or lowering ships is something not to be missed. The observation platform is a great place for viewing with a close up view of how it works.

Visited Colon on cruise shore day on 17 Jan 2016. The Gatun Locks are only 15-20 minutes by taxi from the port. Cab fare 40 US$ for two. Five US$ p.p. for entry. Spent an hour watching two container ships traversing two of the three locks. Fascinating. There is a free commentary and extensive viewing platforms (can be busy when... More

The visitor centre at Gatun lock is a must see if you are in Panama. There is an observation platform where you get a close up view of ships going through the locks, and there are plenty of photo opportunities. It is steeped in history, and it is fascinating to see big boats raise some 85 feet between the three... More

Check the boat crossing schedule first before planning the trip. It is a 20 minute drive from the center of the city .

If you are going on a Panama Canal cruise, you don't need to book an excursion. Your cruise ship is your excursion! The people who left the ship in Gatun Lake for excursions missed going through the canal in daylight! We approached the first set of locks and proceeded through the canal before dawn. Everyone was wandering about the ship... More

Fascinating visit on cruise ship to see a engineering marvel from 100 years ago. Amazing that it takes 52 million gallons of water per lock. And it costs the cruise ship a quarter million dollars to go through. A good bucket list item.

The Canal de Panama Authority has built an observation center in proximity to the new Gatun lock expansion project. Absolutely fantastic to see and well worth the price for international visitors ($15). Bring your binoculars and camera. Cute gift shop also on site as well as a snack bar with water, etc for sale. You can see ships waiting to... More

Visited the visitor centre, where we watched a ship passing through the Gatun Locks, very interesting, certainly a feat of great engineering, not to be missed if you are in Colon. The centre was very busy but still managed to get good views and 'up close' to large ships.
