We loved the up the in the hill experience.
Indeed, it’s not a tour but a complete experience.
Javier explained in detail the history of the site, the permaculture project. He’s an expert and knows everything! He has a great sense of humour. He made us taste every plant, herb and fruit along the way.
Janet offered us a full tasting lunch with products all coming from the farm. We had a delicious coconut soup, tasty bananas, plantains , cacao, yucas, homemade candies made of curcuma and ginger and much more. She had also made the best chocolate brownie we had ever tasted! We left full and satisfied.
Janet also makes her own range of organic products.
We bought insect repellents (that actually work!!), anti scratching balms, face creams and after sun creams. They’re great quality products.
She offers many more, including oils and cacao balls.
Mind blowing experience, the best we had in Bocas Del Toro. If you’re around, this is a MUST. It’s worth every penny and even more!

Enjoyable, informative, wonderful experience! Highly recommend. Be prepared to hike up a hill to get there, but the hike is worth it. The owners are super knowledgeable and passionate about the amazing biodiversity they propagated along with Mother Nature. The food at the end is fantastic too!

My wife and I stayed in the Cabin for 3 nights during our trip to Panama at the end of Nov. There are so many amazing things I could write but I'll try to be brief.

The family is wonderful and willing to provide anything that you need to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. The cabin has the most beautiful view and sound of the far away waves is perfect for sleeping. No AC no problem! Every evening there was a great breeze keeping us cool for sleeping.

And, whatever you do...Have Javier make you pizza! My wife and I have had pizza in Chicago, New Haven, New York etc and his homemade pizza was world class!

We absolutely loved our stay and would recommend to anyone!

Stayed in the cabin for two nights with my wife and could not have been happier. The couple and family that runs and owns the place are among the friendliest people you will ever meet. And the views from the cabin are flat out amazing. If you want quiet isolation with some gorgeous scenery and don't mind basic accommodation, this is the place. Perfect for lounging in hammocks and reading and a beautiful beach is only an adventurous 30 minute hike away. They also serve up some great coffee too and of course the chocolate is excellent.

Javier and his wife have such a great place. We really enjoyed the tour with Javier - he has a lot of knowledge and is a cool guy. We learned a lot and the tasting after the tour was the perfect way to finish a great afternoon.

I can't stop thinking about Up in the Hill and the tour around the farm. I've just arrived home from traveling and when people ask me about my trip, it's the first thing I tell them about.

Everything surrounding the trip excursion was new, unique, and enjoyable. We hiked up from town, during heavy rain, which was entertaining since a few in our group were either in sandals or without a shirt (neither are recommended). When we finally arrived and started the tour, we were more properly geared up - they had a few extra rain boots to use.

Touring through the farm was incredible. Learning about the cacao process, the entire creation of the farm, and about the trees, plants, fruits, grasses...and every other thing they grow was amazing. We saw waterproof leaves, laurel trees that they harvest to build on the property, el diablo tree, which was so massive I thought it was a rock wall at first. It was all really stunning. Throughout the tour we tasted and smelled different plants. Then, at the end of the tour, we got a full tasting. INCREDIBLE. Dude! We tried each step of the cacao process (plant/dried/roasted/nibs/powder) and then had it as hot cocoa (with coconut milk) and an incredible brownie. We ate chaya (tree spinach), coconut strips, pineapple, and a bunch of other fruits I wish I could remember. I loved every second of it and am fascinated with how the owners have turned the land into such a beautiful place.

This tour is a MUST!

Great location. Janette and Javi leave you to enjoy the cabin as your own home but are on hand if you need anything. Rainforest around you - great bird and mammal life. Really enjoyed late afternoon walks to and fro Wizard beach. Latter is as attractive as the famous Red Frog beach but has far fewer visitors. Red frogs abound around Up in the Hill as well. We also saw an armadillo close up rooting around the forest floor for food. Very special!!! We sampled the delicious offerings of the cafe during the day but enjoyed walking down to Keecha's/ Roots in Old Bank for dinner. Just remember a torch!!!! Day trips are easily arranged through Javi - we had a great day out with Eddie on his boat Omar to Dolphin Bay, Coral Cay (snorkelling very good) Seeing sloths in the mangroves and winding up on Red Frog Beach. We explored Bocas town but very much preferred Bastimentos and our quiet base in Pantai Cabin. Although you could have breakfast in the cafe we preferred to buy ground Boquete coffee from Janette and some basic things like yogurt and oats from the shop in Old Bank that is open till 10pm and have breakfast in Pantai. No wifi unless you can use a Clara USB stick. If you have heavy bags Janette can arrange help up to/ down from Pantai if you let her know that you need it. Both her and Javi are really easy going friendly hosts. It's inspiring to experience what they have achieved at 'Up in the Hill'. The path up can be muddy. On our last day we found our trekking boots very useful as it had been raining overnight and for several hours that morning. Flip flops don't really work that well in that context!!! Finally valuables can be left for safe keeping with Janette/Javi. We stayed for 5 days and would happily have stayed longer. Thoroughly recommend.

5 days in one of their 2 cabins was the best of our month in Panama! The cabana was 5 stars, the surroundings and the brownies made it even a 6 star stay! Make sure that if you don't have the luxoury of staying in one of their cabanas, you do have breakfast (home made granola!!) or lunch.

For 5 days, we called this place home! The owners were our more then friendly neighbours, who brought us home made pizza and gnocci! When we visited our ' neighbours, they served us the best brownie and superfood-empanadas.

When you visit Up in the hill, take the cacao-tour. It gives you an inside view on the perma culture farm and teaches you how cacao is grown.

Someday, we will come back, to write a book or just to relax in the hammock enjoying the view of jungle and ocean!

Delicious banana bread, probably the best brownie I have had with delicious coffee served by charming Santiago and Maria on the verandah overlooking the peaceful garden of different trees, flowers, birds and butterflies. We also bought some of the organic products made there. It is definitely worth the walk - wear sneakers and bring a walking stick if it has been raining - through and above town with some beautiful views across town and out to sea. We were lucky to see a mother and baby sloth - pointed out by the equally charming little boy who lives up there. It was open on Sunday.
