    Good and Authentic Souq
According to locals this Souq is worth visiting on the weekends and starting around 6 am to see the most action. Everything from traditional daggers to cows can be traded here but it is a great spot to walk through especially if you're in the Nizwa area. Unlike the Mutrah Souq, we felt no pressure to buy anything here and could simply browse. Lots of nice pottery and souvenirs. There are some cafes, restaurants and ice cream shops nearby and it is a short walk from Nizwa Fort. Lots of parking was available in front of the meat and vegetable section but the roads behind the Souq are tight and winding so set your navigation to "Nizwa Souq Parking" if you plan to visit. The roads between Muscat and Nizwa are in great condition if you go around the mountains.

    Average Souk
My wife and I toured here on a Saturday evening. It was a fairly typical souk although it had more souvenir stores than I usually see. The highlight was a date store that gave away free samples. They were delicious. I would love to visit when they have one of their livestock sales (e.g. goats; cows). I was told that they occur on specific days in the morning.

Should have gone on a Friday - distinctly average
We had read the guide books and they all said get there Friday morning for one heck of a animal market and all the hustle and bustle of the souks. We didn’t, getting there in the afternoon and we wished we’d got there earlier as on the Saturday morning the Souq area was dead and reminded me of a wet weekend in Cleethorpes, with not a lot happening. The Souq area is modern in design and build and hence IMO loses charm. The meat souk in a building away from other individual souks which housed fish/vegetable/date etc. All in all a disappointment on a number of levels and nowhere near the experience of Muscat which is definitely worth a visit and is full of old world charm.

    Charming place
This was for me a new experience to witness the spirit and the soul of a marketplace such as this. It is quite a bustling place with lots of small shops with souvenirs and craft products. You can buy food products or handicrafts and take home as a lovely souvenir from Oman.

    Hassle free shopping
This is a fantastic souk, if you like browsing and buying without the haggling. Most items have prices marked and everyone is friendly and chilled with none of the pushiness of Mutrah Souk. An enjoyable experience before visiting the fort.

    Quaint, lovely souq
Lovely souq. Very chill. Not hassle-y whatsoever. Very friendly, welcoming locals/vendors. Quaint, narrow alleys/passageways. All kinds of items for sale: soaps, spices, perfumes, textiles, baskets... Highly recommend a visit if you're in Nizwa, whether you're looking to buy anything or just enjoy a bit of Omani culture.

    Too polished
After the Mutrah Souk disappointment, I was very much looking forward to Nizwa. I learned that it really comes to life on Fridays when livestock is traded, but unfortunately I was there on a Monday. I guess there are two parts : one with the typical small alleys & shops with touristy stuff, and the specialized market ones - dates, coffee, spices, etc. At least here in Nizwa the shops seem to be run by Omanis, rather than Indians, which has a more authentic feel. It gives you the confidence to buy your luban (frankincense) here. Especially the special markets are incredibly clean and well presented. Overall, the Souk is a great way of spending a pleasant couple of hours, even if you don't buy. They have lost a lot of appeal because they are so clinically renovated, just too polished.

During our Visit to Nizwa fort ,It turned out that the NS will be one of my favourite places in Oman and my top choice for shopping for souvenirs.I claim it.

Opening hours & best time to visit
Nizwa Souq is open for two trading sessions—except on Fridays, when the it is only open in the morning.
From Thursday to Saturday, things start off at 6am. The day trade winds up at 1pm when local people and residents break for lunch and prayer.
It gets going again at 4pm, and the souq stays closes at 10pm.

A dedicated and average 1.5 hours to spend around the souq
Daily items ,food stalls and restrooms nearby are available till late.Massive parking too.

It always feels authentic and genuine when you visit Nizwa Souq, specially on a Friday with all the vibrancy if the people involved in buying and selling stuff. You have to go very early to experience the best part of the souq because by around 9, everything finishes and it is only the touristy shops and the interior section of the souq which is still active.

Don't miss it when you are in Nizwa.

If visiting Nizwa Souq, do not forget to visit also the dates souq. You can taste different sorts of dates, you will get a cup of coffee. Very nice staff there, very patient as we were not sure what sort of dates to buy. Finally we mixed 5 different sorts, price for 500 kg=1,2 OMR only.
You can get there also dates syrup and many kinds of spices there. Do not miss this part of Nizwa Souq.

Arrive on a Friday before 7am to witness the buying and selling of the goats. In a deafening atmosphere of parades of goats, billy goats and kids you will see the brief negotiation that follows the touching of the muscles, the checking of the udders or genitals, the state of the teeth to evaluate the health of the animal and then the passing of money and leash. The animal first tugged by the seller will immediately be petted by the new buyer. Bible-like faces with hats differently positioned on immaculate tunics alternate with Western tourists and a few children or women. Don't miss it

We walked around the Nizwa souk after lunch. While it was getting hot, there was plenty to look at - from outdoor shops as well as shops inside selling artefacts made locally. There is plenty of scope for bargaining with the shopkeepers. Thy offer you dates along with cardamom flavored coffee as a gesture of their hospitality if you visit their shops. Would definitely recommend a visit if you are close to Nizwa. The interesting bits are clay pottery as well as ceramics which are available there.

The overall rating for this souk is let down by the everyday part but the Friday souk makes up for that. It is unmissable.
The Friday Souk gets underway early. Some of the traders have set up in the car park the night before. The weekly goat souk gets going around 6:00 am.
As well as the crowds of tourists, great throngs of local buyers were there to participate. There are people auctioning various items from antique firearms and weapons to date flowers and other produce. Bidding was frantic. Many locals appeared to be buying their full weeks worth of produce. The meat and fish souks were busy.
As to the "everyday" part of the souk, the souvenir and handcraft sections were very ho-hum. Much of the goods on sale appeared to manufactured in other parts of the world. Many of the stalls remained closed throughout the 4 days we were in Nizwa.
The fruit and produce section was very clean and polished.
The Date Souk appeared to be a massive tourist trap. Dates were able to be sampled here but best bought in the main fruit and produce section.
