Mountain top

Traveled along with friends in the four wheel drive, assume it is mandatory. Awesome view from the top of the mountain while claiming up .

Incredible to believe that this exists in the Arabian peninsula. Take a 4 x 4 though, it allows you to explore the whole area. Oman is one of those best kept secrets, if you are in the region you need to make the effort to go.

I would recommend to by the book Oman Off-Road which nicely illustrates all the possible routes in Oman when you have 4x4 car. I could even add that this is the only reasonable way to become familiar with these beautiful country. In couple of places they WILL NOT let you in if you do not have 4x4 car.

We had a limited time in the area and the day we went it was in the 50 degree (Celsius) temperature range so we did not do any real hikes in the area. We could see the trails and they looked amazing.

Its about 3.5hours drive from Muscat. Along the journey you will come across villages with beautiful landscapes and mountains. You can request to have a quick stop at Nizwa Souq to get some souvenirs and Nizwa Fort Tower for the history and unique architectural bits Once you are entering the Jebel Shams, some part of the journey you will experience some... Variously named as Grand Canyon of Arabia, Wadi Nakhur Gorge or Wadi Ghul Gorge, this is definitely a very impressive cleft in the Jebel Shams mountain (the "Sun Mountain", at 3009 m the highest peak in Oman), part of the Al Hajar Mountains range. We stayed at the Jebel Shams Mountain Resort, a few hundred meters from a good lookout... More

This is simply a must do when in this part of Oman! Startling switch backs and rough tracks take you to this beautiful, remote and quiet place. We were lucky enough to see Eagles soaring and Buzzards nesting against this most dramatic of back drops. Nothing to do other than gaze in awe and take some snaps!

Excellent place to escape for a day! Fabulous landscapes along the journey with amazing geology. A really special site to experience. Be prepared, take plenty food & drink, leave early, take warm clothing for cooler temperatures and surprise flooding and be patient if the roads flood. Superb lightning shows on our return journey! Well worth the hassle and thanks to... More

Not the easiest place to get to or to find your way around but it is spectacular. Viewing the canyon from the road is difficult as you can't look along the canyon. Also safety is not paramount here - there are some flimsy barriers but there are other sections where you could just walk out and fall straight down. If... More

Amazing view from the roof of Oman! There are no panels explaining the geology/history, but you can take in the view of the Wadi and hold tight to the railing!
