About
Bohemian Citizens’ Benevolent Society of Astoria The purposes of the Bohemian Citizens’ Benevolent Society of Astoria, Inc. are to encourage, support and maintain Schools, Dramatics, Lectures and Libraries for Czech and Slovak children and children of Czech and Slovak parentage: to maintain a social home for people of Czech and Slovak ancestry, in which the Czech and Slovak cultures may be taught and blended with American traditions and culture. The Society owns and manages the Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden. The Society consists of individuals of Czech and Slovak descent and their families who have pledged themselves to work for and promote the purposes for which the Society exists. In the late 1800’s many Czech and Slovaks emigrated from Austria-Hungary, and made their way to America. Many found a home in Astoria, Queens. In 1892, the Bohemian Citizens’ Benevolent Society was formed, named after the medieval Kingdom of Bohemia.

Like summer camp, with beer
Sep 2021
Different from what I remember, still a great place to kill 4 hours outdoors with a couple pitchers of beer.

Loud Music
Sep 2021 • Friends
If you like to talk to your friends on a nice Sunday afternoon don’t bother with the Bohemian Garden in Queens, NY. The music is so loud its obnoxious!

Very intelligent security guard

I forgot my ID and the security guy told me “no ID, 20 dollars”. We left immediately. It doesn’t look very legal.

REAL BEER GARDEN
Dec 2019
First, let me preface this review by saying I have never been to a Beer Garden and I do not drink beer. However, I had the opportunity to attend a family function at the Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden. It is a very warm and friendly tavern with a downstairs hall that probably seats about 100-150 people. There is also a bar downstairs if needed. The staff was very accommodating and the food was delicious. Our limited menu chosen specifically for the occasion was Hungarian goulash. potato latkes, and apple strudel. They also served a very tasty bread that I was unfamiliar with, but that was delicious. The actual outside garden was adorable and all decorated for Christmas. It was unfortunate that on the night of our party it was pouring rain and being in winter it was dark by the time we arrived. The staff lit everything up for us anyway. For beer drinkers, they served many different kinds of beer in large glass steins. I would recommend this place if you are ever in the area and just looking for a different and quaint atmosphere, or for an informal gathering with friends.

Best summer joint in NY
Jul 2019 • Friends
I came here to visit my family in Astoria and this is where they took me. We came at around 4pm and stayed til nightfall. The beers are reasonably priced and very very good. Plenty of outdoor seating and always a good live band playing. It’s the best part of summers in NY. This is one of my happy places.

Fun

Great beer garden with a large outside space with picnic tables, also an indoor bar. Sit outside on a nice afternoon and enjoy a couple of beers and a pretzel. We did.

Fun place
Aug 2019 • Friends
I had a pleasant evening visiting the Bohemian Beer Garden. Service was sketchy but the beer was good and reasonably priced ($18/pitcher). Had a brat and fries - the fries were great and the sausages (they give you two) were yummy but they were served with a single slice of white bread rather than a nice bun. And no pretzels?! But overall still a nice outdoor atmosphere and cool place to spend an evening. Plenty of German and I think maybe a couple of Czech beers on tap, though I could be wrong about that, I didn’t really study the beer list.

We didn’t realize there actually was table service until we had been there an hour or so (and had gotten beer from the bar ourselves), and our waitress wasn’t very attentive even after we figured it out. So that’s something they can work on.

Bohemian Hall is very easy to get to from Manhattan. We took the subway from midtown and were there in under 30 minutes. One of our friends took an Uber and it was over $45, so the $2.75 we spent on the subway was well worth it. Enjoy!

Good beer
Aug 2019 • Couples
Excellent selection of craft brews and a wonderful outdoor seating area. The food is also decent, but the beer is the star of this place. Great place to go with family and friends.

Good outdoor seating

Good outdoor seating and not overly crowded. A most pleasant spot to relax and have a grilled chicken sandwich.

Bad Food And Service!
May 2019 • Couples
To cut to the chase, the facts are this: the wait staff can't be bothered. One young lady spent her time leaning up against the counter at the far end of the garden, yawning, and only went to a table when someone told her to. The waiter that came over to our table told us to go to the grill and order our food ourselves, as every ticket that he was putting in was getting lost. So, that is what we did. We waited a good half hour for our food, while people who ordered the same items after us were served before us. When we did get out food, we sat down to eat overcooked sausages, with stale bread ($12.00 for two links), uncooked potato salad - that's right - the potatoes in the salad were still sixty percent raw, and very watery red cabbage. The place is a disaster! STAY AWAY!
