About
From meeting pelicans to viewing playful seals and, if luck permits, leaping dolphins and shy turtles - all this and more on our daily morning educational dolphin and seal cruises. We depart at 09h00 (check-in 08h30) every morning from our Jetty at the Walvis Bay Waterfront for a marine educational sightseeing tour in the bay area in search of the marine big 5: Whales, Dolphins, Mola, Leatherback turtle and seals. While serving hot coffee and tea, our initial route takes us past oyster farms to Pelican Point with its landmark lighthouse and 60,000 resident Cape Fur Seals. In season (July to November), larger mammals such as the Southern Right Whale and Humpback Whales are often spotted. Bottlenose, Heaviside and Dusky dolphins are regularly seen, as are Mola Molas and Leatherback Turtles. Our journey from Pelican Point takes us past some of the more interesting ships and oil rigs in the bay as we serve fresh oysters with sparkling wine, savoury snacks and desserts.

This is a fun cruise and a fantastic way to explore Walvis bay assisted by the superb explanations of the enthusiastic naturalist, Andreas who provided also insights on conservation efforts in Namibia. We travelled on Silversand, one of many catamarans operated by Namibian Charters. First surprise was the ability to see a Pelican close up as on several occasions they flew on board! Almost immediately a whale was spotted and a great experience even though due to the shallow bay it did not show off its fluke when diving. After another whale sighting, plus a number of seals playing around, headed across the bay to the huge seal colony before exiting the bay and poking our nose into ocean looking for dolphin , mola mola and wrights whales. but with no luck and ultimately aborted as the wind changed and a swell set in .
Whilst the huge bay is generally calm, ability to explore outside is very weather sensitive.
Hospitality throughout is great with tea, brandy and beer offered on the outward journey whilst champagne, oysters and a superb spread is offered on the return. On return Andreas pointed us in the right direction to see the flamingoes in an adjacent lagoon, a great way to end a superb trip.

Enjoyed this cruise out from Walvis Bay. Was picked up in Swakopmund in the morning and taken to the Bay. Enjoyed the morning cruising and enjoying the scenery. Saw many seals, pelicans and other birds. A morning tea of oysters, snacks and champagne was put out and was very enjoyable. Did not see any dolphins or whales which would have been nice. A ride back to the hotel was provided and a stop on the way back to see the flamingos was great. Would recommend this experience.

Before leaving the bay 'wild' seals jump on board the boat to be fed some dead fish from a bucket the crew take on board. I find this practice of feeding the seals to attract them to tourist boats ethically questionable. Ecotourism is about admiring the beauty of nature, not taming it.
One of the seals that jumped on board the boat was called Bobby. He had a fishing hook in his mouth. When one of the tourists asked if the crew couldn't help the seal by removing the hook the answer given was that it is a wild animal and the crew couldn't interfere (while they were feeding this 'wild' seal their fish). If they feed the animal, I feel they have a duty to look after the animal or at least call the relevant wildlife protection services to help the seal. I wish they would not feed the seals in the bay for tourist's amusement.
The rest of the tour was quite good - there was a whale, dolphins and seals that happily splashed in the water as we sailed on by. Even though it was a cold day it was great to get out on the water and see the animals in their natural habitat.
It was really unfortunate that a good cruise was marred by such irresponsible attitudes and behaviour.

We took the opportunity to sail around the area of Walvis Bay hunting for dolphins, whales and seals. Recommend taking warm clothes as very windy on deck however blankets are provided, as was coffee, sherry and champagne with the lunch. Knowledgeable retired skipper gave us a talk and described the sea life around the bay. Unfortunately no whales sighted but there were dolphins, rather tame seals who enjoyed being fed fish on deck and a couple of pelicans that kept landing on the boat. Great adventure.

The pelicans and sea lions arrived even before the cruise started and then joined us on the boat. The weather was perfect with no fog for the start of the cruise. In addition to the pelicans and sea lions, we saw two types of dolphins and humpback whales and flamingos. After the marine life viewing you are served a light meal of local foods and wine, all very tasty. The discussion of the wildlife was enjoyablelyeducational. The main viewing area consisted of the catamaran trampoline and benches which were open. Food was served in a covered area. A small, clean toilet was also on board.

We spent a very enjoyable morning aboard the beautiful catamaran.
Our guide was charming and very knowledgeable.
Lunch - oysters, other seafood and sparkling wine - was delicious and plentiful.
We truly wished the tour could have been longer!

The trip is really great with good friendly crew and a very comfortable large catamaran.
The 4 hour trip travels around the bay and shows all the good sights like oyster beds, seal colonies, birds and we saw Benguela Dolphins and Mola Mola.
My only comment would be that there is very little focus on the wonderful birdlife in the area, and possibly a bit more information on Birds for keen birders would be nice.
The food served on the trip home was good and all-round a very pleasant trip to get an overall perspective of the marine life in Walvis Bay.

The 3.5 hour Catamaran Trip is one to remember for a lifetime. My family and I were privileged to join professional and fun guide Joe and his team once again on a remarkable journey around the Walvis Bay Harbour. The atmosphere on these cruises is always fun filled and relaxed, the crew is down to earth and the fact that they love and respect the ocean and it's animals filters through all the time.
We were blessed to sail in perfect sunny weather and had the most remarkable sightings of a humpback whale (breaching!), three types of dolphins and a sunfish right next to the boat, not to mention the amazing visits from pelicans, seals and seagulls. It was a mind-blowing experience, thank you Catamaran Charters!

Hi - yes, absolutely, the excursions are geared for the ultimate enjoyment of kids. We may just request kids under 10 to wear a life vest, which is supplied by us.
