As a wildlife nerd anything new and endemic interests me. and the living desert tour from Chris delivers exactly that, as well as further insights on the desert flora.

although the weather at swakopmund was quite foggy, we were lucky enough that the sky gradually cleared and it seems like everything started to happen after that. we saw the namib desert gecko, skink, black hairy thick tailed scorpion, baby dwarf adder, and namaqua chameleon changing its color right before our eyes.

it is really not easy to spot these creatures if you dont know how to look for it. you probably have stepped past them most of the time as they are camouflaged or hidden underground. so Chris' experience is pretty valuable in helping us see all these critters.

When we were scheduled this trip by our safari company, I was a bit skeptical....no more. This was such a great experience and Chris Nel was entertaining, informative, and totally into the subject, we were all enthralled. Snakes, birds, spiders, lizards, chameleons, we covered all the little creatures of the desert and dunes. Thank you for such a great adventure...I would recommend it for all.

We had Chris Nel as our guide for the Living Desert Tour to search for the Little 5. He picked us up at the gate of our Guesthouse. We did heard some story's but we couldn't image what to really expect. Well, I can be really short about it. It was absolutely amazing and I really recommend Chris as your guide. Wow, wow and again: wow. Such a passionated man who knows a lot about the little animals living in the Desert. Before starting the tour he told us some rules and a very interesting introduction about how the desert system works and how the wildlife and plants are surviving on the little amount of water provided by rain and moisture. If you are in Swakopmund or when you are planning to travel through Swakopmund, please believe me and book this tour at Living Desert Adventures. It is absolutely worth it. A 10 out of 10!

Chris, when you are reading this, thank you very much for everything!
Greetings, Tim and Ilse from Holland!

We joined the tour in mid january and fortunately caught the low season!

If you love the desert, this tour is for you, because here you see the little bit more about the desert ypu’d miss if you go by yourself or on a (boring) squat tour.

If you don’t know anything about the desert other than that it’s hot, dry and there are camels (wrong) but you would like to visit the desert, then please, please, please join this tour! The desert is an ecosystem and you should know its weaknesses and how you can suistanable visit the desert - and this is what you will learn in this tour!

If you love animals, this is your tour! There are geckos (beautiful!), snakes, lizards, beetles, chamaeleon waiting for you in the desert & they are everywhere! If you’re scared of them, Chris (the guide) will respect that and will give you the chance to overcome your fears.

The tour was absolutely amazing, thank you Chris!

Sheer disappointment with Chris Nel who took my booking which we confirmed telephonically the day before and then phoned the hotel (not me) on the morning to say he had been overbooked, all whilst is was waiting outside the hotel for him to pick me up. My biggest disappointment in Swakopmund. My day was rescued by my hotel management who secured an alternate booking.

I would like to apologize to our client for the human error that took place. We take extra care to make sure all bookings run smoothly and that no mistakes occur. On this occasion the office made a error and I did try to contact the client directly, but the hotel could not locate the client immediately so I left a message. I find this negative review unnecessary as it is not a review of the tour, but a review of the mistake that was made with the booking. If you ever come to Swakopmund again then please contact me and join our tour free of charge as a token of our apology and in order to give us a chance of a fair review Regards Chris Nel

Having already seen elephants, rhino (black and white), lions, giraffes and even a caracal who would have thought one of the true highlights of our trip to Namibia would be watching Chris dig a Namib Dune Gecko out of the sand. A wonderful and amazingly beautiful creature

However, the true beauty of the excursion was how Chris and the other guides were able to show us so many creatures and explain the complex ecology of the desert in such a clear and interesting way

Do not miss this if you are in Swakopmund

We were picked up on time by Douglas. An Irishman who speaks very good German. Our group was manageable: three German couples.
The tour was unique, Douglas even more so. He also searched for a long time and then found a gecko, he wasn't successful with the snake, but that wasn't important to all of us.
Douglas is the nature conservation very important and also the preservation of the animal species, that was very positive noticeable. We have not regretted this tour in any way.

This was one of the additional tours we wanted to do and were not disappointed. The guides were very informative and quick to spot the signs of the little 5. We learned so much about Namibia and its unique geological details. Recommended.

We recently participated in the Living Desert Adventures tour, which we found to be an informative, educational and particularly enjoyable way to spend a few morning hours during our time in Swakopmund.

Our tour was reserved well in advance and included two vans with 8 passengers each and two guides. We were collected from our hotel and dropped off after the tour, which visited the nearby dunes and desert area of the Dorob National Park just a few minutes from the city centre of Swakopmund.

This tour was very well organised and time was maximised throughout. One guide provided a basic lecture on the dunes ecology, providing basis for the various insects, animals and plant-life found nearby while the other hunted around, searching for signs and tracks so that we could immediately see what lived in the area.

During our visit we were shown interesting insects, a famous spider, gecko, chameleon, legless lizard and desert hare which were all treated with respect and care. It is a challenging balance providing guests access to these creatures while minimising contact and disruption to their lives. We greatly appreciated the concern our guides showed for the well-being of all creatures we were exposed to.

As part of this desert experience, we were surprised at how beautiful the dunes were in this part of Namibia. Everyone raves about the reddish orange dunes of Sossusvlei but it must be said that the colourful dunes in this area of the Dorob NP are very impressive as well. Our guides described how minerals like magnetite provided much colour to the area sand at times. While in other places, large white coloured dunes were found as well.

At the end, we were surprised that over 4 hours had passed. There was never a dull moment in the Living Desert Adventures morning tour and we left very satisfied with our experience. This is a outdoor activity that we would place high priority on repeating during future visits to Swakopmund. The Living Desert Adventures team did a great job.

We, (2 adults and one 4 year old), recently went on this tour in Swakopmund, Namibia. Our guide, Chris Nel was excellent and very knowledgeable. Having traveled extensively through Africa and around the world I would have to rate this as one of the best tours I have been on for interest, detail and enthusiasm. I would highly recommend this tour as a must-do for anyone visiting Namibia. It’s amazing how much life you find in a sand dune!
