The original Living Desert/Little 5 Tour! 08h00 to 13h00 from Swakopmund in our 4x4's: we go into the dune/gravel plains area to track the little creatures - snakes, chameleons, geckoes, lizards, scorpions, insects, etc - and also give info on the desert in general, the area's plants and minerals. Dune drive through to the sea. Scenic and educational.

Please tell me who can keep two 10 year olds and a 13 year old absolutely captivated for more than four and a half hours in a dessert, well Chantal can that's who. We were not sure what to expect and the kids were not too excited but oh my word, what an amazing afternoon. I could have easily repeated it, Chantal is just the most informative, passionate, excitable, funny incredible guide you will ever come across. This activity is not to be missed no matter what. We were sorry when it ended at 19H00 that evening and the kids are still talking about it. I highly recommend that you book through Tommyls Living Desert Tours and if possible ask for Chantal.

Our guide Chantelle was very passionate and patiently showed us the wildlife. Because of her amazing eyes we were able to see many of the little five. She showed the animals to everyone and her great relationship with them was obvious. Due to her cool tricks the photographers were able to take beautiful pictures. We had a lovely experience!

This is a must-do in Swakopmund which we warmly recommend to anyone, especially with Chantalle as guide! She found amazing animals for us to see but more than that it was her passion and happy spirit that made it such a memorable experience for all of us, young and old. We learned so much and she really changed our attitudes and minds for the better regarding the richness and fragility of nature. We had a great time with lots of laughs and extremely interesting insights that passed by way too fast. Thank you so much Chantalle and all the best to you, Potshot and all the other lucky chameleons under your care.

We did the half day desert tour. There were mostly women in the group. We were all appalled by the constant sexist jokes about women, even a couple of stereotypical blonde ones thrown in. I thought I was listening to Benny Hill in 1960. Just not acceptable. Several of us were ready to leave after half an hour. We finally asked him to stop and were told to just relax. Really? He stopped doing it but then told a shocking racist joke which doesn't bear repeating. Couldnt quite believe it. His constant yacking was boring and not at all funny. We complained to the manager who responded that he had no problem with women...completely missing the point. There have been similar complaints on trip advisor for several years so clearly he doesn't care what his clients think. If you think mocking women and black people is funny, this is the trip for you.

Hi Stephen Thank you again for your feedback! Again, apologies that you found the experience so unpleasant. In Tommy's defence he is a people-person and certainly does not mean offence; he just loves to make people laugh. Obviously he is doing it the wrong way. He is not sexist and he is not a racist, and the majority of people enjoy the tour, as you will see by the majority of positive reviews, and countless guests come back and ask to be with Tommy specifically 3, 4 , 5 times. I will again draw his attention, but he has mentioned he will be making changes.

Swakopmund is a very pretty town that offers the possibility of various activities, from kayaking to parachute jumps. For those who spend one or more days there, there is one activity that I would particularly recommend, perhaps not as adrenaline-pumping as others but which can offer equally strong emotions, although of a different kind: Tommy's Living Desert Tour.
With Swiss punctuality, we were picked up by Duan at our hotel and, in a relatively small group, set off in search of the small desert animals. The guide's ability to identify the presence of different animals from the slightest (for me invisible) signs in the sand was simply amazing; in the almost five hours that the tour lasted, we saw practically everything we could see.
However, the best thing about this experience was not so much seeing the animals (although I have to admit that the Palmato Gecko is one of the cutest animals I have seen in my life) or enjoying the fantastic scenery in the middle of the desert dunes, as it was experiencing at first hand Duan's passion for what he does and his awareness and sensitivity towards the environment.
We can't thank him enough for this little adventure, which was unexpectedly one of the highlights of our Namibian holiday.

What an absolutely incredible and soul-enriching experience. From pickup with Andrew, to drop off, we were enthralled with the views, the life and the knowledge that we were treated to. Chantelle Bosch brought the desert to life, and we were only too happy to partake. Thank you for keeping my son’s passion and interest in nature alive.

The tour was amazing. I didn’t really know what to expect but Chantelle found the most little tracks and could tell us everything about the little five (and more). Loved with how much respect she handled these little guys and also the environment. They do everything to keep this beautiful place clean and protect the animals. Can recommend 100%!

The tour allow you to discover several type of smalls animals of the desert, with the explanations of the guide. Even if it 's interesting some parts are too long and we have to wait in the car while the guide is searching some tracks. The price is also expensive in comparison with other type of activities.

Thanks for your review! We are glad that you enjoyed the tour. Unfortunately the animals are wild and needs to be tracked and this can sometimes take some time, but since you come on this tour to discover and learn more about the little animals of the desert our guides will do their utmost best to try and track animals to show to you even if it means you have to wait a little while. This is all part of the fun trying to spot animals in the wild. :-)

Absolutely brilliant look into life in the desert. Chantelle Bosch was a fantastic guide who showed us some of the small creatures that inhabit the inhospitable dunes of the desert. Her affinity with the animals is incredible and she clearly feels a great love for the area. She explained that just by stepping in the wrong place, how much damage can be done to those small creatures that live under the sand. She also tidies up as she goes along and collects the trash that other people carelessly discard. We had such a good time on the Living Desert Tour, we booked her again for the next day to go birding in Walvis Bay which was a great experience and I learned so much from her.

Thanks to Chantellé for a truly fantastic half day in the desert. We never experienced such a skilled and engaged guide talking about the desert and the “small five”. She really respects and wants the best for Palmato gecko , the chameleon, the snakes etc. - we got the impression that Chantellé speaks the language of the desert animals. A must when in Swakopmund
