We were collected from our hotel in KK and it was quite a long drive to Weston - about 2 hours with one toilet/food stop on the way. The roads are not great - very bumpy. We had some afternoon tea once we arrived which was very local food - loved this. Then we boarded a boat and headed out to see the monkeys. We saw a few different types in monkeys including the probiscus monkey. Some up close others were harder to see. After watching the sunset over the river we headed back to the base restaurant where dinner was served. The meal was simple and lovely.

After dinner we hopped back on the boat to see the fireflies. They were nice - lit up the trees like Christmas lights. I was later told that July is a better time to see them. But we were happy with what we saw.

Went to Weston Wetland Park chiefly to see the Proboscis Monkeys and the Fire Flies, which in fact were really great, but as the monkeys are wild in their natural habitat weren't that easy to get close to, very unlike a zoo Still, armed with a good camera and telephoto lens had a great time getting pictures of the unfortunate looking monkeys, although some people think they're cute. After a meal break to allow the sun to set we again took off in a boat to look at the fireflies. Wow what a show, fantastic to the naked eye but unfortunately not to a camera. Had no luck at all getting good pictures. The sunset? ... well either we were very lucky or its normal, I don't know but whatever it was it was absolutely FANTASTIC!!!

There were 3 choices that we were selecting for the firefly/probiscis monkey tour; Weston, Klias and Kawa. Weston was the farthest in location from KK but based on some reviews that we read, Weston was the 'least' touristy. Overall, i think we made a good choice. We were lucky because the weather was perfect; watching those monkeys in the wild was awesome to watch. Watching those fireflies at night in Weston was the best firefly show i've watched in my life. They were in different trees sparkling like Christmas trees.

Afternoon tea, check!
Proboscis monkeys seeing, check!
Dinner, check!
Fireflies, check!
Multilinguist guides, check!
Bright stars above you, additional experience!
Transportation to and from your hotel/hostel, check!
But the journey was long, about two hours and more if the traffic wasn’t smooth. Travelling was already tiring, but I do recommend going on this tour if you are a nature lover who’d love to see rare monkey species and fireflies. Also suitable for passionate photographers who are interested in sunsets, animals, sceneries.
Food served are all Halal.

I spent the first few days of the new year in KK and unfortunately the weather wasn't the best. Nevertheless, we decided to drive from KK to Weston and it proved to be a good decision. By late afternoon the weather was perfect even if a little cool. However, the monkeys happen to like cooler weather. We were welcomed by very hospitable hosts who treated us to some snacks and coffee before taking us on the river. We spent more than an hour on the river when trying to get a glimpse of the monkeys nearby through binoculars. The boat driver and the guide were both really nice and knowledgeable. They took us to several spots where we could spy on the monkeys. After dinner they took us back on the river to see the fireflies as well. All in all, it was a great experience and I can only recommend the place.

The weather was nice when we visited. We're so lucky that we saw around 10 proboscis monkeys, 1 silver leaf langur, numerous long tail macaques and fireflies during the boat trip. Be sure that you've a telescope with you to observe the monkeys.

Our trip was in November of 2017. It was a bit off season so there were not as much tourists had we went there in summer. The trip started with a river cruise. At first you'd say that the river looks yucky because it colored brown but once the guide explained it, it wasn't bad at all. It was actually clean. It was raining a bit when we were there so it was an added fun. We got to see rainbow as the sun is going down. Amazing view. There were a lot of monkeys, some were a bit far, but the guide was kind enough to show us where to look and he even took pictures. The guide was Filipino and a resident of KK so that's an added plus. There's are restaurants by the river and we had our tea break there (they offer local delicacies) and our dinner before watching the fireflies. Despite the rain, there were still fireflies. It's hard to take pictures of fireflies with just our cellphone cameras so we just have to rely on our memories to remember the experience. If it's your first time in KK, this is definitely a must-do. You'll love it and this is probably the cheapest tour package. Tour starts at around 11 am and you return to your hotel just about dinnertime.

We drove 2 the hours from Kota Kinabalu south to Weston (via Beaufort).

The trip is 120kms and the road is quite good. As you get closer to Weston you might find it useful to turn on your GPS (Google Maps or Ways) to avoid making wrong turns.

Weston is a small village without modern conveniences eg no ATM's. The nearest resemblance of 'civilization' is Beaufort, which is 30 mins drive north of Weston. Even at the 7-Eleven in Beaufort we could not use a credit card.

Weston's economy is built upon tour groups, mostly Chinese tour groups. There were over a dozen buses parked in the main town. Weston Wildlife Park (WWP) is located up a small side road about 2 kms from the main kampung (village).

We arrived WWP at 4.15pm as they have hi-tea from 4-5pm. There is a package for RM70 per person that includes the hi-tea, a River boat trip, and dinner.

Unfortunately they don't take credit cards. This was our last day in Sabah so I was running low on currency and with 3 of us we did not have RM210 in cash. The nearest ATM is Beaufort, so a long trip back and forth. In summary we did not take the package and did not take the River Safari. It was my fault as I knew this was a remote area but mobile wifi works well here and they could easily install merchant facilities for credit cards.

The whole town of Weston is run down and an environmental disaster. As you walk around the jetty at Weston Wildlife Park there is rubbish in the wetlands and around the jetty ... everywhere. The local people and tour groups obviously dont care about the environment and there is no such thing as customer service for tourists. They just want cash and not willing to take care of their Park. Sad. I've lived in Asia more 10 years and this is a common theme.

The river itself was very muddy and not pretty at the time we visited. Perhaps due to heavy rain? The river boat is a small fibreglass boat with an outboard motor that takes around 10-15 people. Don't expect anything flashy.

We saw many monkeys, so our 7 year old was very excited. Of course, disappointed that we did not get to take the river trip.

In contrast, I have been to the rehabilitation park for Orangutan's in east Sabah which is beautifully managed.

Set low expectations, and take cash!

Had lots of fun at this place. Arrived around 4.30pm by car, driven all the way from Kota Kinabalu. Took me close to 2 hours to arrive. Journey to location is not on express highway, so please allocate more time for any eventualities.

Upon arrival, they offered us light refreshment. We waited for about 30 mins before the next group arrived. We started out boat ride around 5.30pm and we went to a number of locations to see the proboscis monkeys. They are hard to spot as they always hide between tree branches. We do see some of them but it will be good if you have the long range photography lenses or binoculars, of which the latter you can rent one if you need to.

After an hour or so, we are glazing at the beautiful sun set. The whether was great. We went back to the jetty area to have our dinner and after 45 mins or so, we were on another boat ride to see the fireflies. With the surrounding pitch dark, it's easy to spot thousand of these tiny insects above the mangrove trees. It's a beautiful experience and a rare sight. No flash photography is allowed though. The boat ride was over at 8.20pm

We departed from the place around 8.30pm. It was a great experience. The boat tour guide by the name of Mr Ritchie was so kind and has the patience to explore the various spots with us.

We book a tour to spot the probiscus monkeys and saw three types of monkeys, silver tail and makaw. Thereafter, we saw thousands of fire flies that glitters in the trees like lights on a Christmas trees. This is such an awesome sight. The scenery along the river pre and post sunset was also surreal.
