We went for the Kiulu river (Grade I-II) white water rafting, had a really good experience even though all of us were first time rafters. The guide Jeff and Lilo were very friendly and professional, the ride itself was quite relaxed for the most part as we ride with the river flow while rafting through a few rapids.

Lunch was included in the package, and it was cooked fresh at the beautiful Riverbug base camp at the end of the river. It was simple but delicious, and vegetarian options were available as well. Shower facilities available at the base camp.

Upon request, they have van transfer service available to and fro your place of stay and the rafting location (subjected to availability). You can drive yourself there as well, but the road condition is similar if not worse than the road to Kundasang.

Besides rafting, other activities such as camping, small flying fox across the river and back, etc are also available at the base camp, though we did not participate in them.

I called Riverbug directly, and they charged only MR170 per person, inclusive of a bus ride to the site, insurance, guide, equipment, rafting, and a BBQ lunch. Kiulu is graded as a Class I/II river.

We were picked up from Le Meridien at 9am and reached the riverbank about 90 minutes later. We were given careful instructions by an English speaking guide on how to use the paddle, maintain balance on the raft, and the proper wearing of the helmet and the life jackets. The river was running fairly high, so they decided to give us the full 15 km ride.

I was nervous when we began, but Adam, our guide, maintained fine sense of humor and kept us going. Four of us on the raft were in our 50's and 60's and only the guide and one other person may have been in their 20's or 30's. We kept the raft from overturning, and three of us even got into the water and flotaed freely down the river for more than a km. I saw one child around 4 years in one raft, and two rafts were manned only by the parents and two children, and the guide.

I highly recommend this trip. This is the one we enjoyed the most.

I've been on many river trips in the US and never have I been so well taken care of as I was with the fellows from Riverbug. I booked an individual trip on the Padas river in Borneo. The short story is that I injured myself (totally my fault) while on the rafting trip. They took such good care of me; often carrying me because I wasn't able to walk. Billy, the lead guide and Jasmin never left my side. They stayed with me the entire train ride and drive to the closest clinic. They took me to my hotel room to retrieve my passport and drove me to the emergency room where they stayed with me for five hours! Riverbug did not hesitate to pay their portion of the hospital visit - always a good idea to get the trip insurance - which I did. Billy and Jasmin were so devoted, they brought me back the next day (with my two friends) to get my cast and even drove us to the airport the following day. Billy said he had been working for the company for ten years and has never had to take someone to the hospital. I absolutely believe him; they were professional and efficient the whole time and I am being completely earnest when I say that I would recommend this company to anyone and I was a woman on the trip solo. Even with the injury, the trip was spectacular and fun and the best story ever: "how did you injure your leg?"......"I was white water rafting in Borneo." I have told this story many times over and always emphasize how lucky I was to have had the crew (Billy and Jasmin) as my guides. I encourage everyone/anyone to book your river trip with Riverbug and please tell Billy and Jasmin that Ms. Karina says "hi!"

The rafting was Great the chief sailor Ian( doubt it was his real name he was rather asian) sailed us down a Ganting stream no more than 30 cm deep. On the 20 minute journey we were thrown in the water which seemed like attempted murder by Ian .. HN. Ian was not a lad and pretty sure he was illegally in the country so i threatend him with deportation which he didnt understand be cause he is brown out his nut.

To further enhance the hinginess of the activity we payed 160RM for photos which when we tried to view them on the computer were not there .. so mouldy it unbelievable . After phoning and emailing them they told us we have been scammed and will not refund us... Heavy lally.

Do not go to river bugs they are scaffy theifs
. If you want a similar experience go to the dodgiest part of town and try and get robbed as this may slightly better than the experience i had.

Well as far as entertainment goes I give it 5, but as far as a true history goes it is lacking. It tends to be a bit of a production line. The worst thing we did was a museum tour the day before and learnt a lot about the history and culture, if you want an accurate history I would do a Museum visit, if you take the trip take it with a grain of salt.

Complaint on Sabah, Riverbug. They told us a few pcs of photo (burn into CD) will sell at RM100 to a team (exclude the rest of the team on that day) and warned us no camera prohibited. If visitors want to take their personal gadgets it is under their own risk, Sabah Riverbug do not have the rights to block us. Would like to share my experience with Perak Riverbug where I did rafting at Gopeng last year September. It was the professionalisme (of tour guide and his team) and top quality service given by Gopeng Riverbug which makes me to recommend Sabah Riverbug to my friends to do rafting at Padas River. The rafting I had at Padas river is very dull and it should be a level 1 instead of level 3/4 claimed by Sabah Riverbug. Our certificate stated level 3/4. I am glad that the safety procedure were clearly demonstrated by Sabah Riverbug.
Would like to question Riverbug honor. Sabah team told us there will be no photo be upload into main riverbug website. But Gopeng team told me they will upload photos into website within 3 weeks. I did downloaded the Gopeng pictures from the website. I feel "con" by Sabah team. There were HongKies, Germanese and etc with us that day. This create a bad image for Malaysia tourism.

It was our first time river-rafting so we were pretty disappointed when our guide told us the water levels were low that day. The rafting was to go on anyway but we knew it wouldn't be as great and were wondering why we weren't told earlier so we could've postponed or cancelled the outing.

We were wrong! It was great fun nevertheless - we fell out of the raft in some stretches, had to jump out in others and 'unstick' the raft from rocks, stopped for dips in some calm places along the river, all with the river bug guides livening things up through-out with their antics!

Great fun all the way and highly recommended.

Highlights-
- River rafting is great, particularly for first-timers, do it! Pros have higher-grade options than the one we went to
- The guides are friendly and fun. We experienced good, warm service throughout
- Shower facilities available at the end of the trip (don't go expecting warm water though!)
- Lunch at the end was a basic, though good spread. But after a trip on the river it tasted awesome! Rice, noodles, chicken, lamb, fruit - enough to put back all the calories you lost and more.

Here are some tips -
- Call Riverbug direct to save a few bucks, you'll still get full service with the pick-up/drop off, lunch etc
- The trip from KK to the river is short, but if you tend to get car-sick be prepared, there are quite a few tight, winding turns along the way
- If you're a pro or a beginner who wants the 'full' experience, check ahead on how high the river is running before booking
- Obviously carry a change of clothes along, you can take cameras along but not on the raft so they're not much good
- Riverbug will sell you snaps at the end, they have several options - we picked up a montage of 4 snaps, definitely priced higher than normal but not exorbitant

The trip started at 5.10am. Back to our hotel at 6pm . its interesting as we need to take bus and then train there (but its suffering as there is no air con on the train) The actual action is actually only about 1.5 hour ride (10km) . We took the Padas River which is rated 3 and 4 .

Good part
Well. . . the guide is very friendly, Cheerful and happy go lucky type.
New experience if you did not try . But its a bit wasteful of the time consumed

Bad part
1. The cert is upon request . They do not give if we do not ask.
2. The river is not so exciting as mention. Maybe there is no downpour .
3. This is an exciting game , but the guide keep moving the boat away from the dangerous part . Thats boring ...
4. They do not let us bring along our camera/Hp. Hence , we need to buy from them which is RM 100 for all the digital photo . Its expensive , right ? And they should have shot more photo .

The river bug guide pick up us from the hotel at 5:40am, it took about 1 and a half hour bus journey to a town call Beaufort. Then from there we have to ride the oldest train in Borneo for about another 1.5hr to reach the starting point.

After put on all the gear, riverbug guide give us a saftly briefing and group us into small group of 4 or 8 in a raft. it took us about 1.5hr - 2hrs which includes about 8 points of rapids. that is really fun, we also do body rafting when there are calm water...

after rafting, we have simple buffer lunch and headed back to beaufort town by train and the bus drop us at our hotel around 5:30pm, is a long journey but worth the ride...

We pay RM200/ person for return transfer, rarting equipment, english speaking guide, lunch, insurance and certificate. If you go in a big group, i guess i can get cheaper than this price.
