Penang Bird Park is in Butterworth. It is suppose to be one of the biggest bird park attractions in Malaysia with a variety of bird species and plants. But i consider it a budget bird park.

The park is filled with a wide range of birds, especially those found locally in Malaysia. Some storks roam freely. There are some deers (including sang kancil), crocodiles and rabbits. All these animals are lively and seemed well cared for. The surroundings are spacious and shady for one to take a rest. Spent the morning hours observing and admiring these creatures and felt it was really worth it. The half-hour bird-show was informative, especially to the children who were present. The toilets are clean. However, i think due to funding constraint, the place is rather basic and old.

Penang Bird Park was to be the highlight of our day trip around Penang Island and Butterworth. What a disappointment!! For the most part the animals kept here look healthy but the aviaries and pens need a major overhaul. There has been some attempt at repainting but it the park needs major structural work immediately if it is to survive. I can't believe a major attraction like this has been let deteriorate to this state of disrepair. Why doesn't Tourism Malaysia step in and help these people out? There is no reason why It couldn't be returned to its former glory.

Small but fun place to visit. Wouldn’t say it’s perfectly maintained but can see they tried their best on a small budget. Surprisingly lots of parrots, owls, hornbills and peacocks, more than I anticipated. I would recommend spending 2-3 hours here, including watch a half an hour bird show around 11.30 a.m, kids will love it! Photo session with the birds after show is free of charge too!
Another highlight are the three free flight aviaries, where you have small birds flying and walking around you. With RM1 you can buy some seeds and the birds will stop on your hand to eat them. Flamingoes and pelicans are great to watch too! Also look for special animals like snakes, crocodiles, ostrich and emu..
The place can be easily navigated even without a map, just make sure you bring mosquito repellent to avoid being attacked by mosquitoes!

We visited Penang Bird Park on our way from Georgetown to Kuala Lumpur after reading the positive reviews online about the facilities. However, on arrival we were very disappointed with the state of some of the birds. When we were walking through the park, we noticed that several of the birds were pulling their own feathers out, presumably as a result of boredom and mental stress. Other birds had broken tail feathers and broken wing feathers. The enclosures were small and did not include any toys or even live foliage for many of the animals. Parrots are highly social and intelligent animals who need toys and activities to keep them occupied whilst in captivity, or they will become ill. We also noticed the flamingos are in a small enclosure, not a wide open space that is recommended, and their plumage is very pale, indicating they are missing the nutrients in their diet needed to maintain their correct color. Aside from the state of the birds themselves and their cages, whilst walking through the park we saw quite a bit of construction materials as well as rubbish. We were very saddened by the state of these animals, their cages and the general environment. I would NOT recommend this bird park as a family activity.

This was the saddest place I have been. We felt ashamed to have paid money to see birds being tortured in tiny cages, with feathers falling out and looking underweight. The birds looked seriously ill and distressed, this place needs to be shut down.

So very sad to see so many birds in really small cages and no toys to stimulate them. Some seemed distressed and had over pecked their feathers leaving them with bald areas. A couple of the owls were rocking themselves and seemed really lethargic. The whole place needs a revamp cleaned and new bigger areas for the birds. The rabbits seemed to be on a small island on a pond with no way to get back onto the land. Most distressing were two eagles that sat making a really loud noise and looking unhealthy. The poor
Ostrich seemed to be alive with Crawley things. This is over priced and if you have any compassion for wildlife it's pretty distressing. Do the birds and yourself a favour and DON'T visit.

Terrible attraction was not worth the money to get in, birdcages have seen better days and they all looked dirty and run down definitely not worth visiting.

We found the Penang Bird Park to be disappointing and quite dirty. Many of the birds have nasty eye injuries and just look miserable. Stay away from the toilets they are frightening! The ponds with the big fish are filthy and you couldnt see a thing, the big birds were almost featherless, poor things. In a nutshell, just dont waste your money.

I visited the Penang Bird Park last week while on holiday. I was totally shocked and horrified to see how old, filthy and rundown the place was. The birds are kept in old rusting cages, the foot paths are all cracked, there is rubbish lying around everywhere. The water for the aquatic birds was filthy, murky, and covered in overgrowth. The large parrots and eagles displayed in smaller cages had blank vacant looks in their eyes as a result of lack of stimulation and human interaction. It is a considerable charge for entrance to the park- approximately NZ$30 and there were a number of tourists there but it is obvious that none of the profit goes back into the maintenance of the park. It is privately owned and operated. I was very upset as was the group I was with to see such a neglected tourist attraction involving live birds. I spoke to the manager , who was a well dressed local man and expressed my feelings. He was quite unconcerned and said the recent flood had caused some damage to the park, which is utterly an pathetic excuse! I showed him pictures of the sad state of the park and said I would share my views on Trip Advisor. I think the Malaysian tourist authorities should intervene and close the park till it is rebuilt according to modern standards by injecting some of the huge profits into this. The bird show was a waste of time, the lady gave no useful information and the small number of birds in the show refused to do what they were supposedly trained to do. Please do NOT support this cruel and neglected bird park!!!

to be honest I would not bother with it as it was overpriced with little there, and the birds were kept in terrible conditions
