Found this market place when out walking one morning.
It was very busy and down one end of it many people were having breakfast in a food court area.
There are many shops there selling nearly every type of food and clothes you would want , gift and souvenirs shops a plenty.
Good atmosphere, we bought some bananas and delicious plums there.
Opens early but I think it closes midday

A Must Visit to the Iconic Icon of Penang The Chowrasta Market for either local souvenirs or even local food stalls surrounding area which has been there for more than easily 50 years or so... Located in the Heart of Georgetown, a merely 2 mins walking distance to Komtar the Tallest Landmark in Penang which glows at night to symbolise the Harmony of Penangites and also
to attract Tourist both locally and from afar, as per se.

Hawker food of every kind, inclusive of market produce, and an endless variety of great bargains on clothings, shoes, knick-knacks not to mention the inevitably infectious spirit of friendly and communal banter livening the atmosphere all round.

Bought some homemade sambal from the market which taste so good! Gonna restock when we come back Penang again. Other than the sambal is good, the dried meat from Tuck Kee is good too. They grilled it with charcoal, slightly burnt's dried meat taste is so good! We got the freshly grilled one, just cant stop eating haha.

Local market is like a local culture identity to observe and experience the local lifestyle. Chowrasta market is surrounded by many traditional shops from eateries, groceries, to garments while the inside has butchery, seafood, vege and fruits. If you are visiting during the local cultural celebration, you get to taste the local homemade food like the miniature mooncake with traditional and creative unique flavours. I just like their mint flavour.

Have heard a lot about the second hand book stores in Chowrasta Market, and finally managed to get there. The bookshops are upstairs on the first floor, which is undergoing renovation - in fact, the whole place was a bit of a mess because of renovation work.
The book stores are actually small cubicles filled with ....books! Not all the books are old or second hand - there were quite a lot which look new, tho' the sellers will tell you they are second hand. These are being sold at around RM 20 - half price from the marked prices, so I guess that makes them a little cheaper than normal. But I would rather wait till the big book warehouse sales to get 'new' books at far cheaper prices.
However, if you have the patience to trawl thru' the other books on the shelves, you can find many really old books, which they are selling at less than RM10 - can get some real gems there. I managed to find some of the Chalet School series for my daughter, something I haven't been able to find before this. My husband managed to dig up some old war books as well. There was this one bookseller who owned three or four stalls -and he kept dragging us from one to the other, showing us what he sort of realized we were looking for! You will end up really dusty after going thru' all the shelves!
Downstairs, there are a whole bunch of stalls selling Penang tidbits - from nutmeg to pickles to various biscuits to rojak sauce and dried fish. .
There were also some stalls with tshirts and batik kaftans and caps and stuff like that

So you can do all your shopping in one place, and not have to go far from one shop to another!
