- S KSingapore, Singapore481 contributionsWe arrived just before 3.30 pm and was advised the guided tour is sold out. Not wanting to wait till 4.30 pm for the audio tour, we took the option of a high tea for 2 there. The high tea was good and allowed us the option of exploring the beautiful interiors of the Blue Mansion at our own pace. The hotel section was out of bounds. Relative to the Peranakan Mansion which is a lot bigger and visually more captivating, the same entrance fee ( with guided tour) at 25 myr per pax appeared high here. The high tea is reasonable at 88 myr for 2 pax ( Mon-Thurs) .Dear Sherwyn K, Thank you for your feedback! We’re glad you enjoyed the high tea and found it a pleasant alternative to the guided tour. It’s great to hear that you appreciated the opportunity to explore the beautiful interiors of The Blue Mansion at your own pace. We understand your comparison to the Peranakan Mansion and appreciate your insight. Your comments are valuable as we continually strive to improve our offerings. We hope you had a wonderful time and look forward to welcoming you back in the future.Written September 9, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 1, 2024
- Helen Ng4 contributionsThis was my 2nd visit to the Blue Mansion after 20 years. The property is well maintained, organized and managed. The ticket fee is 25 myr. The most unforgettable experience of this visit was its staff, Selva. I approached Selva with a simple enquiry. To my surprise, he gave me a full story of the Blue Mansion, more than what I expected. He is articulate, possesses in-depth knowledge, cheerful and helpful. I felt his passion and his pride in his work. He was able to answer all of my detailed questions such as how QI in Feng Shui was implemented in the design of the mansion, I sincerely appreciate him taking the time and effort to explain to me about the history and interesting stories of the Blue Mansion I'd also suggest to have lunch at the Indigo fine dining restaurant located in the first floor of the mansion. After lunch, you could visit the premise without paying the ticket fee. We went there this early March, the 3 course lunch set was at a great bargain price of 95myr per person. There's also a bar and a gift store on the ground floor. Unlike before, tourists now are not allowed to step into the hotel room area. If I'd have known beforehand about this arrangement, I would highly likely stay at the Blue Mansion Heritage Hotel.Visited February 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 26, 2024
- Eddie W6 contributionsExcellent and very informative tour. Thoroughly enjoyed our hour long guided tour through the Blue Mansion. You’ll hear all about the owner, his life, business and multiple wives including much about wife number 7! I even experienced the qi energy through my fingertips standing between the vases in the central courtyard.Dear Eddie W, We are so glad you enjoyed the tour and found the details of the mansion fascinating. We hope you had time to stay for a drink at the bar or a meal at Indigo too. Some great photo opportunities throughout the mansion & some amazing ones on the outside. 25 Ringgit per person to enter. Scan the QR code & download the app for the most informative & interesting story, via audio commentary at your own pace. Best to bring your own ear buds. There is a cafe & gift shop on site.Dear RKHOOKER, We are glad you enjoyed learning about the mansion and its highlights with our tour guide. The blue house, as it is nicknamed or Cheong Fatt Tze, named after its owner, is located in the heart of the city center, a stone's throw from the palace Eastern and Oriental hotel.
You should know that this residence serves as a hotel and restaurant, so only a few rooms are accessible, namely the entrance hall, the interior courtyard, the interior balcony and a room where there is an exhibition linked to the owner of the place.
A photo exhibition of the few films that were shot in this villa is on the first floor. Indochine, with Catherine Deneuve, was filmed there, in part. A few windows, a little dusty, display objects linked to the place.
The visit is paid and can be done independently or via a guide. The price is ridiculous. You must reserve a slot in advance even if it is possible to buy tickets on site. Not sure if you will be able to buy same-day tickets in high season since their number is limited.
Once you have purchased your tickets, you have to go through the control at the south entrance, even if it is not really very clear when you arrive at the blue house.
Despite the fact that we only visit a very small part, it is clear that the place is worth it, if only to contemplate the magnificent restructuring of the place knowing that in 1990 the place n It didn't look the same at all...
A place that leaves you a little hungry but which nevertheless deserves a quick visit if you are in the area and have the time. 45 minutes is enough.

You can make an online reservation at least one week in advance to access this attraction, but only guided tours can be booked online, one at 11am and one at 3.30pm. At other times the entrance is free and it works like this: at 30 minutes each hour he opens the cashier and sells 35 tickets to enter immediately and then closes. It reopens at 30 minutes the next hour. I understand the building is fragile and can't stand larger numbers. What is regrettable is that if you get to 45 minutes, when the register is already closed, you have to wait three quarters of an hour in the scorching sun or in the pouring rain the next opening. It would be more functional:
1) leave the cash desk open at all times and sell tickets with admission time, so that you can enter at 1pm by buying the ticket at 11am and so on;
or
2) give the possibility to buy all tickets online, even those without the guided tour; among other things, it is not clear why guided tours should be only two per day and not one every hour.
Given the complicated and exhausting mechanism of access to the ticket I limited myself to looking at the house from the outside; not to be the fox and the grapes, but basically it is just a house...

The entrance fee is currently 25 ringit and you get to see almost nothing for that, as most of the building is used as a hotel and access to it is closed. We went into the building without a guided tour, but as others have written, you can't go into other rooms with the tour either.
The Pinang Peranakan Mansion is much more recommendable, as it has more to offer for the same price.

I must mention that Selva was a very helpful staff that assisted us in taking pictures from various angles at the Courtyard which really made up for the shortcomings of the visit.
I have mixed feelings about the visit as the self guided tour was the same price as guided fyi (so you are better off booking the guided tour). The website did indicate that some parts of the mansion is beyond public visit (excld. in-house guest and visitors on tours) so not sure if this was an issue with the self guided tour. However, the visit of the mansion itself was a slight letdown as there weren't that many artefacts or areas to visit. The place gained much fame from a renowned movie and I was definitely expecting more from the tour.

Whether it is for guided or self-guided tours, there are limits per group. While the 24 (it says 20 on the web site) per group for self-guided tours was clearly indicated on the information banner, there was none indicated for self-guided tours. We first learnt about the limit of 15 (it says 10 on the web site as I just found out) from the security guard.
To try to join a self-guided tour, you have to join a queue, regardless of whether you have bought tickets on line or not. The queue is out in the open under the hot sun. For those who are unaware of the group limit, they could endure a fruitless wait only to be told that they have to continue waiting for the next entry time. No one from the mansion bothers to tell people that the group limit has been exceeded.
It is understandable that footfall has to be limited to preserve the place. But surely preserving the well being of visitors is also important.
A better queuing system, and better queuing conditions (some shade will be good) are badly needed.
Until improvements are made, it is better NOT even try to visit the mansion, unless you are prepared to bake under the hot sun and risk your health (heat stroke, sun burn, etc) for at least another hour.

There is not much to see in this house. They have blocked off most of the house for their restaurants and hotel. You can be done with the visit in less than 10 minutes even though they say it can take up to 45 minutes. Honestly the entrance fee is way too much for what you get to see compared to other locations in George Town.

Dear anoism,
We are sorry to hear that the tour was regrettably not enjoyable for you. While many guests love the information and anecdotes shared by our guides, we understand that others do prefer to experience the mansion at their leisure – though this is of course limited as we try and preserve the privacy of our hotel guests.

The hotel needs some renovation. And then being yelled at by the guard upon our arrival, I find that average. I can understand that there may be an excess of people who want to visit the place. There are efforts to make on a personal level and paint to put on the walls

Two English language tours are carried out daily at 11 and 14 o'clock for 25 rm. The Blue Mansion and information about it are also well visible from the street if you are in a hurry. As it is primarily a hotel viewing the interior is limited. This was the first renovated Chinese building around the time Georgetown was granted the Unesco World Heritage title.

Firstly, not allowed to park at site despite buying 9 tickets to visit.
Secondly, security tried to stop family with young children into the mansion as we were 20mins early n insisted them to wait outside under hot sun till our ticket time... not compassionate at all!
Thirdly, in less than 15mins, completed reading n seeing all displays. The End😵💫
To make the experience worst, the hotel reception at the front desk, showing upset faces to all mansion visitors...extreme irritated mood n kids was rudely told off when laughter was heard....aren't we on holiday???

Dear angelynnp2019,
Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We deeply regret that your visit to Cheong Fatt Tze – The Blue Mansion did not meet your expectations and sincerely apologize for the inconveniences you encountered.
Regarding parking, we understand your frustration. While our parking slots are limited and prioritized for hotel guests, we always strive to accommodate families or larger groups where possible, and we are sorry if this was not communicated effectively during your visit.
As for the wait before your tour, we regret that your family had to endure the heat. Our intention was not to cause discomfort, but to respect the scheduled tour timings. That said, we will work on improving our procedures to ensure guests, especially those with young children, have a more comfortable waiting experience.
We also understand that our tour may not resonate with everyone. Our goal is to provide an insightful and immersive experience, but we will take your feedback to improve our displays and ensure they are engaging for all our visitors.
Lastly, we deeply apologize for the negative interaction at the reception and for any misunderstanding regarding noise levels. While we strive to balance creating a serene environment for all guests, your family’s enjoyment is equally important to us. We will address this with our team to ensure a more welcoming and compassionate approach in the future.
We truly value your feedback as it helps us grow and improve. Should you decide to visit us again, we’d be grateful for the opportunity to provide you with a more enjoyable experience.

Visiting The Cheong Fatt Tze - The Blue Mansion has always been on my top travel bucket list when visiting Penang. So decided to go for the 11am English tour yesterday (14th March) and found that the tour guide of the mansion very informative as she was able to provide a lot of detail about the movie and want when into the planning when building the mansion. I was not disappointed by the tour because of this.
You’ll definitely be able to learn about the history of the mansion as well as some movie trivia/ behind the scene facts about the recent movie Crazy Rich Asians that was shot in this mansion.
The price of the hour long tour of the tour is RM25 is well worth the price as you’ll be able to revisit the historical content of the building itself. It is recommended to get the ticket 15mins before each of the tour stars and the main entrance of the mansion or purchase the ticket online. Also it is recommended to go for the first tour of the day which is at 11am.

We have a day in a Georgetown as part of a cruise. Can you arrive and do the 1 hour tour that day? Or do you have to book in advance?
Written March 11, 2020
Would be a good idea to book in advance since it would avoid waiting in line. You won't be disappointed since it is well worth a visit with an excellent guide. Or, as another person has said, you could always wander in for lunch or a drink at the bar without paying for the tour.

Is it possible to just pop in to the Hotel, without a guided tour, take some pics?

Hi there,
Besides our tour, we do welcome guests who are patronising our bar or our restaurant, Indigo. Our bar is open daily from 12 noon, and Indigo is open for lunch and dinner. Reservations can be made via our website.
We highly value the privacy of guests staying within our boutique hotel, thus there are areas restricted to guests who are on not staying with us.
Due to the high number of visitors who visit every day, our security does have to be cautious about entry in order to protect/preserve the heritage mansion, and the privacy of our hotel guests.
