    Friendly guide to Islam
This is Penang's first and still major mosque. Right at downtown George Town, it is a encompassing building. There is free guided tour for visitors and guides are warm and welcoming. The ten-minute tour is informative about the five daily prayers and how it is performed. How the mosque greets tourists is the perfect illustration of inclusiveness.

    Beautiful mosque worth a visit
We stopped at this mosque and were offered a free guided tour by a lovely member of staff who worked/volunteered there. The tour lasted approx 15 minutes and was very insightful. They provide appropriate attire for tourists to wear during the visit. The mosque was beautiful and I learnt alot. I highly recommend visiting if you are in the area.

    Not really worth actually visiting
Visiting times are confusing. There was a sign posted with them but when I arrived I was told it was prayer time and I should come back later. After coming back later I found two groups getting the tour so I looked around for a bit. There is not much you can see of the inside that you can't see from the outside so unlike a Turkish mosque I would say it wasn't as interesting or inviting to a non Muslim.

    A must!
A must. Beautiful and serene. They open between certain times. A few hours and then a gap. I went around 11:00. This is a good time as it is outside of prayer time. Friday, it is likely to be only open after Friday prayers. If you go on a Friday, then go in the afternoon. Very clean and well looked after. Staff are very helpful and friendly. Non-Muslims are welcome too. They will give you a throw to cover yourself if you are not appropriately dressed. They will also give you information about the mosque. Take your footwear off before going in. I was allowed in the main prayer hall part as I am Muslim. Best first to view from afar across the street and then go inside. This is the first and oldest mosque in Penang.

Beautiful building but not very welcoming.
The building itself is truly beautiful and, on a hot day, very cool inside. Unfortunately, there were strict limits on where non Muslims could go so much of the mosque went unseen. Whilst staff were friendly, they weren’t keen on us not joining a tour. Compared to the central mosque in Kuala Lumpur, overall this was a disappointment.

A visitor's centre is open in a separate building in the vast green garden. To enter the main building shoes must be left on the racks outside, locals even wash their feet in the covered water baisin on the courtyard. Toilets in mosques are usually free to use for anybody.

Kapitan Keling Masjid is one of the biggest mosques in George Town city, Penang. Built in 19th century by Indian Muslim traders in George Town. Great architectural design.

I offered my asr prayers there on a Friday. This a very clean, well organised and in the middle of a Chinese quarter, in the historic area of George Town. I liked the area where to perform wudu' before prayer - very water conscious. The inner and outer design is well worth the time of a non-Muslim as well.

A beautiful large mosque in the city center. Named after the Indian Muslim merchant "Captain Kling" (headman) Kauder Mohudin. The minaret especially stands out for its beauty. It is said to have been built in Hindu-Muslim style around 1800. To me, it looks very much like the Moorish style. But definitely worthy of admiration. Everything looks updated. In some places it even smells of paint. It was obviously recently renovated. There is an open green area nearby, probably the only one besides the Armenian Park in the center of the old city.

The Mosque itself is - sorry if this may sound impropriete - someway cool. It is build in a surprising clear style, mainly in white. So it is worth to skip your short trousers into a jeans or so. Ladies will do normally fine with a shwal around neck and head, but otherwise they provide something like a cape.
If you got the chance to participate on a short guided tour, do it ! We were guided by a wonderful lady from india (with a great vioce when reciting examples from the quran).

Not to far away, you will find Hock Teik Cheng Sin Temple - a nice contrast and also realy worth a visit
