Located on a hill near the Penang Botanical Garden, the temple was built in the mid-19th century, making it one of the oldest Hindu temples in George Town. It was last renovated in the 2000s, with visitors now having to climb over 500 steps to reach the temple. It also serves as the focal point of the annual Thaipusam celebrations.

We took the no10. bus from Komtar to this temple .It was a long journey and well worth it, when we finally reached there.
The temple is built on a hilltop , and so we have to climb around 500 steps to reach the top.
I had undergone knee replacement surgery and my husband had undergone a bypass. But both of us decided to go up and since we had no time restrictions, we slowly made it to the top and were well rewarded for the effort.
It was a hot day with the temperature very high.It was 11.30 in the afternoon, and so climbing was no joke.
But we somehow managed.
The temple is so beautiful, we forgot all our tiredness. This place is a tourist attraction during the Thai Poosam festival in January. So it was not very crowded in May and we had a great darshan of Lord Murugan.
The scenic beauty from the top of the the hill was breathtaking. We can see one side of Pinang with its coastline from the top. They have kept a few peacocks and peahens in an enclosure and we had a beautiful exhibtion of the peacock dancing in its full glory.
Climbing down the steps was more arduous than going up, but it was worth the effort.
When we came out of the place, no bus was in sight, and after a long wait, we were treated to some Malaysian hospitality!!!!
A car came along and stopped by and asked us if we needed a drop somewhere. It was as if our Guardian angels had come by.The lovely Malaysian Tamil couple dropped us right in the middle of the city close to the Dharmikarama Temple .
Three cheers for the lovely couple who saved us a long wait in the middle of nowhere!!!

A must visit temple if you are in Penang. The main deity is Lord Muruga. Various celebrations take place here such asThaipusam, Skantha Shashti and Thiru Karthigai festival. The temple is known as Tannir malai kovil among locals. Temple timings are 6am till 12.30noon or 4:15pm till 8:45pm. There is no mode of transportation up the hill such as winch or ropeway. Therefore everyone needs to climb up the 513 steps to have the Lord’s blessing. Not suitable for elderly person with mobility problems. Best time to visit the temple will be early morning or late evening in order to enjoy the cool breeze of the wind and have the panoramic view of Penang town. Remember you bring your mineral water to quench your thirst upon arrival up on the hill

"Every good journey begins with first step" - this inscription you will see at the beginning of the stairs. If you decide ... you won't regret that however get ready for a nice slow long climb :), you need to make lot of steps to reach this hill.
Only after this effort you will really appreciate this - it is effort but temple is avesome. Quite new looking, refreshed, I have seen lot of work going around. Exterior looks fantastic. The views from the hill are also fantastic.
Place not far away form Penang Botanical Garden, can be reached passing-by or by walk.
Assure you have something to drink, and bertter more than less :) othervise you will suffer.
older people should be really aware - way up looks easier than it really is. they could stay at the base and take a look on the statue and smaller shrine at the right side of the stairs.
Toilets and lavabos available at the top.

A wonderful place worth the climb of 500 odd steps. The steps were not steep and we did not feel the strain at all. The view from top was lovely...the inside of the temple was beautifully decorated and clean. Not to be missed if you visit Penang !!!

Temple is located on a hill. It’s definitely worth going up but we’ve seen more beautiful Hindu temples on Penang island.
If you want to go there by public transportation, take bus number 10 from Komtar. Tell the driver that you want to go to the Hindu temple close to the botanical garden. Costs 2 MYR per person. Enjoy!

If you are religious and a devotee the 500 over steps are not without reward. The temple is excellent and well maintained.

We walked from the Reclining Buddha Temple at Pulau Tikus and asked for directions to get there. It was a long walk but it is worth it. The temple is grand. Although some parts are under construction, it will not ruin the trip. The inside of the temple has intrinsic interior decorations. It is a temple at its finest. Definitely worth the 513+ steps.

how can older people climb in New Thannirmalai Thandayuthabani Temple Penang
Written April 29, 2017
Sir,
I am 67 years old. I climbed the temple very slowly. A step by step.
There is no cable cars to take you to the top. There is also no people to carry you up as it is in Ayyapa Swami temple. Just get some relatives and to hold you and just go up. If you have strong will power then the rest is up to Lord Muruga.
