- Dreamteam1 contributionDelicious cooking class in GeorgetownWe definitely enjoyed our private cooking class with Chef Samuel, the food was superb, we learned a lot about Penang cuisine and on how to improve our cooking skills and also about the different cultures in Malaysia. We had the chance to ask a lot of questions because of the personal setting which was a huge plus for us compared to the usual group cooking classes. The visit to the market to buy some ingredients was very interesting and a nice activity. On the down side, unfortunately we were missing a friendlier atmosphere during the whole experience. At the market we felt a bit left alone and had to hurry to keep up with him. We asked for a recommendation for breakfast at the market but were told it depended on us. We would have enjoyed knowing what options there are and what might be typical to have there. For us, he seemed a bit stressed and we felt rushed at times. During the class we felt that some comments or responses were rough and harsh which surprised us having read the other reviews. The booking process and also the tips on food and traveling in Malaysia were excellent, we appreciate all the recommendations and his wife, Jacqueline, was very heartwarming. Thanks for the overall wonderful experience!Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 24, 2024
- cameronbrown20242024Melbourne, Australia1 contributionAn amazing and unique experienceWe had an amazing experience with Samuel. From the private market tour to the breathtaking views of the city. Samuel shared his knowledge, experience and wisdom which was far beyond what we’ve experienced in other cooking classes. We weee able to cook our favourite local dishes and learn the techniques and tips behind them. Really appreciated the blend of theoretical and practical teaching that Samuel provided. This was a one of a kind experience. Thank youVisited May 2023Written April 27, 2024
- yarakohne1 contributionAmazing food and welcoming peopleWe absolutely loved this experience! Samuel and his wife Jacqueline welcomed us into their home and not only showed us new recipes, we also acquired a useful set of skills and learned a lot about their culture. Definitely something we will do again the next time we‘re in Penang. 10/10 recommend!Visited September 2023Written April 27, 2024
- brucetiewTokyo, Japan14 contributionsExcellent cooking experienceIt was an excellent experience for both my wife and I to attend Chef Samuel’s 4 meals cooking class. The best decision made during last visit to Penang. I learnt how to make the famous Penang Char Koay Teow (CKT), Penang White Curry Mee, Penang Assam Laksa and Ayam Capitan. For the first time, I was able to cook CKT at home with regular wok to get the “Wok Hei” and umami taste following Samuel’s method and his black sauce. Being able to cook my most favorite Penang hawker at home anytime is truly awesome. Chef Samuel explained the theory of application of various core ingredients of Malaysian style curry. How to make curry look appetizing and delicious. Thanks to chef Samuel, now I am able to cook CKT in oversea. Attending Samuel class was one of the highlights during my 8 days trip to Georgetown, Penang. I highly recommend Samuel for those who are interested to make authentic Penang Street food at home.Visited November 2023Written April 27, 2024
- Colleen CBuena Park, California7 contributionsLots of funMy adult son and I spent the morning with Chef Samuel. We picked up groceries at the wet market (which was fascinating and very clean), and he treated us to a few samples of hawker food. Then we headed over to his pro kitchen and he taught us to prepare the dishes we had pre-selected from a long list he had provided prior to my trip. Chef Samuel was very knowledgeable and a great and patient teacher..I highly recommend this activity.Visited December 2023Written April 27, 2024
- Jamal Alexander K20 contributionsEducational experienceWe enjoyed the educational and cultural elements to the culinary experience we had with Chef Samuel. I appreciated it when Chef Samuel took us to his favorite vendors at the local markets to purchase ingredients for the meals to be prepared. The "classroom" is in an apartment, and is a large, well-equipped kitchen with stations for each of us to work/learn in. It was a unique experience and I would like to repeat it in the future.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten April 27, 2024

We were on a cruise ship and Chef Samuel met us at the port and immediately took us to a local food market where we helped shop for the meal irtems. His apartment/cooking kitchen was awesome, high up in an apartment tower that overlooks the city. The food was great and the "hands on " part of our doing it ourselves was a big highlight. We very much enjoy locust cooking classes when we cruise. We've done many different ones, including Thai, Indonesian, and Mexican,. This Malaysian Cooking class with Chef Samuel was pone of the best.Visited May 2023Written April 27, 2024
- stevew5714Mabinay, Philippines1 contributionEnlightening afternoonMy wife and I booked this as a treat during our recent visit to Penang and we were not disappointed. Chef Samuel is an excellent tutor and demonstrated some techniques, and explained how the ingredients interact, which will certainly improve our culinary skills. The photo's taken by his wife Jacqueline provide a lasting memory. We enjoyed the whole experience immensely and would certainly recommend him. We aim to return!Visited April 2024Written April 27, 2024

He is incredibly knowledgeable and made everything vegan on request. After the great trip to the market to get the ingredients, he first explained a bit of theory and history of Malaysian cuisine. Would highly recommend.Visited May 2023Written April 29, 2024

We did a private couple cooking class with Samuel. The half day is perfectly planned with a visit to the wet market to collect all the ingredients. Sam tested our taste buds and chilli tolerance by trying some Malaysian delicacies. It was great to hear the backstory of the market and how it operates. We then went to Sam’s house where we started cooking. We chose chicken rendang, roti canai and char kway teow. We learnt all the techniques and secrets. It was a great day and even today we’ve come home and regularly cook the rendang and char kway teow! You are able to take photos and videos to help replicate. Thanks again Samuel we had a great time!

Chef Samuel's cooking class was recommended to us and we are very glad that we decided to do the class. It was a great way to gain some knowledge of Malaysian cooking techniques and be guided by an expert. Plus there was the bonus of eating the dishes we had made!
Samuel picked us up at our hotel, took us to a local wet market to purchase our ingredients and then to his home for the class.
Prior to our class he had sent us some suggestions of things to do and see in Georgetown and local dishes to try.
Samuel's wife Jacqueline made the booking process very easy.
If you have time we would definitely recommend doing a class.

Meeting Samuel and his family was a wonderful experience for us. We arrived over 30 minutes late due to a traffic jam and Samuel was very understanding. The market tour was very exciting and he even ordered us a dish to try as well as drinks. The cooking course itself was extremely informative and was characterised by a deep knowledge and understanding of culinary, cooking and fine food. We were really taken on a journey, learned a lot and the dishes were super tasty. Many thanks for this wonderful experience to Samuel and his very friendly family. We would love to come back and can highly recommend it.

It was a marvelous experience for us.
We learnt everything from scratch (included the noodle for our pan mee dish!) from the best chef! Samuel showed us around the local market, and guided us step by step through all the cooking process patiently at his studio.
Do consider this to spend your time while visiting Penang, and you'll be satisfied with the authentic malaysian culinary journey!
Thank you, Chef Samuel. We hope to experience it again some time in the future. All the best for you!

Chef Samuel was so helpful, even telling me what wok to buy and where. Loved going to the local markets and getting tips on how to cook each meal.
We had our 2 children 9 and 11yo who also did the cooking class and we all loved the experience. They could follow along and when they got stuck Samuel was really helpful and great at explaining what to do.
Loved that we could choose our own 3 dishes from an extensive menu. Would highly recommend booking this class as part of your trip to Penang!
