I visited the Taman Negara National Park as part of a tour package just because I felt that was the most effective way to get the most out of the trip. My package included two nights at a chalet, a night jungle hike, a day jungle hike, a boat ride at night, the canopy, a visit to an authentic villages, a visit to Deerland and Elephant Sanctuary, finally a boat ride back to civilization and a van for the final leg back to KL.
The only thing I found disappointing was the night hike as there wasn’t much to see and then it rained, like the heavens opened up. That’s not the parks fault of course, it just meant that the ground became too dangerous or just that the guides insurance didn’t tourists getting lost in the dark. The night time boat ride was super as we got to see fireflies. I kind of regret doing that now because I’ve only just read about the environmental impact of disturbing those insects. Talking of insects, I also got stung by a hornet in the chalet on the second night, so it didn’t spoil my enjoyment.
The boat ride back was super cool, really chilled out lying back, enjoying the sun and the river.
Would love to visit the park again.

Taman Negara was a mixed experience but worth visiting overall. It is surprisingly difficult to get to however so we ended up using the shuttle with NKS. We stayed in Kuala Tahan which is a small, quiet village. There are a couple of nice restaurants overlooking the river. To get to the rainforest you have to cross the river which was quite fun. The rainforest itself is spectacular. I really liked the fact that you could do many walks without a guide as there were clearly marked paths. There are several tour companies all selling exactly the same tours of which there was a small selection. I really enjoyed the orang Asli tribe visit but wasn’t convinced about the rapid shooting. The canopy walk is closed every Friday for maintenance but frustratingly, they closed again after 30 minutes light rain in the early afternoon. They advised that rain means automatic closure but they all went home and didn’t reopen again despite bright sunshine for the rest of the day. It seemed like they just needed an excuse and this was very disappointing. I think it’s an interesting place and unless you’re planning extended jungle treks 2 days is enough.

We went for a trip to see the Taman Negara national park in the jungle. Our driver MJ did a perfect job. While the 3 hours drive into the jungle, we had a nice chat with him with a lot of laughing. MJ was very friendly, amenable & courteous.
On the ride back home there was a giant traffic jam, so the drive back took us 6 hours instead of 3. Even though we were on the road for so long, we had a nice time inside the car with MJ. It was also his birthday and he had to work, but he wasn't mad or hectic at all. We were chatting nicely and laughed a lot, making the best of the situation. When we arrived in Kuala Lumpur, we saw the Petronas Twin Towers, shining bright and pretty and we adored them. Even though it was his birthday and we were on the road for so long (and his family had to have dinner without him), he offered us to go there in order to take some nice pictures, before heading to the hotel. After that, he even drove us to another very nice building (which I don't know the name of) to take some pictures. After that, he drove us to the Hotel. It was a very pleasant ride & we had a good time with MJ. We can recommend him to everyone who wants to make a tour in or around the city of Kuala Lumpur.

I was a little apprehensive about coming here, was the transport company (Han) legit, tales of leeches, would we get vertigo on the canopy walkway, how nice would our room as the TN Forest View Lodge be. All was good, see other reviews for more info.
We got Han Travels bus here from KL, arriving at Kuala Tembelling to catch the 2.5 boat ride to Kuala Tehan. WOW, what a great start to our Taman Negara experience.
Today we did the canopy walkway as it's closed tomorrow (Friday), arriving at 10am at the reception. Take your passports unless you remember the numbers.
Entry 1RM each, camera/smartphone 5RM each, canopy walkway 5RM each. So 27RM all in for us.
The walk to the canopy was good, generally boarded with steps here and there. Keep your eyes peeled and you may see insects, snakes and lizards. We saw NO LEECHES. But seeing all the flora and fauna did it for me, huge trees, bamboo as big as my house and the skyscraper canopy above.
Some parts of the walkway have been destroyed by taken trees so diversions are in place.
Once at the canopy walkway you get the chance to buy water (3RM for 1000ml)

We actually went in July 2020 and not 2021. Covid travel restrictions were briefly lifted so we took the chance. After a few months of lockdown some small restaurants disappeared, wildlife came to life!
Agree with other reviewers. The place is worth a visit, the entry price is very small ( 4rm) considering the cost to maintain. There are a few trails, one or two are without wooden planks which we ended up on by mistake. My kids were freaked out by the bloodsucking leeches and gianormous ants hahaha. Kids these days think the jungle should have walking paths that are tiled, no mosquitoes and very little to no scary insects ...actually adults think that too hahaha.
Do the river cruises, trekking, camp out if you have a tent, take lots of pictures or videos and enjoy the privilege that nature gives us now that our kids may not have have in the future.

Taman Negara is to Malaysia what the Amazon is to Brazil; a national treasure.
Being located in the center of Peninsular Malaysia, it is best to rent a car or take the services of a taxi (from surrounding towns) but it is possible to get there by bus.
On site, you already have to cross the river by boat for 1 RM per trip/person. Then you have to go to reception where you need to pay for a permit to be able to enjoy the forest as well as to be able to use your cameras and other cameras.
Many activities are available on site, we did the night visit with a guide for RM35/person allowing us to discover the flora and especially the fauna at night (different spiders, snakes, stick insects, monkeys in the distance, centipedes, insects of all kinds, etc.). There were a lot of people there and people weren't exactly quiet.
We also did the half-day by canoe to Lata Berkoh, a sort of natural swimming pool in the bed of the river (when the water is calm of course) with a stop at the famous Tualang tree and a stop to feed the fish, for RM250 for a maximum of 4 people per canoe. Early in the morning seems to be the best option for peace of mind.
We also did the hike towards the Bukit Terisek peak which was, ultimately, the most intense part of our visit to the park. The height difference is significant, the path is tiring and puts a strain on the body in conditions of intense heat and humidity! The path is certainly long, but if the weather is nice, you will be rewarded with a magnificent 360° view of the forest, the surrounding mountains and the landscape which is breathtaking.
It is also possible to go to the canopy walkway, aerial walkways to the canopy.
Points of interest are well marked, there are signs everywhere and several routes are possible. Most are furnished, wooden planks and stairs lead to different places. There are even observation towers to see the animals.
However, some of the stairs were in really bad shape, even completely destroyed. A little repair would be welcome.
We had a really nice day in this park and we were able to really enjoy the atmosphere of the place. By remaining silent, we were able to soak up all the surrounding noises and even see birds, hornbills and monkey families, insects, butterflies, etc. Taman Negara is a must-see in Malaysia.

We spent two days in Taman Negara Park. It is still a place untouched by great tourism, with a wide choice of Things to do in the countryside. We opted for the trek (7 hours) including crossing Canopy Walk, waterfall and meeting the natives. The temperature is about 30 degrees, the air is suffocating but the body is getting used to it. Small floating restaurants (or not) and simple guesthouses make this place a peaceful and authentic place.
Finally, we took a bus from Kuala Lumpur operated by Han Travel (about 4 hours), which is the cheapest option.

Honestly we were very excited to have the jungle experience, especially since this is advertised as one of the oldest forests in the world. Sadly it did not meet our expectations.
There are only three small trails accessible to individuals without a guide, the rest is closed off and it recently became forbidden to wander off on the other trails alone but they don't offer any guides to go on these paths. It's a very strange organization where it seems the park in itself is left without much maintenance, the trails are well thought with a raised path to avoid damage of the forest ground from tramping but some of it is in such a bad state that it can be dangerous. On the other hand Han Travels and other group operating tour companies are everywhere trying to sell their tours and their activities which are honestly not the best if you want an authentic experience seeing wildlife and delving deep into the forest. Everything is very controlled and it's impossible to book a guide or a boat trip somewhere to do something on your own, everything has to be booked through the tour companies and there's no way of doing much on your own. To top it off the food is not really good and can be expensive depending where you go.
All in all if you want to book tour trips i'd advise booking when you arrive rather than before hand as i've seen many bad reviews of these all in one package tours. And if you want to be free and experience the jungle on your own i recommend just booking 2 nights as 1 and a half day is entirely sufficient to walk the three available trails, have a guided night walk and do the canopy walk (the rest feels like tourist traps).
I hope this helps a few that were thinking of coming to taman negara and i truly hope this beautiful park can be better managed and the regulations around it changed so that it can rise to its true glory. It really has the potential to amaze and leave a lasting impression as it is gigantic and so filled with life but the way everything is managed spoils the experience which saddens me deeply. It needs to be reviewed and rethought according to what works in tourism especially now with the rapid growth of ecotourism, tours should be spreading awareness and teaching about the forest, etc. There's so much potential that is wasted! This model of tourism is sure to drive people away as well and the economy of the area won't get any better!!! It's of general interest to update the parks organization, create more trails and change the type of tours proposed. Make this park shine, make it a place where malay people come to and pride themselves with the heritage of their country!!
Thank you for reading me.
- A truly disappointed nature enthusiast and Malaysia lover

Village 100%tourist but very well organized. We spent 2.5 days there. On the first day, we visited the outskirts of taman negara, took the permits to visit the park 1euros /pers and 5euros / so and so camera, and toured the agencies. We had arrived via Nks by boat, it was a good experience, we met fishermen, buffaloes. The next day, we made the long trek with han , as much as the trek is nice, the Guide was speed and tended to make us run. The 5h walk was nice, picnic bof, swimming in the small waterfall also very nice , the return by boat very tourist, the Guide had fun watering us, visit the village without interest.
The next day, we went solo , we sank a little into the jungle beyond limits (we didn't know it ). 5h walk. In the jungle, we walk like turtles. In the evening, we did the night safari trek by walk with nks, we had a much nicer Guide who took his time, it was very pleasant, we could see lizards, scolopander, snakes , giant ants, termites,...
In short a nice experienceeven if it remains unauthentic

Traveled with NKS this summer with teenagers and it went very well.
>>
Too bad the pick up address
In Kuala (to go to Taman Negaran) is so poorly communicated…but on the other hand, the staff is very cordial and present by wattsapp, really adorable! Thank you to Yaaha for her kindness and patience.
>> For comfort, I also booked with them Taman Negaran towards Ile Perenthien Besar, apart from a wheel to change, arriving a good hour late.
>> You should know that Kuala Tahan is very poorly served, everyone is free to organize themselves with a local bus or a private taxi driver.
>> NKS is a good alternative for those who are not too demanding because it is the only one that can charter a ferry after…5 p.m.
>> I recommend NKS for those who like to prepare at least a small road stopover during their stay in Malaysia, then the bus companies are very correct. Reservation on site or online.
>>KL taxi drivers like Mr Zaid for Taman, Georges Town, Malacca, Perenthian Islands are amazing!.. But it remains a question of budget.
Up to you !

Visiting in April 20 Do you think rabies jab needed? Also visiting other areas on Malaysian peninsula. Driving there from Kuala Lumpur.
Written January 27, 2020
I got a rabies jab but probably not necessary if just visiting Taman Negara. We were going to bat caves etc so took the precaution.

Ciao Patrizia

Written July 11, 2018
It is possible but you would have to leave the car at the jetty and later at the jetty in Taman Negara. There are some parking facilities but they are not guarded.
