Shuk's class is interesting and fun. Our group prepared several curries, a stir fry and a satay. Later, we ate the dishes in the courtyard of Shuk's stunning Malaysian-style house. A great local experience - highly recommended.

Our large family group had a wonderful experience with Chef Shukri and Johnny.
Very organised with communicating via email and arranging transport. They share alot of stories of the local traditions and seeing their Malay home was a privilege. Being involved with the food prep was amazing and the flavors were delicious.
A very special experience that all members of the family enjoyed.

I've been thinking for a few days about how to write my review of Cook with Shuk. In part because I wanted to thoroughly consider what made the night so special, but also because my vocabulary of superlatives has suddenly been found to be inadequate and I needed to learn some new words with which to express my feelings about this experience.

We were met by Shuk's son and driven to what may be the most lovely house on the island. They live quite inland and it's a short journey over some single track roads to the house. Once there we met Shuk and his friend Johnny.

Johnny started off by getting us a drink (I had beer) and showing us the house - he's a really well travelled guy; originally from Germany, via France and a few more stops he finds himself on Langkawi where he understands the local culture and traditions well enough to explain island life, and how this shapes the design of the house. He then shows us the garden and all the herbs that they grow there.

Moving on to the kitchen - where the magic happens 😉 Shuk introduced us to all the ingredients that he's prepared and then step by step our party (there were 4 of us) made a course each. He teaches us how different ingredients work together, and supervises as our dishes come together.

Once cooked, we retire to the table while Shuk and his son plate up and bring us all our dinner. The food itself was amazing; the best meal we had on this holiday, and the company superb; Shuk and Johnny are fun company's do both very personable.... In the end, it felt just like I was having dinner with the family.

This is much more than a cooking class, and more than a really good meal. The whole night is just something so very special you need to take the opportunity to do it and treasure the memory afterwards.

That may be a great cooking class and experience, but we'll never know.
I emailed Shuk in December to check availability for today, Wednesday the 1st of March. I got an answer, I confirmed, everything seemed ok.
Then 2 weeks ago, I decided to make sure it was still good, as I just had one email answering questions, but nothing confirming reservation. In the last 2 weeks I sent 3 emails, and received zero answers. Disappointed, I gave up... and today, on the very day of the lesson, out of nowhere I get an email at 10am saying it's confirmed.
Obviously at that time we were already on the road visiting the island, and I didn't get internet access until 5:35pm, when the meeting point is in Pentai Tengah at 5:30pm.
Even more disappointing.
Such a pity, as bad communication during reservation (or none, in this case) can clearly spoil the whole experience. I lost too much time on this, I'll enjoy cooking classes in a bit more professional environment.

I went to Shuk cooking Malay class on friends recommendation. Here I was on the grounds of a stunning, traditional Malay wooden house. Monkeys were visiting the trees near by, looking curiously at me as I was coming near the house. Shuk took the little group, 5 of us, to his herb garden, picking curry leaks and other fresh aromatics. We all prepared the food and cooked under his instructions. We made amongst other, one of my favorite local dish, the rendang that we all shared around some wine and other dishes that we prepared that morning. Everything here is rather extraordinary and an interesting insight in the life of comfortable Malay house. Shuk is an overwhelming source of traditional food and medicinal food combination. His memory is full of incredible traditional cuisine that needs to be brought up and recorded. Go to see him and experience something exceptional for a morning of cooking and lunch. It's a quite unique experience

We attended this course in 2005. started with choosing the herbs from the garden. very instructive. then on into the kitchen on the way learning how his father had the house built in the traditional way (no nails) very interesting kitchen events with everyone doing their bit and we got to eat it afterwards ( beef rendang ) our favourite. in all a very good day. We intend to do it again in 2017

We had the pleasure of attending a cooking class run by Shuk and it was absolutely fantastic. We learnt about Malaysian cultural traditions, buildings, various herbs and spices, and of course how to cook some traditional Malaysian recipes. The warmth and friendliness we were shown was second to none. Would highly highly recommend to anyone coming to Langkawi. An absolute must.

This was the last night of our holiday and a very special way to round it off. We were picked up at Sugar restaurant by Shuk's son and taken to his lively traditionally built house up a narrow track. Johnny gave us the history of the house, took us on a tour of the herbs and spices growing in the garden and we had a chat about different customs over a glass of wine and some excellent satays. Shuk explained the different herbs, spices and roots used to flavour Malaysian food as well their health benefits. We took it in turns to help Shuk's prepare the meal, making beef rendang, chicken curry, fish parcels with chilli and ginger flower, stir fried vegetables with prawns and rice. The lovely thing was sitting down together with new friends and enjoying the food, setting and company. It turns out Shuk's and I were on the same rubber plantation at the same time over 40 years ago - small world. Thank you.

This experience was beyond my expectation! From the time we arrived at the house, we were amazed how beautiful it was. Chef Shuk is amazing! he told us about his house, some malay customs and heritage. He brought us around his garden of herbs and showed us around the house. Being a Malaysian, i haven't in my life seen such a beautiful traditional Malay house.
He ushered us to the kitchen where we had the cooking class. It was an excellent class where Chef Shuk got everyone involved in the cooking lesson. Good selection of Malaysian dishes chosen for the cooking class. And of course we were invited for dinner, the food taste awesome!
We even got a nice goody bag before we left. Thanks Chef Shuk!
