Every Wednesday and Saturday an interesting large food market opens up in Kuah next to the Golden Sands hotel. The majority of customers are locals enjoying the vast array of Malaysian dishes and a stroll with the family in the warm evening after sundown, so it isn't at all touristy. Even some of the vendors seem to be non professionals offering the best from their home menu and explaining willingly in English about the dishes and their ingredients. Fresh exotic fruit like durians, mangoes and lychees are also sold at reasonable prices. In daytime the low buildings next door are the place to shop in Kuah, tax free is widely advertised, but I bought cotton batiks, shopping bags featuring Van Gogh paintings and nice flip flops with rafflesia flowers

Happened to stay at a nearby hotel when we passed by the night market at around 5pm. All the vans were about to set up their stalls. So i checked with google and it said that sunday nights, the night market will happen here. So with an empty stomach we drove there, it was super near but we have an infant with us so we drove.. Thankfully the school opposite the night market was open for the night market patrons to park at a fee of Rm 2. Parking at the sides require skills which im not equiped with.
The night market or "Pasar malam" in Malay, was not as huge as others but it was enough to go through their local dishes. First in line was the appam balik filled with crushed peanuts, sugar and sweet corn. A popular food item there which we queued (a long queue) was the Nasi Kandar with ayam berempah. Many stalls selling Ayam percik ( marinated chicken barbecued and usually eaten with their sauce (peanut or sambal sauce). We also bought Nasi kukus with ayam berempah (steamed rice with spiced fried chicken) for the baby. Other stalls selling Yong taufu, nuggets/fishball on sticks. Overall, the Nasi kandar was worth it. And the wifey loves the food there.

Night market at Langkawi located at different place every night. Basically you can Google and you will know which night market is located at every different days. In fact in Langkawi, taking a Grab to night market is so convenient. There is so many great variety of food and many people will visit the night market. The price is reasonable and some consider super cheap. But for cleanliness wise not all will be able to accept it. In fact, I love going around the night market looking at different variety of food they sell but I don't consume the food at night market and I'm very selective on the food I purchased from night market esp I'm on Solo Trip. Is a nice experience

Try the local food, as there are many to choose from, and they are priced low and reasonably. Highly recommended but plan your stay carefully as the night market moves to different location daily. Otherwise, you can always taxi your way there!

I’ve visited the night market at Ayer Hangat on Friday night. It was amazing! Lots of fruit, meat and a variety of local dishes. Make sure you come hungry! Only thing you would have to sit on a porch or just work and eat your food ad there are no places to sit.

I think it's definitely a must do if you're a foody. We tried some really nice stuff. One great thing we tried was these strips of marinated and grilled lamb. I also tried apam which is a sweet a sweet and crispy crepe thing with sweet corn, butter, sugar and cinnamon inside. One of the downfalls was that a lot of the food was cooked and left to go cold and we were a little lost on what each dish was. This was one of my favourite activities on the island as everything else is kind of tacky and touristy.

This market opens in the evening and stays upto 11:00 pm. This market is a mobile/portable market. It opens in different places in the city within the week.
Monday - Jalan Makam Mahsuri Lama
Tuesday - Kedawang
Wednesday - Kuah
Thursday - Bohor Tempoyak
Friday - Padang Lalang
Saturday - Kuah
Sunday - Padang Matsirat
The largest one sits in Kuah.
Most of the stalls are food stalls. A very wide range of local foods are the main attraction of this market. Also some stalls sell shoes and garments. This is an interesting place to visit in Langkawi.

We reached Langkawi on a Tuesday and went to a night market the same evening. Though there were a few stalls selling T-shirts and trinkets, the market mostly consisted of stalls selling various types of local cuisine. There were peanuts, groundnuts and hazelnuts being steamed or roasted, a variety of seafood, and the famed durian fruit, among other types of fruit. If you want to smell and eat the local seafood, the night markets are a good option I think.

My boyfriend and I went to Kuah Night Market on a Thursday night and it was very interesting. Definitely a must go for all tourists and don't eat before you go and buy dinner at various market stalls (local food). The other parts of the markets (clothes, toys, bags etc) were really targeted at locals and not tourists as we found them fairly average and not too exciting.
We stayed at the Berjaya which was on the other side of the island so taxi cab took around 45 mins and the driver offered to wait for us when we went into the market. We declined and that was a mistake! There were nothing really interesting around the area (again, the town seems like it was targeted for local people, not so much tourists from western countries) and finding a cab was just too difficult. We ended up going to a hotel lobby (we forgot what the hotel was called) and the mos DELIGHTFUL concierge called us a cab and even though we weren't staying at their hotel he was absolutely helpful and super friendly. Wish I knew what the name of this hotel was!
In short, when you go visit Kuah it would be highly recommended to hire a cab or drive a hire car as there are not really much attractions and it was extremely quiet if you wanted to have a good, exciting night out!

We were in Pantai Chenang and went to the night market there, wouldn't bother it was generally the same stuff as any shop along the street and believe most stalls would have been run by those shops. You can get as good a bargains anytime by just shopping along the street.

Sun = Padang matsirat
Mon = Ulu melaka
Wed + Sat = Kuah
Tue = Kedawang
Thur = Temoyong in Cenang
Fri = Air hangat
Nights markets in Padang matsirat (Sun) and Kuah (Sat) are somewhat similar in terms of size. Since you are staying in Cenang, I would suggest you to go over the night market in Padang matsirat.
All night markets begin their operations around 5.30pm, where the crowd usually comes in around 6.15-7.45pm. You can avoid the peak period since it only takes around 40 mins to visit every stall.
After 9pm, most stalls will provide discount since they are going to close their stalls, and their foods could be not that good in quality.
By the way, they won't open their stalls during the raining evening as stated in the previous reply by Jim T.
