It was a great yoga retreat! We had it in Ambong-ambong and it was an amazing place surrounded by nature. Classes with Dorothy was great! She's the best yoga instructor i had so far, she's good in telling us the techniques and tips to achieve a difficult pose. She observed each of us and told us how our bodies should align to do a certain pose. She was very attentive. We had the classes at Ambong-ambong and it was such a relaxed experience to be surrounded by the sound of the nature (rather than in a yoga studio normally). Vegetarian meals and the mangrove boat tour included in the itinerary was all reputable, I enjoyed each of the meals and the tour. Anyone that visit Langkawi should spend some time with this retreat. Highly recommended!

we had private lessons with Ekraj from the Andaman hotel over two weeks stay. Ekraj was very patient, observant of our abilities and encouraging. The classes were on time, with good flow and combination of breathing, exercising and theory on life philosophy and way of living. It was highly inspirational with great results.
Highly recommended,
Mariana

We did the 5 day yoga retreat with Dorothy from Langkawi Yoga and stayed at Ambong Ambong. Dorothy had organised everything for the 5 days including dinners, a mangrove kayak tour with Wendy (wendynatureguide.com) and massages. We did a mix of private and group classes, all held on a beautiful platform at Ambong Ambong. Dorothy structured each session slightly differently, giving us experiences of asana, meditation, pranayama, reiki and relaxation. She tailored each private session to work on improving our technique and developing our knowledge and understanding of a variety of yoga postures. She was very patient and explained the anatomical basis of the practice clearly. We thoroughly enjoyed each session and highly recommend this as part of any Langkawi holiday.

I don't know what the retreat was that the other reviews reference because the retreat I attended was the biggest rip off. I booked into the Retreat in June 2010 after having a few lessons with Dorothy in November 2009. The retreat started badly with Dorothy being late for the welcome dinner and it just continued to get worse when we were told that the Itinerary 'was just a guide' and not fixed. The combination of there only being 3 people on the retreat plus the other yoga in Langkawi 'Yoga Now' were on holiday in India so Dorothy was doing their hotel classes meant that the Retreat wasn't a priority and our schedule was around all her other commitments. The majority of our classes were with her regular students who only paid 20 MYR so it was not a retreat at all. The standard of the yoga was really low as the other 2 people on the retreat had no prior yoga experience so I didn't even bother attending the last few classes and preferred to do the yoga dvd to do a session in my room at the hotel . The meals, massage and tour that she booked were from her friends because she got a discount and were a low standard. It was a very expensive mistake and whilst I have asked for a refund I have not yet received it. So if you are thinking of booking make sure you get a confirmed itinerary and not be disappointed after travelling 14 hours to get there.

I recently did a tour of Malaysia and was fortunate to have some extended time in Langkawi. Feeling a tad weary from travelling .. and not being a young chicken .. I investigated gentle exercise opportunities to get me back on track. I had experienced yoga a few years ago but found it too demanding and difficult but included it in my enquiries anyway. Well did I find the best medicine for my weary old bones or what ?? Dorothy Ang is the instructor for Langkawi Yoga and one of the most gentle, caring, professional and lively people I have ever met in the exercise/health arena. She was able to subtly motivate all the class participants .. who ranged in both age and experience ... without anyone feeling embarrassed or uncomfortable... in fact there were a few giggles sprinkled through the sessions which added to everyone's ease and ability to fit in. Dorothy made the classes both fun and rewarding. Each day I was due to attend I would have that little voice saying, 'Wouldn't it be nicer to just go to the beach or sit somewhere nice with a coffee' .. well no it isn't! After one of Dorothy's yoga classes which are both challenging and fun, you feel more inspired to get more out of the day. I now have a renewed interest in yoga and though I haven't found anyone in my travels since Dorothy who has been able to give me that complete experience, I will stick with it. .. or I might just need to keep heading back to Langkawi :) PS Fees were cheapest I've ever paid and that was with mat supplied. Do it !!

We did return to Langkawi in April 2012 to enjoy our stay at Bon Ton and even more the Yoga classes from Dorothy.
As we chose to stay most of our time on the resort, we asked Dorothy to come for our own private classes.
This turned out to be a fantastic idea and she took us to a superb Colonial house on Temple Tree area. Imagine the end of day, sunset light going through the open windows, yoga mat on a vintage wooden floor, birds singing around...heaven!
Added on top the great professional advices from Dorothy and her relaxing voice, we totally forgot about our busy and stressful life abroad.
Both my wife and I would come back to Langkawi and enjoy more lessons and practice with Dorothy...she truly convinced us! Thank you Dorothy!

I live in Singapore and needed a weekend away on short notice. I found Langkawi Yoga and Ambong Ambong online. They were very responsive and helped me plan a yoga and spa-filled weekend. The first yoga class was on the beach on a covered patio (it was pouring rain). The class was great - shiv asana to the sound of waves and falling rain was heavenly. I then had three private yoga sessions with Dorothy - who is a terrific instructor. I learned so much! She challenged me, gave great adjustments and tailored the sessions to my needs. She was also very accommodating about making changes to my itinerary. I was very pleased with the weekend's activities,

Ambong is a lovely resort. The rooms are large and well-appointed. The staff is incredible - extremely friendly and catered to every need. They drove me into town/beach and picked me up whenever I wanted. Nizam is especially friendly and helpful. He recommended a restaurant for me when I wanted a change in the itinerary. I highly recommend lunch or dinner at Bon Ton (particularly if you like animals, as I do). It's a very unique resort/restaurant in a gorgeous setting, with traditional Malay architecture and beautiful decor. And it is connected to an animal sanctuary, so there are plenty of rescued dogs and cats around (which made me happy).

I had no idea what to expect when I arrived. Thanks to Dorothy and the great staff at Ambong, I had a unique, refreshing and very enjoyable weekend. I highly recommend Langkawi Yoga and Ambong Ambong.

Many years ago I followed a friend to try out yoga in Singapore - which turned me off totally - couldn't do any of the poses! But when I visited Langkawi - a very laid back place to do yoga, I decided to give it another go.

After reading TA's reviews, I chose to learn with Dorothy - and wherever I went to on the island, sometimes I would mention I was going to learn yoga with her, and the general response was she's very patient, you'll like her class. So when the day came to meet Dorothy, it was with much anticipation. True enough, she was patient, very down-to-earth, in short, the right person to introduce me to yoga.

And six lessons later in a mix of one-to-one, with one other person, and in a larger group of 10 or so people who live and work on the island and who meet regularly, she brought me through a variety of poses, breathing techniques, and meditation sessions.

In the large group, I was lost in some of the poses/breathing skills but in the follow-up class which was one-to-one I got a better grasp of them.

We did yoga in a hotel gym, in Temple Tree, and just outside the Lighthouse Restaurant fronting the beach; the last one has a nice sea view but the flies were annoyingly ticklish and always landed on me whenever I was trying to keep still or do a pose!

Now at home, I try to follow what she has taught me, e.g. start with the correct way to breathe (we should do this all the time, but bad habits are hard to break), then yoga and end with meditation. But when you hear the traffic outside your window instead of her familiar voice "belly to rise, chest to expand" it's a lot harder. Maybe it's time to arrange another trip back to Langkawi...

This was my second time to Langkawi and after some great Yoga discovery last year with Dorothy, i was excited to be part of it again.
I stayed at Bonton resort and Dorothy kindly offered me a ride to the spot where we had a one hour session. The location was quiet and on the beach, under the palm trees facing the sun rise. Dorothy teaches for all levels. Her patience and care made me have a fabulous time again. I repeated this experience 2 days after at the Bonton this time in another fabulous setting. I would definitely recommend Langkawi yoga and will be back on a few months.

If you are a yogie I highly recommend a yoga retreat or a class with Dorothy @ Ambong Ambong.... stunning location, Dorothy is the best yoga instructor I have practiced with.... I've been to yoga retreats & classes in Koh Samui & Phuket I was very disappointed.
