Lois helped make us the most amazing custom wedding invitations based on some Christmas cards we were inspired by in the gallery. Lois was fantastic at looping us in the right amount when we were making creative decisions. We asked for the cards in a ridiculously short window of time and couldn't believe the quality of the work done and that it was completed early! We are incredibly grateful to the La Caverna team and recommend it so highly as a place for creative people to enjoy.

We really enjoyed our lunchtime visit to La Caverna. After ordering our lunch we wandered around in the art gallery. The are many interesting carvings and paintings. Lunch was good but don't forget to finish up with an affogato! Delicious!

La Caverna is a wonderful spot for breakfasts, teas o rcoffees and of coure lunches. Although the menu is rather limited, the food is good and the service friendly and sufficient. Owner run so always personal attention.

Situated in the oldest house in Blantyre, this is a lovely shop with a great selection of wooden carvings, original paintings, locally produced beauty products, etc. I particularly loved the old maps of Malawi. There is ample parking and the garden area is magnificent.

I toured La Caverna Art Gallery on a Saturday morning. There's lots of art work by local artists on sale and for display. It is set in a historic building, Mandala House, which also serves as a base for the Society of Malawi, with a nice garden round it. It's a nice place to buy art, and learn a few things about the history of Blantyre, and by extension Malawi. The manager Godfrey Mpwanya was very helpful and entertained lots of queries from me (I am a history buff...). There is a café, Café Mandala, which sells a wide range of food though I only had a cup of coffee, and the prices weren't exorbitant. It operates until 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays (on weekdays, it closes at 4:30 p.m.) though I'm not sure whether these opening times apply to the café as well. A gem in Blantyre!

What I love about La Caverna is its social enterprise approach to business. La Caverna not only features work from LOCAL Malawian artisans, but they buy the art at fair value from the artists. Profits are then reinvested into the gallery and supporting local causes. If you hate being hounded by vendors then La Caverna is a peaceful place to take your time, select what you want, and know that the artist is being paid fairly for their work and mass profits aren’t going into a vendor’s pockets instead of to the artist. Did I mention the food and coffee? The garden is an awesome place to sit and enjoy tea break or lunch and read about the history of Blantyre. Definitely one of my favourite places in Blantyre.

This is a charming and peaceful oasis near the center of Blantyre. The compassionate owner has turned a piece of Malawian history into a library and gallery and garden and café. The gallery promotes local artists in many different crafts. One room gives an historical explanation of the house and grounds. The café serves up delicious food and has scrumptious options for vegetarians. The vegetable panini was fabulous and unlike any panini we had ever had, it was so loaded with veggies perfectly grilled in a tangy light sauce. One can sit under the trees in shade, or around the house on the patio. The planted grounds are quiet and cared for. Here, they compost, grow some of their own vegetables and recycle/repurpose plastic. This incredible owner is the inspiration for all of the good work, from supporting local artists to empowering women to installing solar power and ensuring environmentally friendly processes. She also takes time out to chat with and care for her guests. An unhurried visit here is a must. But, wi-fi is available if you need it.

Great place to find some local artwork and curios. My house is full of pieces from here. You will always find something nice to take back as a memento from your visit to Malawi.

This art gallery/souvenir shop has a large variety of offerings. There are the usual trinkets (although better quality) as well as paintings and other interesting items. Well worth a stop.
