It is a hidden gem of Byblos. Everyone knows and visits the archaeological site (and good that they do that) but this church definitely deserves to be visited as well. It is a well-preserved and well-maintained building, with entrance free of charge, situated close to the city centre.

A beautiful Romanesque church, it is dedicated to Saint John Mark, the patron saint of the town, who is said to have founded the first Christian community of Byblos.
The church itself was built in 1115 AD by the Crusaders, originally as the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist.

I have visited this church on several occasions and most memorably for my daughter's wedding.
It is magical in its ancient beauty..a place you have to visit in Byblos.
The stone walls and arches tell of a time long long ago..and give off an aura of romance and charm.

history in front of our eyes, a must visit church whenever you are in Byblos, its almost 1000 years so imagine the history

St. John-Marc cathedral has a special place in the heart of the people of Byblos. It stands witness to centuries of history, and to the town's joys and sadnesses. It's the meeting place of the town: the elderly chat (mostly about politics!!) before mass, the kids play and the young ones mingle and chill.
The roman style cathedral was first built around the 12th century by the crusaders.
It was converted into a 3 story stable during the ottoman's reign. Traces of the wooden structure are still visible in the massive columns.
Half of the cathedral was demolished by the English bombing in the mid 19th century then rebuilt. You can notice the difference between the pillars (size and shape)and walls.
The cathedral today is catholic and is open during the day for the parishioners as well as visitors. It holds daily services (morning and evening), concerts and different religious events.
Many people get married in this cathedral, especially during the summer. There's a wedding nearly every Saturday and Sunday. If you're visiting Byblos on the weekend, pass by the cathedral in the afternoon and watch the bride walk down the altar!!
The cathedral's courtyard has a view on the beach as well as a pedestrian access to the old port on one side and an access to the old souk and the fortress on the other. It is surrounded by a beautiful garden known for its olive trees.

My favorite part of Byblos. I was just attracted here, like a moth to a flame. There wasn't anyone around, but the door was opened. Because it was so desolate, you could enjoy this church. The architecture is really beautiful. This is most see place in town.

Outstanding church got its name from thr lévangélique Saint Jean Marc who base on the tradition is the first founder of the christianity in the Phénicie.
Its Roman style is well reflected in the outside and inside as well.

This crusader-era cathedral is absolutely beautiful and in tremendous shape. Quaint grounds surround it. Check out the Norman-style architecture outside and the amazing vaulted ceiling inside. And the price is perfect - free!

This historic cathedral is simple and austere. The simplicity gives the structure its power. The gardens surrounding the cathedral are peaceful and well manicured.

I'm sorry I don't know. When I visited there were no religious ceremonies going on. I just tried to find a website for it to discover times, but no luck. You could email the local police station. They should know! Just an idea.
