- BrakiWorldTravelerBelgrade, Serbia20,857 contributionsMuseum of folk instruments is located at the edge of Panfilov park in downtown Almaty. It's a nice wooden structure with a distinctive green roof, but ruined with ugly concrete Soviet edifices behind it. It seems small but interesting to visit, which we were not able as it's closed on Mondays when we were there.Visited October 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 27, 2024
- TAMAN1951Liberty Lake, Washington8,907 contributionsA number of instruments representing a number of periods with sections for local artisans and another for international instruments. The museum is well done and the structure itself is historically significant having housed Soviet officers during their period of control.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 14, 2024
- Craig M6 contributionsI'm a musician so I really enjoyed this but I think it would appeal to anyone. Displays a wide range of Kazakh folk instruments as well as instruments from around the world. Many are beautiful crafted. I really wanted to get a Dombra after seeing the exhibit, but the timing didn't work and I wasn't sure how to get it home. I ended up getting a Saz in Istanbul which is similar.Visited October 2024Traveled soloWritten October 21, 2024
- Reslysten54Vienna, Virginia2,728 contributionsAcross cultures, people have found ways to create music through the most peculiar and beautiful forms of instruments. This collection contains a broad spectrum of international instruments, while of course featuring local contributions. I was surprised to see so many bagpipes from different countries. Signage is sparce, so go with a guide if you can. But even without one, it's a visual feast.Visited April 2024Traveled with friendsWritten May 22, 2024

Domras, including famous performers, some modern winners of masters competitions, even a couple of domras from the burial grounds of some very shaggy century.
Not only Kazakh instruments, but also from all over the world - including India, Indonesia, Japan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Altai and Uyghur instruments. For the first time I saw what a Ukrainian bandura and a Belarusian zither looked like. I couldn’t even imagine that there are so many musical instruments, not just pianos
Oddly enough, there are almost no people

This museum was included in our guided tour of the city. It is housed in an interesting building and has well laid out displays. It has both Kazakh and international exhibits. We enjoyed our visit much more than we thought we would and was a pleasant introduction to traditional instruments of the area which we heard played later in our restaurant at dinner. Worth a visit.

The museum is located inside Panfilov Park, made from wood in a beautiful architectural design. Apple green color building, few rooms, entry fees is 1500 tenge, and then enjoy a soft music while watching many musical instruments mainly Oud with two strings only.

We stopped in at the Museum of Folks Music Instruments … Yihlasa in Almaty about a week ago and it was culturally awesome. Having been raised on a lot of Canadian folk music we have an appreciation for folk music worldwide. Although we have not had much exposure to the Kazakh folk music scene, the instruments are familiar, some more than others and the music and musicians are excellent. We have since put some of the Kazakh folk songs on our playlist during our drive around Kazakhstan. Make sure you find out ahead of time about the live performances as they are not to be missed.

This museum is located in the center of the city in the park. The collection of music instruments is unique as people loving local authentic music gathered it few decades. Sometimes, the administration hold concerts inside the museum and musicians play the instruments from the collection.

We enjoyed seeing interesting instruments. Many types of guitars and drums. 3-4 rooms, so not huge but a good 1-2 hours of things to see. The staff seemed nice. It is self guided but there were some guides there too in Russian. Good for kids above 4 years old. Most everything behind glass. They have some things from other Asian countries too.

The museum is located within the Panfilov Park it is a good place to learn local culture and their music instruments. They have some similarity with Mongols.

It is a proper museum filled with ancient traditional Kazakh instruments as well as instruments from around the world. Nice building, nice lighting and exhibition design. They play traditional music so you can hear the instruments' actial sounds. It is not big with 2 main halls but has audioguide. With it, you may spend some while listening all the info, if you are limited in terms of time, you can just have a quick walk around without it.
