Sendai - then and now
Jun 2019 • Solo
This is a small but interesting museum, largely focusing on the history of Sendai and how it came to be. A lot of the displays have English translations which is handy. You can also get an audio guide for free which goes into a little more depth.

It’s a 2km walk from the city to the museum or you can take the subway or Loople bus to get there.

Well presented Museum

We found Sendai a fascinating city with a very different character to the others we have visited in Japan. This museum gave many insights into the development of Sendai and the effect of the Date family on its unique character. The displays in the museum outlining the journey of local envoys to the Vatican were of particular interest given the very limited contact between Japan and the rest of the world for most of its history. English audio guides are including in the entry price and even though they only covered part of the exhibits on display it was enough to build up a picture of the city's past. The building is very modern and has what looks like a nice café and good toilet facilities.

Modern and interesting
May 2018 • Couples
We were approached by an English-speaking docent, who gave the two of us a personal tour of some of the highlights of this excellent museum.

We caught the subway and walked about 10-15 minutes through the campus of a conference center. After we were done, we realized that the path to Sendai Castle grounds was right there, so we hiked up there too.

History of Sendai and the Date Clan
Sep 2017 • Friends
Many more exhibits and much cheaper than the museum on top of the castle site. I used to volunteer here so I can promise there are are some very important historical artifacts in a great variety. However, most exhibits are are displayed the same way mostly: behind glass. There are a few English signs, but a free audio guides and English volunteer guides (just ask!) can help you with the details.

To Learn about the Sendai Region from Ancient Days to Present
Apr 2017 • Couples
After visiting the Miyagi Museum of Art, we took a short cab ride (about 3 minutes, JPY670 or about US$6) to Sendai City Museum. We could have reached there by walking for about 15 minutes to the south, but we were lazy.

This is a wonderful museum to learn the history of today’s Sendai City region from ancient days to present with a strong emphasis on the Daté family, especially on its main character Daté Masamune (1567 – 1636) who is considered the founder of the Sendai Fiefdom of the 17th century onward until the mid-19th century.

It also had a nice section about Hasekura Tsunenaga, a vassal of Daté Masamune, who led a Daté’s private mission to the Vatican in the early 17th century. The clan built their own Western style ocean-going ship for this mission.

The museum has a nice restaurant on its ground floor called “San-no-maru Restaurant.”

Lovely museum, with very gracious and helpful guides!

I accompanied my husband on a business trip to Sendai, and had the excellent fortune to visit this museum with a small group. We had an English-speaking guide, who explained some things to us. I had a great time learning a little more about Japanese history (particularly from their perspective), and enjoyed the beautiful artworks displayed at the museum. We also had fun playing dress up (I am not being specific here, as it would be a spoiler), and practicing calligraphy in the "hands-on" area. Careful about the use of cameras in special exhibit areas (even with flash off).

Terrific timeline history of Sendai
Aug 2016 • Friends
Great museum with the timeline history of Sendai. Almost all exhibits are in Japanese and English. Very informative and great exhibits. The admission price is very reasonable (400 yen) and well worth it.
