Peaceful. Great photo spot. Insects

The park has a lot to offer in terms of photography opportunities.

I was the only visitor for the whole time I was there which made it easy to take my time with my camera.

It seems that it wasn't visited in a while as walking along the footpath I walked into many spiderwebs.

wonderful traditional gardens
Oct 2020
A bit outside central Sendai but easy to get to by taxi/car, the paid (cheap) gardens are the main attraction. The pagoda is visible throughout, and the reflection in the pond is gorgeous. Would visit again.

Beautiful garden - a gem
Aug 2019
To get to the temple, get off at Kitayama station (a short ride from Sendai). Walk up the slope, keep to the left and follow the road for another 10 to 15 minutes. It's a downhill walk. You'll then see the main gate and stone steps leading to the temple.

The garden behind the temple is absolutely beautiful. As it's not on the top to-do list of Sendai, there are very few visitors. There is a pond to walk around, bridges, and a east-facing pagoda. If one wants a photo with the pagoda as backdrop, go in the morning.

On the way back, I suggest going another way to avoid the walk uphill. With your back to the main building, head to the right and you'll see a parking lot. Cut through Kitayama cemetery (just follow Google map) and you'll get back to the station in about 10-15 minutes with no hills to climb. I do not recommend getting to the temple this way as you'll miss the main gate and the approach to the temple.

Absolutely lovely gardens
Jun 2019 • Solo
Rinno-ji temple and the Japanese Garden is certainly a gem in Sendai. I took the train from Sendai station three stops to Kitayama station and then walked the last 15 minutes.

The temple is very tranquil and serene. For 300 yen you can go into the Japanese garden which is a must. The pagoda, whilst relatively new, is such a lovely monument, and complements the pond and gardens beautifully. I had the place to myself and it was a real treat and worth the small effort to get there.

Lovely lovely lovely

Sendai's most famous temple which is rarely crowded. The temple cost a few hundred yen to see the amazing garden and pagoda. Spring, autumn, and winter all offer a new view.

Wonderful authentic Japanese garden
Feb 2019 • Couples
We visited on a grey morning in February and we were the only visitors, apart from a crane who stood fishing in the lake for the whole time that we were there. It was beautiful and peaceful and although probably not as good as in the summer, it was a place of peace and reflection.
We thoroughly enjoyed it and for 300 yen was great value.
Look out for the donkeys near the entrance. Easy ten minute train journey from Sendai Station and then a 15 minute walk.

Lovely garden

Very lovely maintained garden. I particularly enjoyed the layers of snow. Thus, I recommend it during the winter season. The entrance is next to the bus stop.

One of the prettiest garden in Sendai
Aug 2018 • Family
Rinnoji (輪王寺, Rinnōji), lying to the north of Sendai's downtown, may first appear to be a somewhat unexceptional temple. However, beyond the main hall of the temple is a beautiful Japanese garden and pagoda that are well worth visiting.

The temple was founded in 1441 by Date Mochimune, a member of the Date clan that later controlled large parts of northern Japan in the Edo Period. Rinnoji is the family temple of the Date clan, and although it was not always located at its present spot in Sendai, it moved there together with the Date family in the early 1600s. All of the buildings have been recently restored to their original appearances.

Visitors enter Rinnoji's inner gardens via a paid, unmanned turn style, and once inside can walk along the various paths, admire the koi (carps), the three-storied pagoda and the well-tended trees, flowers and plants. There are also several benches for visitors to sit and relax as they take in the scenery.

Hidden Japanese Garden
Sep 2017 • Couples
I was not too impressed by this temple until I visited the Japanese garden. A small entree fee and walla...I walked into a different world. The garden is beautiful and distinctively Japanese. The view seems different as I walked around the pond.
This garden alone made the JR train trip from Sendai and the short walk via graves worthwhile.
