The day we drove it was unfortunately quite misty but occasionally we'd break out of the mist into photographic panoramas. There's an 800m long section where you can't stop your car due to the volcanic gases but the sight of the bizarre barely there vegetation in that section is something to behold. We went during autumn (late October) and got to see the full range of fall colours. There's a crater and lake and marshland trail at the top that unfortunately we had to pass on due to the weather but each looks like an easy short hike from the parking area.

Beautiful views! I was here at the beginning of summer when the snow was still melting and then later again. Both times it is equally beautiful and stunning.
The road is quite narrow at some spots and there are multiple blind corners where some people come around at the wrong side of the road. So I would afvise to take it slow and soak in the glorious scenery!

A long and winding route with little along the way except if you go to the Azuma volcano, but a beautiful drive in itself. Great views all around off to Fukushima city or Mount Bandai depending where you are, and often volcanic activity such as smoke.

They close the route during winter due to snow (you would die if you tried to drive it at that time anyway!) or if the volcanoes are acting up.

Very exciting driving course with Super Special Superb view. Near the quite high area, the view of wild landscape looks like a planet other than earth because of volcanic gas. The other lower areas also have great deep mountain views. We cannot drive this road during winter, so we have to go there from the middle of April to Mid November. From May to October we may go to the road during night if the road is not cold. We can spend starry night, we can also see many shooting stars when there is not the moon light.

No indication from any sources whatsoever on the closure of the road. It's hard for tourists who do not speak Japanese to be able to uncover such information. Disappointing experience overall.

If it had been a clear day, it would have been an amazing mountain road with a sea of clouds and a spectacular view, but on the day of the trip, the weather was rough due to a typhoon, so it wasn't very refreshing.
This is all down to luck.
However, with the ruggedness and steepness typical of mountain roads, it would have been great if it had been a clear day. I think😅
