Azuma-Kofuji " small-fuji", Its mountain is located near Fukushima city in Fukushima prefecture. This mountain "azumaKofuji" can be seen from Fukushima city with beautiful silhouetted against the evening sky.
On the way to this mountain, you can enjoy high mountain road and nice view.
Yes, you can go near the top of mountain by sight-seeing bus. On the top, you can walk around the small lake, climb hills and climb to the mountain top, from there you will experience unbelievable beauty of Lake Goshiki-numa."five colors lake"
After enjoy the mountain walk, you should stay at a" Onsen Ryokan" Japanese style hotel with a hot spring. You will enjoy Japanese-style dishes and hot spring there.
It will make you relax and have a sound sleep.
Please come and see.
I have been living near here, so I know how wonderful it is.

We stayed at Fukushima APA hotel which is just next to the JR station.
Took the bus from Fukushima bus terminal, bus stand 11 at 0950am. It was off peak season and there were only 2 timings on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. Can't remember the other timing that depart from the bus terminal. The journey took about 1.5 hours. Do note on the departure timings from Azuma Kofuji back to Fukushima JR station.
The bus route took us to the very beautiful and stunning skyline. We went here during early May where the skyline was just opened for vehicles. The further we went up, the thicker the snow and many parts of the skyline were still covered in snow. Very beautiful!!!
The view at the top of Azuma Kofuji was 100% worth the trip. It was very cooling and can be cold when it's windy. You can walk/trek around the crater in 45mins if you want to experience.
There's a Facebook update for Azuma Kofuji for carpark traffic, weather conditions etc. (Japanese language only)

If you want to get out of fukushima you can catch a but on weekends (only a few a day). Failing that you could rent a car. I hitch hiked but i can speak japanese and made my way to the preceding mountain road first. Make sure you choose a safe place to get picked up.

It takes about an hour to drive from Fukushima Station to Mt. Azuma-Kofuji. There is plenty to see along the Bandai-Azuma Skyline, and I recommend stopping at Attakayu Public Bath at Takayu Onsen on the way back. It only takes about an hour to hike around the crater. The path up is rock and uneven, but not too difficult. I made the climb with my 5 year old daughter. There are several other hikes around Jododaira.
When I went the Jododaira Rest House was closed, so make sure you have some snacks or food in the car.
The neighboring mountain Mt. Isasaikyo is an active volcano, so you can't climb Mt. Issaikyo now (July 2019).

We went to hike there now because they say that this is the peak season of the area in the autumn. We climbed up to the volcano and walked around the crater. The way up is a bit tiring, the steps are high and not even but the view worths the effort. Around the crater there's no sidewalk or anything so I suggest hiking shoes as the ground is rocky and slippery. But even children could do it so it's not that difficult.
From there, we walked away to see the lake Goshikinuma which took some hours but the weather was nice so it wasn't too bad.
We went by rental car. We are living in Fukushima and planned to go by bus, but there's only two buses per day and it's really inconvenient. going by the earlier bus and coming home with the latter one, we could have had only 4 hours there which isn't enough if you want to see anything else besides the crater.

Good short 10 minute walk up to the summit and around 30-40 mins to get around the crater, we walked up through the clouds to the sunshine!

A beautiful active volcano with excellent hiking, when I have been it is usually very windy so be prepared for that even during hot, still weather down the mountain.
Don't expect much else except the view and the climb up from the visitor's center. That's all there is in that area generally, though the drive along the Azumi-Bandai skyline is fun and a good experience in itself.

Climb up to the summit is step but worth it for the views. Unfortunately it was very cloudy when we walked up but the clouds quickly cleared and we were able to properly see the crater.
Need a good level of fitness
There is a nice restaurant in the car park.

If you travel to Jododaira from the south you can still get in to see the sunrise (sorry Trip Advisor doesn't let me post links). If you are coming from Ebisu Circuit you should be OK.
There is quite a bit to see in the area between Ebisu and Jododaira. I like Minka-en. They have a lot of traditional homes and building from hundreds of years ago. It's also very close to Azuma Baseball Stadium which will be a softball venue for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Do you like onsen/hot spring? Tsuchiyu Onsen is a nice area and it is famous for kokeshi dolls.
Or there is a small craft brewery 'Fukushima Michinoku Beer' at St. Anna's Garden.
There are English speaking staff at the Tourist Information Center at Fukushima Station if you can stop there.
