Kabushima in Hachinohe city is famous as a major breeding ground for black-tailed gulls. Originally an island, this place is now connected to the mainland, with a small hill in the center of the island, where Kabushima Shrine once stood.

The shrine enshrines Benzaiten, and has long been worshipped by locals as the guardian deity of prosperous business and safe fishing. As the "kabu" in Kabushima and the "kabu" in Kabushima are pronounced the same, the "kabuagari hyotan omamori" (turnip gourd amulet) is popular, as it is said to bring about an increase in stock prices and the "kabu" (potato in stock). There is also a statue of the "kabuagari hyotan" in front of the main hall.

Kabushima is about a 15-minute walk from Same Station. Kabushima Shrine is located on top of Kabushima, and is said to be a place of worship for its blessings of "kabuagari" (a blessing that brings popularity and wealth). When you get off at the bus stop at Kabushima Seaside Park, you will see a well-maintained approach to the shrine, and you can see Kabushima ahead and Kabushima Shrine above it. The entire Kabushima looks like a shrine. After walking about 100m, there are stone steps leading up to the shrine, which feel quite steep. When you reach the top, you will see the main shrine building in front of you, and a path that takes you around the shrine. Kabushima is a nationally designated natural monument, and although it is said to be a breeding ground for black-tailed gulls, unfortunately there were no black-tailed gulls there in mid-September. I wanted to see many black-tailed gulls flying around, but unfortunately it was a shame. The tourist guidebook said that black-tailed gulls fly in to the island to breed from March to August, and that this is the only place in Japan where you can observe them up close, with an estimated population of 30,000 to 40,000. If I have the opportunity, I would like to visit again during the season when the black-tailed gulls arrive.

Apparently this place is famous as a breeding ground for black-tailed gulls, but if you go in December there are no them. There is no damage from droppings so you can visit the shrine in peace, but... If you want to see black-tailed gulls, make sure you don't go at the wrong time.
The shrine has been beautifully rebuilt. There were a fair number of worshippers and it was quite lively.
Kabushima was originally an island, but is now connected to the mainland. I guess it's one of those land-tied islands we learned about in geography class a long time ago.

I went to Kabushima Shrine. It is famous as a breeding ground for black-tailed gulls. The first thing that surprised me when I visited was how beautiful the Pacific Ocean looked. There are many cliffs. I walked around the shrine three times while looking at these. It seems that doing this brings good fortune. I was surprised at how well-constructed the shrine was, even from the back. The main hall is really impressive, and the view is beautiful. It's definitely worth going.

There are currently (January 2019) construction works and it’s not possible to go up to the shrine. Very unfortunate.

Kabushima (it isn't actually an island as it is connected to the land is home to Hachinohe's famous black tailed sea gulls AKA umi neko. There is a shrine at the top with a small souvenir shop. The number of seagulls is an incredible sight and endearingly Japanese. Just remember to take an umbrella with you!

Great scenic bayside stopping place in Hachinohe for admiring and, especially, listening to, seagulls: they own this place! For that reason, and regardless of the weather, you may want to carry an umbrella with you. Just sayin'...

I went because I thought the shrine looked picturesque and it was a nice day. I actually didn't know about the seagulls and was pretty stunned by the sight. The pictures I've seen and taken don't quite do the level of intensity justice. The birds do periodically change positions.

It wasn't the time to talk about the sea cat, so I didn't see it.
I wanted to go.
I bought a souvenir from there.
Also, the sea was nearby and powerful,
The tsunami sign in the middle of the stairs was heartbreaking.
