Located on the NE side of the Hakkoda Mountain range, Hakkoda Onsen is easy to reach by car via Rt. 40 and Rt. 242. The reasonable day-use fee for the baths was ¥600. The bathhouse is a large wood building connected to the inn via an indoors/outdoors corridor. The gender-separated baths were wonderful! The handsome, steamy indoors space featured two large sulphur-rich baths situated beneath high-vaulted ceilings (25-30 feet) supported by massive wooden piers. The main bath was toasty warm (temperature felt like 41C), and the milky-white smaller bath was almost a little chilly (approx 35C). The spacious rotenburo (outdoors baths) were reached via a hard-to-spot door near the showers. They provided the same two water types/temperatures and afforded great views of the mountains. The warmer rotenburo was a perfect soak on a chilly mid-November day! As a day-trip bath experience, Hakkoda Onsen is my new #1 favorite over the four other near-by properties (Tsuta, Sukayu, Jugokura, and Yachi) that I have visited thus far. GPS: 40.696672, 140.90989
