We went in July and got lucky with the perfect weather. To me the highlight was the short hike at the top. Our route took us to a viewing deck facing a tranquil marsh with mountains in the background. Just beautiful.

I can't say much about it because the day I wen it was snowing very heavily that there is basically really low visibility. Only one of the ski slope remains open. However, I still find it fun because I get to see how the ropeway operators deal with the frost that form in the cable car. so even though I... More

The Hakkoda Ropeway is an enjoyable 1 hour bus trip from the Aomori train station. Buy your ticket at the Tourist Information Centre which is right next to the Aomori Train Station. Unfortunately, I didn't check the weather and my day was ruined because it was rainy and foggy all day. When I arrived at the Hokkoda Ropeway I didn't... More

There is snow and, then, there is Hakkoda. There is snow everywhere, it is deep, dry and powdery snow and it never seems to stop snowing. We were excited to take the ropeway up, but with no intention of skiing down after we realised that the visibility due to heavy snow fall was somewhat limited and that the slopes were... More

This was part of a shore excursion that we took. We also visited the Nebuta Festival Float Museum and the fish market. They really pack you into the gondola when it is ski season.

We were there on 26/4/2016 which was the end of winter but nevertheless, there was still lots of snow for skiers. Not crowded at this time, good time to visit if you want to ski. View is spectacular from the top!

A few thoughts from my experience. The two courses are okay, but forest route has lots of flat sections and some uphill at end. Typical Japanese ski run made longer but not better with flats. Not great for snowboarder. Direct route is fun, but at 1100 yen per ride you better have some good snow to make it worthwhile. Backcountry... More

Went snowboarding. The terrain is pretty much exclusives side/backcountry except for 2 demarcated paths with distance markers, and nothing is groomed. Snow was fluffy. Accessible from Aomori JR Station via bus and JR Rail passes cover the fare, what's not to like?

For skiers/boarders: the legends are true, there's too much pow. Don't come here unless you're at least advanced-intermediate. Maybe don't come at all and save that pow for me. Ropeway is expensive. Around 1100yen per ride, comes at 20 min intervals. Going off-piste/backcountry will need guide/equipment. For piste, there's two main runs for the ropeway, a 3.5km run and a... More

One of the must-dos around Hakkoda area but we were in the middle of a snowstorm. Could hardly see anything and it was truly feezing up there. And it is not cheap getting on the gondola. There was a group of Chinese tourists sharing the ride up and down. It was so cold that a few very brave ones ventured... More
