I joined workshop, where I coloured Japan blue on paper, at this museum. Prior to the workshop, I had a chance to join the puppet show, which last 30 min. The story at this threatre is mainly about Bando Jurobe, who was samui 400 years ago. He was accused and forced to do hara-kiri. He was a kind of scapegoat for Tokushima-domain. Tokushima-domain imported rice from other domains, but this broke Edo Bakufu's order. Jurobe was a domain officer, who administrate rice imports despite the fact that the Edo Bakufu banned any import from other domain. Jurobe was forced to kill himself before the act was exposed to the Edo Bakufu. Based on this tradgedy, one composer made puppet show.

In Tokushima, puppet shows are traditionally played in shrines. So figures of puppets in Tokushima are different from in other regions, according to explanation in the threatre.

Wow, these puppets were sensational. I enjoyed the walk around the museum to see and learn about this art form/entertainment. The performance was great to see how the puppets were operated and to get up close afterward with the puppeteers and have photos. A really great experience

I loved everything about this place. Get there about 30 minutes early and catch the guided museum tour; a docent shows how the puppets work. The museum exhibits are all in English as well as Japanese. The show itself was wonderful, the emotion comes through even though I don't understand Japanese. The story of the puppetry itself is the story of Tokushima's economic and environmental history. So excelllent!

Japan has developed a very specific art for puppet theater, very different from Europe and even from Vietnam. This museum offers a unique introduction to this art, showing all the different facets. We took a guided tour and the explanations were very informative. The scenario of the 30 min show is not the most compelling one though.

Not only is there a small museum with displays about puppets, but visitors are allowed to handle real puppets and learn how they work. Be sure to attend one of the performances in the theater. It is all done in Japanese, but there is plenty to look at between the live musicians, puppets, and puppeteers. Performers are volunteers, but the quality of the show is still surprisingly good. Because it is a smaller, educational facility, it is possible to ask questions and take photographs. I was also impressed because my 3-year-old boy was scared at the black masks, so during the intermission, the puppeteers were very considerate and took them off and carefully showed them to my son so he was no longer afraid.

Small museum, but opportunity to see Awa puppetry (30 minute act from classic play) and meet puppeteers is priceless. Take 7 bus from JR.
