Quaint & Convenient

How many cities even have streetcars any more? The Tosaden system is a very helpful thing for getting around Kochi City, and it can take you out as far as Nankoku/Gomen to the east, and to Ino in the west. If you have the Shikoku Rail Pass it is really nice, you just hop on and then show your pass before getting off.

If you are travelling a longer ride, say from Kochi City to Nangoku, be aware that not every car runs the full distance out of the big city and to the end of the line. In that case you'd look for a car that has the kanji for "Gomen" on it... the town, not the apology!

The regular trains from Kochi Station would be a more efficient way to get to Ino or Gomen, but I always enjoyed watching the locals (OK, the pretty girls) getting on and off at all the many streetcar stops.

Useful and interesting

We did not get to really understand the workings of the trams in our brief rides. Price is by distsnce, but the central area is 200 yen. Most people use IC cards, but my ICOCA did not work here.

Easy way to see tourist attractions.

Rail line goes north, south, east & west within Kochi City. With a 1 day pass you can hop off & on where you like, tickets can be purchased on board the train for 500 yen per adult. The ticket also entitles you to discounts & benefits at some of the tourist attractions along the train routes. Just get yourself a map and work out what you want to see, it is fairly easy to navigate the routes.

Another fantastic Japanese public transport
Mar 2018 • Couples
I am in awe of the Japanese public transport systems, they are all clean, efficient, cheap and on time - everything that the UK's transport systems are not! We have used the tram system in several Japanese towns, some are ultra modern and some, like this one in Kochi are rather old and rattly but still fantastic!

Tosaden Kotsu streetcars have 2 lines, crossing Kochi city. It is the most convenient way to access JR train station, Kochi Castle, shopping area and other attractions.

Cute street cars
Dec 2017 • Solo
The street cars are easy to ride. There are only 2 routes. I rode the wrong direction several times. You can buy one day pass which will cover all your riding throughout the day. It is also easy to walk instead of waiting for the street car.

Nostalgic Transport
Aug 2017 • Family
Trams in Kochi are frequent and the service is extremely good. Drivers are generally very helpful. You can transfer to another tram for the same price but need to take a ticket after paying on the first tram and then give it to the driver of the second tram when disembarking.

Nice way to get around town
Mar 2017 • Friends
Get a one-day pass should you want to move around town using this transportation system. The pass will save money, time and mental work as the transportation system works on a fare zone scheme. Cars run frequently during the daytime, less frequently so as the night comes. The cars basically runs on a East-West track with the center connecting with a spur going north to Kochi JR station. It's a fun way to rub elbows with the locals too.

Excellent way to get around Kochi
Feb 2017 • Solo
The trams are small but they run very frequently, so it's very convenient. If you have the time, it's fun to just go where the tram goes and get off at the end and see what most people seldom see on a trip. The fare system is puzzling, but the locals seem used to helping visitors out, so even for a short ride, don't be put off by not knowing the system. If you plan to ride a lot, buy a day pass at the tourist center.
